- Kapitel 2 -

The zeal and success of Mathathias. His exhortation to his sons at his death.

In those days Mattathias the son of John, the son of Simeon, a priest of the sons of Joarib, from Jerusalem rose up; and he lived at Modin.
2
And he had five sons:(a) John, who was surnamed Gaddis;
3
Simon, who was called Thassi;
4
Judas, who was called Maccabaeus;
5
Eleazar, who was called Avaran; and Jonathan, who was called Apphus.
6
He saw the blasphemies that were committed in Judah and in Jerusalem,
7
and he said, “Woe is me! Why was I born to see the destruction of my people and the destruction of the holy city, and to dwell there when it was given into the hand of the enemy, the sanctuary into the hand of foreigners?
8
Her temple has become like a man who was glorious.
9
Her vessels of glory are carried away into captivity. Her infants are slain in her streets. Her young men are slain with the enemy’s sword.
10
What nation has not inherited her palaces and taken possession of her spoils?
11
Her adornment has all been taken away. Instead of a free woman, she has become a slave.
12
Behold, our holy things, our beauty, and our glory are laid waste. The Gentiles have profaned them.
13
Why should we live any longer?”

Mattathias and his sons tore their clothes, put on sackcloth, and mourned exceedingly.
15
And the king’s officers who were enforcing the apostasy came into the city Modin to sacrifice.
16
Many of Israel came to them, and Mattathias and his sons were gathered together.
17
The king’s officers answered and spoke to Mattathias, saying, “You are a ruler and an honorable and great man in this city, and strengthened with sons and kindred.
18
Now therefore come first and do the commandment of the king, as all the nations have done, including the men of Judah and those who remain in Jerusalem. You and your house will be numbered among the king’s(b) friends, and you and your sons will be honored with silver and gold and many gifts.”
19
And Mattathias answered and said with a loud voice, “If all the nations that are in the house of the king’s dominion listen to him, to fall away each one from the worship of his fathers, and have made choice to follow his commandments,
20
yet I and my sons and my kindred will walk in the covenant of our fathers.
21
Far be it from us that we should forsake the law and the ordinances.
22
We will not listen to the king’s words, to turn aside from our worship, to the right hand, or to the left.”
23
When he had finished speaking these words, a Jew came in the sight of all to sacrifice on the altar which was at Modin, according to the king’s commandment.
24
Mattathias saw it, so his zeal was kindled, and his guts trembled, and he vented his wrath according to judgment, and ran and killed him upon the altar.
25
He killed the king’s officer, who compelled men to sacrifice, at the same time, and pulled down the altar.
26
He was zealous for the law, even as Phinehas did to Zimri the son of Salu.
27
Mattathias cried out in the city with a loud voice, saying, “Whoever is zealous for the law and maintains the covenant, let him follow me!”
28
He and his sons fled into the mountains, and left all that they had in the city.
29
Then many who sought justice and judgment went down into the wilderness to live there—
30
they, their children, their wives, and their livestock—because evils were multiplied upon them.
31
It was told the king’s officers and the forces that were in Jerusalem, the city of David, that certain men who had broken the king’s commandment had gone down into the secret places in the wilderness;
32
and many pursued after them, and having overtaken them, they encamped against them and set the battle in array against them on the Sabbath day.
33
They said to them, “Enough of this! Come out and do according to the word of the king, and you will all live!”
34
They said, “We won’t come out. We won’t do the word of the king, to profane the Sabbath day.”
35
Then the enemy hurried to attack them.
36
They didn’t answer them. They didn’t cast a stone at them, or block their secret places,
37
saying, “Let’s all die in our innocence. Heaven and earth testify for us, that you put us to death unjustly.”
38
So they attacked them on the Sabbath, and they died—they, their wives, their children, and their livestock—in number a thousand souls of men.
39
When Mattathias and his friends found out about it, and they mourned over them exceedingly.
40
One said to another, “If we all do as our kindred have done, and don’t fight against the Gentiles for our lives and our ordinances, they will quickly destroy us from off the earth.”
41
So they decided that day, saying, “Whoever comes against us to battle on the Sabbath day, let’s fight against him, and we will in no way all die, as our kindred died in the secret places.”
42
Then a company of the Hasidaeans,(c) mighty men of Israel, everyone who offered himself willingly for the law, were gathered together to them.
43
All those who fled from the evils were added to them, and supported them.
44
They mustered an army, and struck sinners in their anger, and lawless men in their wrath. The rest fled to the Gentiles for safety.
45
And Mattathias and his friends went around and pulled down the altars.
46
They forcibly circumcised the boys who were uncircumcised, as many as they found in the coasts of Israel.
47
They pursued the arrogant, and the work prospered in their hand.
48
They rescued the law out of the hand of the Gentiles and out of the hand of the kings. They never allowed the sinner to triumph.
49
The days of Mattathias drew near that he should die, and he said to his sons, “Now pride and scorn have gained strength. It is a season of overthrow and indignant wrath.
50
Now, my children, be zealous for the law, and give your lives for the covenant of your fathers.
51
Call to remembrance the deeds of our fathers which they did in their generations; and receive great glory and an everlasting name.
52
Wasn’t Abraham found faithful in temptation, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness?
53
Joseph in the time of his distress kept the commandment, and became lord of Egypt.
54
Phinehas our father, because he was exceedingly zealous, obtained the covenant of an everlasting priesthood.
55
Joshua became a judge in Israel for fulfilling the word.
56
Caleb obtained a heritage in the land for testifying in the congregation.
57
David inherited the throne of a kingdom forever and ever for being merciful.
58
Elijah was taken up into heaven because he was exceedingly zealous for the law.
59
Hananiah, Azariah, and Mishael believed, and were saved out of the flame.
60
Daniel was delivered from the mouth of lions for his innocence.
61
“Thus consider from generation to generation that no one who put their trust in him will lack for strength.
62
Don’t be afraid of the words of a sinful man; for his glory will be dung and worms.
63
Today he will be lifted up, and tomorrow he will in no way be found, because he has returned to dust, and his thought has perished.
64
You, my children, be strong, and show yourselves men on behalf of the law; for in it you will obtain glory.
65
Behold, Simon your brother, whom I know to be a man of counsel. Always listen to him. He shall be a father to you.
66
Judas Maccabaeus has been strong and mighty from his youth. He shall be your captain and shall fight(d) the battle of the people.
67
Rally around all the doers of the law, and avenge the wrong done to your people.
68
Repay the Gentiles, and obey the commandments of the law.”
69
He blessed them, and was gathered to his ancestors.
70
He died in(e) the one hundred forty sixth year, and his sons buried him in the tombs of his ancestors at Modin. All Israel made great lamentation for him.

