- Kapitel 11 -

(Matthew 6:5–15)

And it happened that, while he was in a certain place praying, when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

And he said to them: “When you are praying, say: Father, may your name be kept holy. May your kingdom come.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins, since we also forgive all who are indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

Ask, Seek, Knock

(Matthew 7:7–12)

And he said to them: “Which of you will have a friend and will go to him in the middle of the night, and will say to him: ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,

because a friend of mine has arrived from a journey to me, and I do not have anything to set before him.’

And from within, he would answer by saying: ‘Do not disturb me. The door is closed now, and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up and give it to you.’

Yet if he will persevere in knocking, I tell you that, even though he would not get up and give it to him because he is a friend, yet due to his continued insistence, he will get up and give him whatever he needs.

And so I say to you: Ask, and it shall be given to you. Seek, and you shall find. Knock, and it shall be opened to you.

For everyone who asks, receives. And whoever seeks, finds. And whoever knocks, it shall be opened to him.

So then, who among you, if he asks his father for bread, he would give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, he would give him a serpent, instead of a fish?

Or if he will ask for an egg, he would offer to him a scorpion?

Therefore, if you, being evil, know how to give good things to your sons, how much more will your Father give, from heaven, a spirit of goodness to those who ask him?”(a)

A House Divided

(Matthew 12:22–30; Mark 3:20–27)

And he was casting out a demon, and the man was mute. But when he had cast out the demon, the mute man spoke, and so the crowds were amazed.

But some of them said, “It is by Beelzebub, the leader of demons, that he casts out demons.”

And others, testing him, required a sign from heaven of him.

But when he perceived their thoughts, he said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself will become desolate, and house will fall upon house.

So then, if Satan is also divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebub that I cast out demons.

But if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your own sons cast them out? Therefore, they shall be your judges.

Moreover, if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then certainly the kingdom of God has overtaken you.

When a strong armed man guards his entrance, the things that he possesses are at peace.

But if a stronger one, overwhelming him, has defeated him, he will take away all his weapons, in which he trusted, and he will distribute his spoils.

Whoever is not with me, is against me. And whoever does not gather with me, scatters.

An Unclean Spirit Returns

(Matthew 12:43–45)

When an unclean spirit has departed from a man, he walks through waterless places, seeking rest. And not finding any, he says: ‘I will return to my house, from which I departed.’

And when he has arrived, he finds it swept clean and decorated.

Then he goes, and he takes in seven other spirits with him, more wicked than himself, and they enter and live there. And so, the end of that man is made worse than the beginning.”

True Blessedness

And it happened that, when he was saying these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you.”

Then he said, “Yes, but moreover: blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.”

The Sign of Jonah

(Jonah 3:1–10; Matthew 12:38–42)

Then, as the crowds were quickly gathering, he began to say: “This generation is a wicked generation: it seeks a sign. But no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

For just as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of man be to this generation.

The queen of the South will rise up, at the judgment, with the men of this generation, and she will condemn them. For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And behold, more than Solomon is here.

The men of Nineveh will rise up, at the judgment, with this generation, and they will condemn it. For at the preaching of Jonah, they repented. And behold, more than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body

(Matthew 6:22–24)

No one lights a candle and places it in hiding, nor under a bushel basket, but upon a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.

Your eye is the light of your body. If your eye is wholesome, your entire body will be filled with light. But if it is wicked, then even your body will be darkened.

Therefore, take care, lest the light that is within you become darkness.

So then, if your entire body becomes filled with light, not having any part in darkness, then it will be entirely light, and, like a shining lamp, it will illuminate you.”

Woes to Pharisees and Experts in the Law

(Matthew 23:1–36)

And as he was speaking, a certain Pharisee asked him to eat with him. And going inside, he sat down to eat.

But the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself: “Why might it be that he has not washed before eating?”

And the Lord said to him: “You Pharisees today clean what is outside the cup and the plate, but what is inside of you is full of plunder and iniquity.

Fools! Did not he who made what is outside, indeed also make what is inside?

Yet truly, give what is above as alms, and behold, all things are clean for you.(b)

But woe to you, Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you ignore judgment and the charity of God. But these things you ought to have done, without omitting the others.

Woe to you, Pharisees! For you love the first seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the marketplace.

Woe to you! For you are like graves that are not noticeable, so that men walk over them without realizing it.”

Then one of the experts in the law, in response, said to him, “Teacher, in saying these things, you bring an insult against us as well.”

So he said: “And woe to you experts in the law! For you weigh men down with burdens which they are not able to bear, but you yourselves do not touch the weight with even one of your fingers.(c)

Woe to you, who build the tombs of the prophets, while it is your fathers who killed them!(e)

Clearly, you are testifying that you consent to the actions of your fathers, because even though they killed them, you build their sepulchers.

