- Kapitel 10 -

(Matthew 9:35–38)

Then, after these things, the Lord also designated another seventy-two. And he sent them in pairs before his face, into every city and place where he was to arrive.(a)

And he said to them: “Certainly the harvest is great, but the workers are few. Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers into his harvest.

Go forth. Behold, I send you out like lambs among wolves.

Do not choose to carry a purse, nor provisions, nor shoes; and you shall greet no one along the way.

Into whatever house you will have entered, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’

And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you.

And remain in the same house, eating and drinking the things that are with them. For the worker is worthy of his pay. Do not choose to pass from house to house.

And into whatever city you have entered and they have received you, eat what they set before you.

And cure the sick who are in that place, and proclaim to them, ‘The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.’

But into whatever city you have entered and they have not received you, going out into its main streets, say:

‘Even the dust which clings to us from your city, we wipe away against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has drawn near.’

I say to you, that in that day, Sodom will be forgiven more than that city will be.

Woe to the Unrepentant

(Matthew 11:20–24)

Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that have been wrought in you, had been wrought in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in haircloth and ashes.

Yet truly, Tyre and Sidon will be forgiven more in the judgment than you will be.

And as for you, Capernaum, who would be exalted even up to Heaven: you shall be submerged into Hell.

Whoever hears you, hears me. And whoever despises you, despises me. And whoever despises me, despises him who sent me.”

The Joyful Return

Then the seventy-two returned with gladness, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us, in your name.”

And he said to them: “I was watching as Satan fell like lightning from heaven.

Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the powers of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.

Yet truly, do not choose to rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Jesus’ Prayer of Thanksgiving

(Matthew 11:25–30)

In the same hour, he exulted in the Holy Spirit, and he said: “I confess to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the prudent, and have revealed them to little ones. It is so, Father, because this way was pleasing before you.(b)

All things have been delivered to me by my Father. And no one knows who the Son is, except the Father, and who the Father is, except the Son, and those to whom the Son has chosen to reveal him.”(c)

And turning to his disciples, he said: “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.

For I say to you, that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things that you see, and they did not see them, and to hear the things that you hear, and they did not hear them.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

And behold, a certain expert in the law rose up, testing him and saying, “Teacher, what must I do to possess eternal life?”

But he said to him: “What is written in the law? How do you read it?”

In response, he said: “You shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart, and from your whole soul, and from all your strength, and from all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

And he said to him: “You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.”

But since he wanted to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Then Jesus, taking this up, said: “A certain man descended from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he happened upon robbers, who now also plundered him. And inflicting him with wounds, they went away, leaving him behind, half-alive.

And it happened that a certain priest was descending along the same way. And seeing him, he passed by.

And similarly a Levite, when he was near the place, also saw him, and he passed by.

But a certain Samaritan, being on a journey, came near him. And seeing him, he was moved by mercy.

And approaching him, he bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. And setting him on his pack animal, he brought him to an inn, and he took care of him.(d)

And the next day, he took out two denarii, and he gave them to the proprietor, and he said: ‘Take care of him. And whatever extra you will have spent, I will repay to you at my return.’

Which of these three, does it seem to you, was a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?”

Then he said, “The one who acted with mercy toward him.” And Jesus said to him, “Go, and act similarly.”

Martha and Mary

Now it happened that, while they were traveling, he entered into a certain town. And a certain woman, named Martha, received him into her home.

And she had a sister, named Mary, who, while sitting beside the Lord’s feet, was listening to his word.

Now Martha was continually busying herself with serving. And she stood still and said: “Lord, is it not a concern to you that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore, speak to her, so that she may help me.”

And the Lord responded by saying to her: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled over many things.

And yet only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the best portion, and it shall not be taken away from her.”

Die Aussendung der Siebzig

(Matthäus 9,35-38)

Darnach aber bestimmte der Herr noch andere zweiundsiebzig, und sandte sie je zwei und zwei vor sich her in alle Städte und Ortschaften, wohin er selbst kommen wollte.

Und er sprach zu ihnen: Die Ernte ist zwar groß, aber der Arbeiter sind wenige. Bittet daher den Herrn der Ernte, dass er Arbeiter in seine Ernte sende.

Gehet hin! Siehe, ich sende euch wie Lämmer unter Wölfe.

Traget weder Beutel, noch Tasche, noch Schuhe, und grüßet niemanden auf dem Wege.

Wo ihr immer in ein Haus kommet, da sprechet zuerst: Friede sei mit diesem Hause!

Und wenn da selbst ein Kind des Friedens ist, so wird euer Friede auf ihm ruhen; wo aber nicht, so wird er auf euch zurückkehren.

Bleibet aber in demselben Hause, und esset und trinket, was sie haben; denn der Arbeiter ist seines Lohnes wert. Wandert nicht von einem Hause in das andere.

Und wo immer ihr in eine Stadt kommet, und man euch aufnimmt, da esset, was euch vorgesetzt wird.

Und machet die Kranken gesund, die daselbst sind, und sprechet zu ihnen: Das Reich Gottes hat sich euch genaht.

Wo ihr aber immer in eine Stadt kommet, und sie euch nicht aufnehmen, da gehet heraus auf ihre Gassen, und sprechet:

Auch den Staub, der sich uns von eurer Stadt angehängt hat, schütteln wir wider euch ab; wisset jedoch: Das Reich Gottes hat sich genaht!