Der Eifer und Erfolg von Mathathias. Seine Ermahnung an seine Söhne bei seinem Tod

In jenen Tagen erhob sich Mathathias, der Sohn Johannes, des Sohnes Simeons, Priester aus der Familie Joaribs von Jerusalem, der auf dem Berge zu Modin wohnte

und fünf Söhne hatte: Johannes, mit dem Zunamen Gaddis,

Simon, mit dem Zunamen Thasi,
4
Judas, der der Machabäer genannt wurde,
5
Eleazar, mit dem Zunamen Abaron, und Jonathan, mit dem Zunamen Apphus.
6
Als diese das Böse sahen, das unter dem Volke von Juda und in Jerusalem geschah,
7
sprach Mathathias: Wehe mir! warum bin ich geboren, diese Vernichtung meines Volkes und die Vernichtung der heiligen Stadt zu sehen und dabei untätig zu sitzen, während sie in die Gewalt der Feinde gegeben wird?

Das Heiligtum ist in die Hände der Fremden geraten und ihr Tempel ist wie das Haus eines ehrlosen Menschen geworden.

Ihre herrlichen Geräte sind als Beute fortgeführt, ihre Greise wurden auf ihren Straßen getötet und ihre Jünglinge sind durch das Schwert der Feinde gefallen.

