The Prophet Jonah

- Kapitel 3 -

(Matthew 12:38–42; Luke 11:29–32)

Then Yahweh said to Jonah again,

“Go to that huge city of Nineveh, and tell them the message that I gave you previously.”

So this time Jonah obeyed Yahweh, and he went to Nineveh. That city was very big. A person had to walk for three days to completely go through it.

When Jonah arrived, he began walking through the city for one day. Then he started to proclaim to the people, “Forty days from now, Nineveh will be destroyed!”

The people of Nineveh believed God’s message. They all decided that everyone should begin fasting. So everyone, including all the important people and all the unimportant people, did that. They also put on coarse cloth, to show that they were sorry for having sinned.

The king of Nineveh heard about Jonah’s message. So he took off his royal robes, and he also put on coarse cloth. He left his throne and sat down where there were cold ashes, to show that he also was sorry for having sinned.

Then he sent messengers to proclaim to the people in Nineveh: “My advisors and I have decreed that no one may eat or drink anything. Do not even allow your animals to eat or drink.

Instead, every person must put on coarse cloth. Put coarse cloth on your animals, too. Then everyone must pray fervently to God. And everyone must stop doing evil actions, and stop acting violently toward others.

Perhaps, if everyone does that, God may change his mind and be merciful to us, and stop being very angry with us. If that happens, we will not die.”

When they all did that, God saw what they were doing, and he saw that they had stopped doing evil actions. So he pitied them, and he did not get rid of them as he had threatened to do.

Jona verkündigt in Ninive

(Matthäus 12,38-42; Lukas 11,29-32)

Hierauf erging zum zweiten Male das Wort des Herrn an Jonas, also lautend:

Mache dich auf und begib dich nach Ninive, der großen Stadt, und verkünde daselbst die Botschaft, welche ich dir mitteile!

Da machte sich Jonas auf und ging nach Ninive dem Wort des Herrn gemäß; Ninive aber war eine große Stadt, drei Tagreisen im Umfange.

Und Jonas begann in die Stadt zu gehen eine Tagreise weit und rief und sprach: Noch vierzig Tage, so wird Ninive zerstört.

Das Volk von Ninive glaubt

Da glaubten die Leute von Ninive an Gott und riefen ein Fasten aus und zogen Bußkleider an, groß und klein.

Auch zu dem Könige in Ninive drang die Kunde, da erhob er sich von seinem Throne, warf sein Gewand von sich, legte ein Bußkleid an und setzte sich in Asche.

Und er ließ in Ninive ausrufen und sagen als des Königs und seiner Großen Befehl, also: Menschen und Tiere, Rinder und Schafe sollen nichts essen und sollen weder auf die Weide kommen noch Wasser trinken.

vielmehr sollen Menschen und Tiere sich in Bußkleider hüllen und sollen den Herrn mit aller Macht anrufen und ein jeder soll von seinem schlimmen Wandel umkehren und von der Verschuldung, die an seinen Händen klebt.

Vielleicht wendet sich Gott uns zu und verzeiht und steht ab von seinem grimmigen Zorne, so dass wir nicht zugrunde gehen.

Da sah Gott auf ihr Tun, dass sie sich bekehrten von ihrem bösen Wandel, und Gott erbarmte sich und wandte das Übel ab, das er ihnen angedroht hatte, und ließ es nicht hereinbrechen.