Ich sage euch: Es wird Sodoma an jenem Tage erträglicher ergehen, als jener Stadt.

Wehe den unbußfertigen Städten

(Matthäus 11,20-24)

Wehe dir, Korozain! Wehe dir, Bethsaida! denn wenn in Tyrus und Sidon die Wunder geschehen wären, die bei euch geschehen sind, so hätten sie längst schon in härenem Kleide und in der Asche sitzend Buße getan.

Jedoch Thyrus und Sidon wird es erträglicher ergehen im Gerichte, als euch.

Und du Kapharnaum! die du bis zum Himmel erhöht bist, wirst bis in die Hölle versenket werden.

Wer euch höret, höret mich, und wer euch verachtet, verachtet mich; wer aber mich verachtet, verachtet den, der mich gesandt hat.

Die Siebzig kehren mit Freude zurück

Es kehrten aber die Zweiundsiebzig mit Freuden zurück, und sprachen: Herr! auch die bösen Geister sind uns untertan in deinem Namen.

Er sprach zu ihnen: Ich sah den Satan wie einen Blitz vom Himmel fallen.

Sehet, ich habe euch die Gewalt gegeben, auf Schlangen und Skorpionen zu treten, und über alle Gewalt des Feindes, und nichts wird euch schaden;

jedoch freuet euch nicht darüber, dass euch die Geister unterworfen sind, sondern freuet euch, dass eure Namen im Himmel eingeschrieben stehen.

Jesus jubelt im Geiste

(Matthäus 11,25-30)

In derselben Stunde frohlockte Jesus im heiligen Geiste, und sprach: Ich preise dich, Vater, Herr des Himmels und der Erde! dass du dieses vor Weisen und Klugen verborgen, Kleinen aber geoffenbaret hast. Ja, Vater! denn also ist es wohlgefällig gewesen vor dir.

Alles ist mir von meinem Vater übergeben; und niemand weiß, wer der Sohn ist, als der Vater; und niemand weiss, wer der Vater ist, als der Sohn, und wem es der Sohn offenbaren will.

Und er wandte sich zu seinen Jüngern, und sprach: Selig die Augen, welche sehen, was ihr sehet!

Denn ich sage euch, viele Propheten und Könige verlangten zu sehen, was ihr sehet, und sahen es nicht; und zu hören, was ihr höret, und hörten es nicht.

Das Gleichnis vom barmherzigen Samariter

Und siehe, ein Gesetzeslehrer trat auf, ihn zu versuchen, und sprach: Meister! was muss ich tun, um das ewige Leben zu ererben?

Er aber sprach zu ihm: Was steht geschrieben im Gesetze? Wie liesest du?

Jener antwortete, und sprach: Du sollst den Herrn, deinen Gott, lieben aus deinem ganzen Herzen, aus deiner ganzen Seele, aus allen deinen Kräften, und von deinem ganzen Gemüte; und deinen Nächsten wie dich selbst.

Da sprach er zu ihm: Du hast recht geantwortet; dies tue, so wirst du leben!

Jener aber wollte sich rechtfertigen, und sprach zu Jesus: Wer ist denn mein Nächster?

Da nahm Jesus das Brot, und sprach: Es ging ein Mensch von Jerusalem nach Jericho, und fiel unter Räuber. Diese zogen ihn aus, schlugen ihn wund, und gingen hinweg, indem sie ihn halbtot liegen ließen.

Da fügte es sich, dass ein Priester denselben Weg hinabzog; und er sah ihn, und ging vorüber.

Desgleichen auch ein Levit; er kam an den Ort, sah ihn, und ging vorüber.

Ein reisender Samariter aber kam zu ihm, sah ihn, und ward von Mitleid gerührt.

Und er trat zu ihm hin, goß Öl und Wein in seine Wunden, und verband sie; dann hob er ihn auf sein Lasttier, führte ihn in die Herberge, und trug Sorge für ihn.

Des andern Tags zog er zwei Denare heraus, gab sie dem Wirte, und sprach: Trage Sorge für ihn, und was du noch darüber aufwendest, werde ich dir bezahlen, wenn ich zurückkomme!

Welcher von diesen Dreien scheint dir der Nächste für den gewesen zu sein, der unter die Räuber gefallen war?

Jener aber sprach: Der, welcher die Barmherzigkeit an ihm geübt hat. Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin, und tue du desgleichen!

Maria und Martha beten an und dienen

Es geschah aber, als sie dahinzogen, dass er in einen Flecken kam. Da nahm ihn ein Weib, mit Namen Martha, in ihr Herz auf.

Und sie hatte eine Schwester, die Maria hieß. Diese setzte sich zu den Füßen des Herrn, und hörte seinem Worte zu.

Martha aber machte sich viel zu schaffen, um ihn mannigfach zu bedienen, und sie trat hinzu, und sprach: Herr! kümmert es dich nicht, dass meine Schwester mich allein gelassen hat zur Bedienung? Sage ihr doch, dass sie mir helfe!

Und der Herr antwortete, und sprach zu ihr: Martha, Martha! du machst dir Sorge und Unruhe um sehr viele Dinge.

Eines nur ist notwendig. Maria hat den besten Teil erwählt, der ihr nicht wird genommen werden.