Welches Volk hat nicht ihr Reich in Besitz genommen und sich nicht ihrer Beute bemächtigt?
11
All ihr Schmuck ist hinweggenommen, sie, die frei war, ist eine Sklavin geworden.
12
Und siehe, unser Heiligtum, unsere Schönheit, unsere Herrlichkeit ist verheert und die Heiden haben sie entweiht.
13
Wozu sollen wir denn noch leben?
14
Und Mathathias und seine Söhne zerrissen ihre Kleider und legten Bußkleider an und trugen schweres Leid.
15
Es kamen aber Abgesandte vom Könige Antiochus dorthin, um alle, die sich in die Stadt Modin geflüchtet, zu zwingen, Schlachtopfer und Rauchopfer darzubringen und vom Gesetze Gottes abzufallen.
16
Während nun viele aus dem Volke Israel sich fügten und sich ihnen anschlossen, blieben Mathathias und seine Söhne standhaft.
17
Da begannen die, welche von Antiochus gesandt waren, und sprachen zu Mathathias: Du bist der Erste, Angesehenste und Größte in dieser Stadt und mächtig durch Söhne und Brüder;
18
so tritt nun zuerst herzu und tue, wie der König befiehlt, so wie dies alle Völker und die Männer von Juda und die in Jerusalem Zurückgebliebenen getan haben; so wirst du mit deinen Söhnen zu den Freunden des Königs gehören und mit Gold, Silber und vielen Geschenken überhäuft werden.

Mathathias aber antwortete und sprach mit lauter Stimme: Wenn auch alle Völker dem Könige Antiochus gehorchen, dass ein jeder von dem gebotenen Gottesdienste seiner Väter abfällt und sich seinen Geboten fügt,

so werden doch ich und meine Söhne und meine Brüder dem Gesetze unserer Väter gehorchen.
21
Gott bewahre uns davor! Es frommt uns nicht, das Gesetz und die Vorschriften Gottes zu verlassen.
22
Den Worten des Könige Antiochus werden wir nicht gehorchen und nicht opfern, dass wir so die Gebote unseres Gesetzes übertreten und einen andern Weg einschlagen sollten.
23
Nachdem er alle diese Worte gesprochen, trat ein Jude vor aller Augen herzu, um den Götzen auf dem Altare der Stadt Modin dem Befehle des Königs gemäß zu opfern.
24
Als Mathathias dies sah, ergriff ihn Schmerz und sein Inneres erbebte und sein Zorn entbrannte, der Vorschrift des Gesetzes gemäß, und herzueilend tötete er ihn am Altare.
25
Aber auch den Mann, welchen der König Antiochus gesandt, der zu opfern zwingen sollte, tötete er zur selben Zeit und riss den Altar nieder.
26
Und er eiferte für das Gesetz, wie Phinees dem Zamri, dem Sohne Saloms, gegenüber getan.
27
Sodann ließ Mathathias in der Stadt mit lauter Stimme ausrufen: Wer immer für das Gesetz eifert und den Bund aufrecht hält, ziehe aus, mir nach!
28
So flohen er und seine Söhne auf das Gebirge und ließen alles zurück, was sie in der Stadt hatten.
29
Zur selben Zeit zogen viele, welche Recht und Gerechtigkeit suchten, in die Wüste hinab
30
und blieben daselbst mit ihren Kindern, ihren Frauen und ihrem Vieh, weil immer neues Unheil über sie kam.
31
Indes wurde den Männern des Königs und dem Heere, das in Jerusalem, in der Davidsstadt, war, berichtet, dass Leute, welche das Gebot des Königs verwarfen, in Schlupfwinkel der Wüste entwichen und viele ihnen gefolgt seien.
32
Alsbald zogen jene gegen sie aus und rüsteten sich zum Kampfe wider sie am Sabbate.
33
Und sie sprachen zu ihnen: Wolltet ihr auch jetzt noch Widerstand leisten? Kommet heraus und tuet nach dem Befehle des Königs Antiochus, so sollt ihr am Leben bleiben.

