- Kapitel 5 -

Then afterwarde Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may celebrate a feast vnto me in the wildernesse.

And Pharaoh saide, Who is the Lord, that I should heare his voyce, and let Israel go? I knowe not the Lord, neither will I let Israel goe.

And they saide, We worship the God of the Ebrewes: we pray thee, let vs goe three daies iourney in the desert, and sacrifice vnto the Lord our God, least he bring vpon vs the pestilence or sword.

Then saide the King of Egypt vnto them, Moses and Aaron, why cause ye the people to cease from their workes? get you to your burdens.

Pharaoh saide furthermore, Behold, much people is nowe in the lande, and ye make them leaue their burdens.

Bricks and Straw

Therefore Pharaoh gaue commandement the same day vnto the taskemasters of the people, and to their officers, saying,

Ye shall giue the people no more strawe, to make bricke ( as in time past) but let them goe and gather them strawe them selues:

Notwithstanding lay vpon them the nober of bricke, which they made in time past, diminish nothing thereof: for they be idle, therefore they crie, saying, Let vs go to offer sacrifice vnto our God.

Lay more worke vpon the men, and cause them to do it, and let the not regard vaine words.

Then went the taskemasters of the people and their officers out, and tolde the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will giue you no more strawe.

Goe your selues, get you strawe where yee can finde it, yet shall nothing of your labour bee diminished.

Then were the people scattered abroade throughout all the land of Egypt, for to gather stubble in steade of strawe.

And the taskemasters hasted them, saying, Finish your dayes worke euery dayes taske, as ye did when ye had strawe.

And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaohs taskemasters had set ouer them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore haue ye not fulfilled your taske in making bricke yesterday and to daye, as in times past?

The Cry of the Israelites

Then the officers of the children of Israel came, and cryed vnto Pharaoh, saying, Wherfore dealest thou thus with thy seruants?

There is no strawe giuen to thy seruantes, and they say vnto vs, Make bricke: and loe, thy seruants are beaten, and thy people is blamed.

But he said, Ye are to much idle: therfore ye say, Let vs goe to offer sacrifice to the Lord.

Goe therefore nowe and worke: for there shall no strawe be giuen you, yet shall yee deliuer the whole tale of bricke.

Then the officers of the children of Israel sawe them selues in an euill case, because it was saide, Ye shall diminish nothing of your bricke, nor of euery dayes taske.

And they met Moses and Aaron, which stood in their way as they came out from Pharaoh,

To whom they said, The Lord looke vpon you and iudge: for yee haue made our sauour to stinke before Pharaoh and before his seruants, in that ye haue put a sword in their hand to slay vs.

Wherefore Moses returned to the Lord, and saide, Lord, why hast thou afflicted this people? wherefore hast thou thus sent me?

For since I came to Pharaoh to speake in thy Name, he hath vexed this people, and yet thou hast not deliuered thy people.

Erste Begegnung mit dem Pharao

Darnach gingen Moses und Aaron hin und sprachen zu Pharao: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Lass mein Volk ziehen, damit es mir in der Wüste Opfer darbringe.

Er aber antwortete: Wer ist der Herr, dass ich auf seine Stimme hören und Israel ziehen lassen sollte? Ich kenne den Herrn nicht und werde Israel auch nicht ziehen lassen!

Da sprachen jene: Der Gott der Hebräer hat uns gerufen, dass wir drei Tagereisen weit in die Wüste ziehen, und dem Herrn, unserm Gott, Opfer darbringen, damit nicht Pest oder Tod durch das Schwert über uns komme.

Da sprach der König von Ägypten zu ihnen: Warum, Moses und Aaron, ziehet ihr das Volk von seiner Arbeit ab? Gehet hin an euren Frondienst.

Und Pharao sprach: Zahlreich ist das Volk im Lande: ihr sehet, dass es sich stark vermehrt hat; wie viel mehr nun, wenn ihr es von der Arbeit ruhen lasset?

Daher gebot er an jenem Tage den Fronvögten und den Aufsehern des Volkes und sprach:

Ihr sollt dem Volke nicht mehr wie bisher Stroh geben, um Ziegel zu machen, sondern sie sollen selbst hingehen und Stoppeln sammeln.

Und die gleiche Zahl von Ziegeln, wie sie zuvor machten, leget ihnen auf, und mindert nichts daran; denn sie gehen müßig, und deshalb schreien sie und sagen: Wir wollen hinziehen und unserm Gott Opfer bringen.

Sie sollen mit Arbeit überlastet werden und diese vollbringen, dass sie nicht lügenhaften Worten Gehör geben.

Alsbald gingen die Fronvögte und Aufseher hin und sprachen zu dem Volke: Also spricht Pharao: Ich gebe euch kein Stroh;

gehet hin und sammelt, wo ihr es finden könnt, aber an eurer Arbeit wird nichts gemindert.

Da zerstreute sich das Volk im ganzen Lande Ägypten, um Stroh zu sammeln.

Die Aufseher aber drängten sie und sprachen: Liefert täglich die volle Arbeit, wie ihr früher zu tun pflegtet, als man euch Stroh gab.

Und die Werkvorsteher der Söhne Israels wurden von den Aufsehern Pharaos geschlagen und gefragt: warum liefert ihr das anbefohlene Maß von Ziegeln nicht wie früher voll, weder gestern, noch heute?

Da kamen die Vorsteher der Söhne Israels, und erhoben ihre Stimme dor Pharao, und sprachen: Warum verfährst du so gegen deine Knechte?

Man gibt uns kein Stroh und fordert doch die Ziegel in gleicher Weise; siehe, deine Knechte werden mit Geißeln geschlagen, und ungerecht verfährt man wider dein Volk.

Er aber sprach: Ihr gehet müßig und darum sprecht ihr: Wir wollen hinziehen und dem Herrn Opfer darbringen.

Gehet nur hin und arbeitet! Stroh wird euch nicht gegeben werden; aber die gewöhnliche zahl Ziegel müsst ihr liefern.

da sahen die Vorsteher der Söhne Israels, wie übel sie daran waren, weil man ihnen sagte: Es soll nichts an den Ziegeln, die Tag für Tag zu fertigen sind, gemindert werden.

Und sie trafen Moses und Aaron, welche, als sie von Pharao herausgingen, stehen blieben, um ihnen zu begegnen,

und sprachen zu ihnen: Der Herr sehe und richte, dass ihr uns bei Pharao und seinen Knechten in schwere Ungnade gebracht, ja ihm ein Schwert gegeben habt, uns zu töten.

Israels Befreiung wird zugesichert

Da wandte sich Moses wiederum an den Herrn und sprach: O Herr, warum lässest du deinem Volke solches Unheil widerfahren? Warum hast du mich gesendet?

Denn seitdem ich zu Pharao gegangen bin, um in deinem Namen zu reden, hat er deinem Volke Böses getan, und du hast sie nicht befreit.