Because of this also, the wisdom of God said: I will send to them Prophets and Apostles, and some of these they will kill or persecute,

so that the blood of all the Prophets, which has been shed since the foundation of the world, may be charged against this generation:

from the blood of Abel, even to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. So I say to you: it will be required of this generation!(f)

Woe to you, experts in the law! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves do not enter, and those who were entering, you would have prohibited.”

Then, while he was saying these things to them, the Pharisees and the experts in the law began to insist strongly that he restrain his mouth about many things.

And waiting to ambush him, they sought something from his mouth that they might seize upon, in order to accuse him.

Das Mustergebet

(Matthäus 6,5-15)

Und es geschah, da er an einem Orte betete, sprach, als er aufhörte, einer von seinen Jüngern zu ihm: Herr! lehre uns beten, wie auch Johannes seine Jünger es gelehret hat.

Und er sprach zu ihnen: Wenn ihr betet, so sprechet: Vater, geheiligt werde dein Name! Zukomme uns dein Reich!

Gib uns unser tägliches Brot heute!

Und vergib uns unsere Sünden, wie auch wir vergeben allen unsern Schuldigern! Und führe uns nicht in Versuchung!

Ein Freund kommt um Mitternacht

(Matthäus 7,7-12)

Und er sprach zu ihnen: Wenn einer von euch einen Freund hätte, und er käme zu ihm um Mitternacht, und spräche zu ihm: Freund! leihe mir drei Brote,

denn ein Freund von mir ist auf der Reise zu mir gekommen, und ich habe nichts ihm vorzusetzen;

und wenn jener von innen antwortete, und spräche: Belästige mich nicht, schon ist die Türe zugeschlossen, und meine Kinder sind bei mir in der Kammer, ich kann nicht aufstehen, und dir geben.

Und wenn jener doch nicht abließe anzuklopfen: so sage ich euch, wenn er auch nicht aufstünde, und ihm darum gäbe, weil er sein Freund ist, so wird er doch wegen seines Ungestümes aufstehen, und ihm geben, so viel er nötig hat.

Bitten, suchen, anklopfen

Auch ich sage euch: Bittet, so wird euch gegeben werden; suchet, so werdet ihr finden; klopfet an, so wird euch aufgetan werden.

Denn jeder, der bittet, empfängt; wer sucht, findet; und wer anklopft, dem wird aufgetan werden.

Und wer von euch bittet seinen Vater um Brot, und erhält von ihm einen Stein? Oder um einen Fisch, und erhält von ihm statt des Fisches eine Schlange?

Oder wenn er um ein Ei bittet, wird er ihm etwa einen Skorpion reichen?

Wenn nun ihr, obschon ihr böse seid, euren Kindern gute Gaben zu geben wisset, wie viel mehr wird euer Vater vom Himmel den guten Geist denen geben, die ihn darum bitten!

Ein geteiltes Haus kann nicht bestehen

(Matthäus 12,22-30; Markus 3,20-27)

Und er trieb einen bösen Geist aus, der stumm war. Und als er den bösen Geist ausgetrieben hatte, redete der Stumme, und das Volk verwunderte sich.

Einige aber von ihnen sagten: Durch Beelzebub, den Obersten der bösen Geister, treibt er die bösen Geister aus.

Andere versuchten ihn, und forderten von ihm ein Zeichen vom Himmel.

Als er aber ihre Gedanken sah, sprach er zu ihnen: Jedes Reich, das wider sich selbst uneins ist, wird verwüstet werden, und ein Haus wird über das andere fallen.

Wenn nun auch der Satan wider sich selbst uneins ist, wie wird denn sein Reich bestehen? Denn ihr saget, ich treibe durch Beelzebub die bösen Geister aus.

Und wenn ich durch Beelzebub die bösen Geister austreibe, durch wen treiben denn eure Kinder sie aus? Darum werden sie eure Richter sein.

Wenn ich aber durch den Finger Gottes die bösen Geister austreibe, so ist ja doch wohl das Reich Gottes zu euch gekommen.

Wenn der Starke bewaffnet seinen Hof bewacht, so ist alles sicher, was er hat.

Wenn aber ein Stärkerer, als er, über ihn kommt, und ihn überwindet, so nimmt er ihm seine ganze Waffenrüstung, auf welche er sich verließ, und verteilt seine Beute.

Wer nicht mit mir ist, der ist wider mich; und wer nicht mit mir sammelt, der zerstreuet.

Ein unreiner Geist kehrt zurück

(Matthäus 12,43-45)

Wenn der unreine Geist von dem Menschen ausgefahren ist, wandert er durch dürre Orte, und suchet Ruhe; und weil er sie nicht findet, spricht er: Ich will in mein Haus zurückkehren, von dem ich ausgegangen bin.

Und wenn er kommt, findet er es mit Besen gereinigt und geschmückt.

Alsdann geht er hin, nimmt noch sieben andere Geister mit sich, die schlimmer sind als er, und sie ziehen ein, und wohnen daselbst. Und die letzten Dinge dieses Menschen werden ärger als die ersten.