Sie aber antworteten: Wir werden nicht hinauskommen und nicht nach dem Befehle des Königs tun, dass wir den Sabbat entheiligen sollten.
35
Da beeilten sich jene, einen Angriff auf sie zu machen.
36
Diese aber antworteten ihnen nicht noch schleuderten sie einen Stein auf sie noch verrammelten sie ihre Schlupfwinkel,
37
sondern sprachen: Lasset uns alle sterben in unserer Unschuld! Himmel und Erde werden Zeugen für uns sein, dass ihr uns ungerechterweise tötet.
38
Jene also griffen sie am Sabbate an und sie kamen mit ihren Frauen und ihren Kindern und ihrem Vieh um, gegen tausend Seelen.
39
Als Mathathias und seine Freunde dies erfuhren, trauerten sie gar sehr um sie.
40
Und sie sprachen untereinander: Wenn wir alle tun, wie unsere Brüder getan haben, und nicht wider die Heiden um unser Leben und für unser Gesetz kämpfen, so werden sie uns bald von der Erde vertilgen.
41
Sie beschlossen also an jenem Tage und sprachen: Gegen jeden, der uns am Sabbatstage angreift, wollen wir kämpfen, dass wir nicht alle sterben, wie unsere Brüder in den Schlupfwinkeln gestorben sind.
42
Hierauf sammelten sich die Assidæer zu ihnen, eine tapfere Schar aus Israel, alle Eiferer für das Gesetz.
43
Auch alle, welche vor dem Unheil flohen, begaben sich zu ihnen und brachten ihnen Verstärkung.
44
So bildeten sie ein Heer und schlugen die Sünder in ihrem Zorn und die Gottlosen in ihrem Grimm, während die Übriggebliebenen zu den Heiden flohen, um zu entkommen.
45
Mathathias aber und seine Genossen zogen umher, zerstörten die Altäre
46
und beschnitten alle unbeschnittenen Knaben, soviel sie innerhalb der Grenzen Israels fanden, und zeigten sich als tapfere Männer.
47
Sie verfolgten die Übermütigen und ihr Beginnen hatte gutes Gelingen.
48
Und sie befreiten das Gesetz aus der Gewalt der Heiden und aus der Hand der Könige und ließen die Sünder nicht emporkommen.
49
Als nun die Zeit herankam, dass Mathathias sterben sollte, sprach er zu seinen Söhnen: Jetzt ist der Übermut mächtig geworden und die Züchtigung und es ist eine Zeit der Verwüstung und grimmiger Zorn.
50
So eifert denn nun, meine Söhne! für das Gesetz und gebet euer Leben für den Bund eurer Väter hin.
51
Seid der Taten eurer Väter eingedenk, welche jene zu ihrer Zeit vollbrachten, und ihr werdet großen Ruhm und einen unsterblichen Namen erlangen.

Ward nicht Abraham treu erfunden in der Prüfung und ihm dies zur Gerechtigkeit angerechnet?
53
Joseph beobachtete in der Zeit seiner Bedrängnis das Gebot und ward so Herr von Ägypten.
54
Phinees, unser Ahne, hatte brennenden Eifer für Gott und erhielt deshalb die Verheißung des Priestertums auf immer.
55
Da Jesus den Befehl erfüllte, ward er Führer in Israel.
56
Weil Kaleb in der Versammlung Zeugnis ablegte, erhielt er Erbbesitz.
57
David erlangte durch seine Barmherzigkeit den Thron des Reiches auf ewige Zeiten.
58
Elias ward, da er für das Gesetz eiferte, in den Himmel aufgenommen.
59
Ananias, Azarias und Misael glaubten und wurden deshalb aus den Flammen errettet.
60
Daniel ward ob seiner Lauterkeit vor dem Rachen der Löwen errettet.
61
Und so erwäget von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht, dass alle, die auf ihn hoffen, nicht unterliegen.
62
Daher fürchtet euch nicht vor den Drohungen eines sündhaften Menschen, denn seine Herrlichkeit ist Kot und Gewürm.
63
Heute erhebt er sich und morgen ist er nicht mehr zu finden, denn er ist wieder in feinen Staub zurückgekehrt und seine Anschläge sind vernichtet.
64
Darum, meine Söhne! Seid stark und tretet mannhaft für das Gesetz ein, denn durch dasselbe werdet ihr verherrlicht werden.
65
Und siehe, euer Bruder Simon, von ihm weiß ich, dass er ein Mann des Rates ist; auf ihn höret allezeit, er soll euch Vater sein.
66
Judas, der Machabäer, stark und tapfer von seiner Jugend an, soll euer Heerführer sein und den Kampf des Volkes führen.
67
Ihr aber sammelt zu euch alle, welche das Gesetz beobachten, und nehmet Rache für euer Volk.
68
Übet Vergeltung an den Heiden und seid bedacht auf die Gebote des Gesetzes!
69
Hierauf segnete er sie und ward seinen Vätern beigesellt.
70
Er starb im einhundertundsechsundvierzigsten Jahre und ward von seinen Söhnen in der Grabstätte seiner Väter zu Modin begraben und ganz Israel hielt über ihn große Trauerklage.