Das Wort bewahren

Es geschah aber, als er dies redete, erhob ein Weib unter dem Volke ihre Stimme, und sprach zu ihm: Selig der Leib, der dich getragen hat, und die Brust, die dich genährt hat!

Er aber sprach: Ja, freilich selig, welche Gottes Wort hören, und es beobachten!

Suche nach einem Zeichen

(Jona 3,1-10; Matthäus 12,38-42)

Als aber das Volk sich versammelte, fing er an zu sagen: Dieses Geschlecht ist ein böses Geschlecht; es verlangt ein Zeichen, aber es wird ihm kein Zeichen gegeben werden, als das Zeichen Jonas, des Propheten.

Denn gleich wie Jonas den Niniviten ein Zeichen war, so wird es auch der Menschensohn diesem Geschlechte sein.

Die Königin von Mittag wird im Gerichte wider die Männer dieses Geschlechtes auftreten und sie verdammen; denn sie kam von den Enden der Erde, um die Weisheit Salomons zu hören; und siehe, hier ist mehr als Salomon!

Die Männer von Ninive werden im Gerichte wider dieses Geschlecht auftreten, und es verdammen; denn sie haben auf die Predigt des Jonas Buße getan; und siehe, hier ist mehr als Jonas!

Die Lampe des Leibes

(Matthäus 6,22-24)

Niemand zündet ein Licht an, und stellt es an einen verborgenen Ort, noch unter den Scheffel, sondern auf den Leuchter, damit die Eintretenden das Licht sehen.

Die Leuchte deines Leibes ist dein Auge. Wenn dein Auge unverdorben ist, so wird dein ganzer Leib Licht sein; wenn es aber schlecht ist, so wird auch dein Leib finster sein.

Siehe also zu, dass das Licht, welches in dir ist, nicht Finsternis sei!

Wenn daher dein Leib ganz erleuchtet ist, und nichts Finsteres an sich hat, so wird er ganz erleuchtet sein, und dich erhellen, wie das Leuchten des Blitzes.

Wehe den Pharisäern und Anwälten

(Matthäus 23,1-36)

Als er so redete, bat ihn ein Pharisäer, dass er bei ihm zu Mittag speisen möchte. Und er ging hinein, und setzte sich zu Tische.

Der Pharisäer aber fing an, bei sich zu denken und zu sagen: Warum doch hat er sich nicht gewaschen vor der Mahlzeit?

Und der Herr sprach zu ihm: Nun denn, ihr Pharisäer, das Auswendige des Bechers und der Schüssel reinigt ihr; euer Inwendiges aber ist voll Raub und Ungerechtigkeit.

Ihr Toren! hat nicht der, welcher das Auswendige gemacht hat, auch das Inwendige gemacht?

Gebet lieber von dem, was euch übrig ist, Almosen; und siehe, alles ist euch rein!

Aber wehe euch Pharisäern! Ihr verzehntet die Krausemünze, die Weinraute und jedes Gemüse; aber das Recht und die Liebe Gottes übertretet ihr. Dieses muss man tun, und jenes nicht unterlassen.

Wehe euch Pharisäern! die ihr die ersten Plätze in den Synagogen und die Begrüßungen auf dem Markte liebet.

Wehe euch, die ihr wie die Gräber seid, welche man nicht sieht, und über welche die Leute hingehen, ohne es zu wissen!

Ein Gesetzesgelehrter aber antwortete, und sprach zu ihm: Meister! wenn du dieses sagest, schmähest du auch uns.

Er aber sprach: Wehe auch euch, ihr Gesetzesgelehrten! Denn ihr leget den Menschen Lasten auf, die sie nicht tragen können, und ihr selbst berühret die Bürden nicht mit einem eurer Finger.

Wehe euch, ihr bauet die Grabmäler der Propheten; eure Väter aber haben sie getötet!

Wahrlich, ihr bezeuget damit, dass ihr den Taten eurer Väter beistimmet; denn diese zwar haben sie getötet, ihr aber bauet ihre Gräber!

Darum hat auch die Weisheit Gottes gesprochen: Ich werde Propheten und Apostel zu ihnen senden; und von diesen werden sie einige töten und verfolgen,

damit das Blut aller Propheten, das seit Anfang der Welt vergossen ward, von diesem Geschlechte gefordert werde,

vom Blute Abels bis zum Blute des Zacharias, der zwischen dem Altare und dem Tempel umgekommen ist. Ja, ich sage euch, von diesem Geschlechte wird es gefordert werden!

Wehe euch Gesetzesgelehrten! Weil ihr den Schlüssel der Erkenntnis weggenommen habet, ihr selbst aber seid nicht hineingegangen, und denen, die hineingehen wollten, habet ihr es gewehret.

Als er aber dieses zu ihnen sagte, fingen die Pharisäer und Gesetzesgelehrten an, ihm heftig zuzusetzen, um ihn mit vielen Reden zu überschreien.

indem sie ihm eine Falle zu legen und etwas aus seinem Munde aufzufangen suchten, um ihn anklagen zu können.
