The Word Am I

The Gospel According to St. John

Literal Standard Version :: World English Bible Catholic

- Chapter 12 -

(Matthew 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; Luke 7:36–50)
1
Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had died, whom He raised out of the dead;
2
they made, therefore, a dinner to Him there, and Martha was ministering, and Lazarus was one of those reclining together with Him;
3
Mary, therefore, having taken a pound of ointment of spikenard, of great price, anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair, and the house was filled from the fragrance of the ointment.
4
Therefore one of His disciplesJudas Iscariot, of Simon, who is about to deliver Him upsays,
5
Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii, and given to the poor?”
6
And he said this, not because he was caring for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and what things were put in he was carrying.
7
Jesus, therefore, said, “Permit her; she has kept it for the day of My embalming,
8
for you always have the poor with yourselves, and you do not always have Me.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

9
Therefore, a great multitude of the Jews knew that He is there, and they came, not only because of Jesus, but that they may also see Lazarus, whom He raised out of the dead;
10
and the chief priests took counsel, that they may also kill Lazarus,
11
because on account of him many of the Jews were going away, and were believing in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

(Zechariah 9:9–13; Matthew 21:1–11; Mark 11:1–11; Luke 19:28–40)
12
On the next day, a great multitude that came to the celebration, having heard that Jesus comes to Jerusalem,
13
took the branches of the palms, and went forth to meet Him, and were crying, “Hosanna! Blessed [is] He who is coming in the Name of the LORDthe King of Israel”;
14
and Jesus having found a young donkey sat on it, according as it is written,
15
Do not fear, daughter of Zion, behold, your King comes, sitting on a colt of a donkey.”
16
And His disciples did not know these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were having been written about Him, and these things they did to Him.
17
The multitude, therefore, who are with Him, were testifying that He called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him out of the dead;
18
because of this the multitude also met Him, because they heard of His having done this sign,
19
therefore the Pharisees said among themselves, “You see that you do not gain anything, behold, the world went after Him.”

Jesus Predicts His Death

20
And there were certain Greeks out of those coming up that they may worship in the celebration,
21
these then came near to Philip, who [is] from Bethsaida of Galilee, and were asking him, saying, “Lord, we wish to see Jesus”;
22
Philip comes and tells Andrew, and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
23
And Jesus responded to them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man may be glorified;
24
truly, truly, I say to you, if the grain of the wheat, having fallen to the earth, may not die, itself remains alone; and if it may die, it bears much fruit;
25
he who is cherishing his life will lose it, and he who is hating his life in this world will keep it to continuous life;
26
if anyone may minister to Me, let him follow Me, and where I am, there My servant will be also; and if anyone may minister to Methe Father will honor him.
27
Now My soul has been troubled; and what will I sayFather, save Me from this hour? But because of this I came to this hour;
28
Father, glorify Your Name.” Therefore there came a voice out of Heaven, “I both glorified, and again I will glorify [it]”;
29
the multitude, therefore, having stood and heard, were saying that there has been thunder; others said, “A messenger has spoken to Him.”
30
Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come because of Me, but because of you;
31
now is a judgment of this world, now will the ruler of this world be cast forth;
32
and I, if I may be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.”
33
And this He said signifying by what death He was about to die;
34
the multitude answered Him, “We heard that the Christ remains out of the Lawthroughout the age; and how do You say that it is required that the Son of Man be lifted up? Who is thisthe Son of Man?”
35
Therefore Jesus said to them, “Yet a short time is the light with you; walk while you have the light, that darkness may not overtake you; and he who is walking in the darkness has not known where he goes;
36
while you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” Jesus spoke these things, and having gone away, He was hid from them,

Belief and Unbelief

37
yet He, having done so many signs before them, they were not believing in Him,
38
that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said, “LORD, who gave credence to our report? And the arm of the LORDto whom was it revealed?”
39
Because of this they were not able to believe, that again Isaiah said,
40
He has blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they might not see with the eyes, and understand with the heart, and turn, and I might heal them”;
41
Isaiah said these things when he saw His glory, and spoke of Him.
42
Still, however, out of the rulers many also believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing, that they might not be put out of the synagogue,
43
for they loved the glory of men more than the glory of God.
44
And Jesus cried and said, “He who is believing in Me, does not believe in Me, but in Him who sent Me;
45
and He who is beholding Me, beholds Him who sent Me;
46
Ilight to the worldhave come, that everyone who is believing in Me may not remain in the darkness;
47
and if anyone may hear My sayings, and not believe, I do not judge him, for I did not come that I might judge the world, but that I might save the world.
48
He who is rejecting Me, and not receiving My sayings, has one who is judging him, the word that I spoke, that will judge him in the last day,
49
because I did not speak from Myself, but the Father who sent Me, He gave Me a command, what I may say, and what I may speak,
50
and I have known that His command is continuous life; what, therefore, I speak, according as the Father has said to Me, so I speak.”
(Matthew 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; Luke 7:36–50)
1
Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.
2
So they made him a supper there. Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with him.
3
Therefore Mary took a pound (a) of ointment of pure nard, very precious, and anointed Jesusfeet and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.
4
Then Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, one of his disciples, who would betray him, said,
5
Why wasn’t this ointment sold for three hundred denarii (b) and given to the poor?”
6
Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money box, used to steal what was put into it.
7
But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She has kept this for the day of my burial.
8
For you always have the poor with you, but you don’t always have me.”

The Plot to Kill Lazarus

9
A large crowd therefore of the Jews learned that he was there; and they came, not for Jesussake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.
10
But the chief priests conspired to put Lazarus to death also,
11
because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.

The Triumphal Entry

(Zechariah 9:9–13; Matthew 21:1–11; Mark 11:1–11; Luke 19:28–40)
12
On the next day a great multitude had come to the feast. When they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13
they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet him, and cried out, “Hosanna!(c) Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,(d) the King of Israel!”
14
Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it. As it is written,
15
“Don’t be afraid, daughter of Zion. Behold, your King comes, sitting on a donkey’s colt.”(e)
16
His disciples didn’t understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him, and that they had done these things to him.
17
The multitude therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead was testifying about it.
18
For this cause also the multitude went and met him, because they heard that he had done this sign.
19
The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “See how you accomplish nothing. Behold, the world has gone after him.”

Jesus Predicts His Death

20
Now there were certain Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast.
21
Therefore, these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we want to see Jesus.”
22
Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn, Andrew came with Philip, and they told Jesus.
23
Jesus answered them, “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
24
Most certainly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.
25
He who loves his life will lose it. He who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.
26
If anyone serves me, let him follow me. Where I am, there my servant will also be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
27
“Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this time’? But I came to this time for this cause.
28
Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came out of the sky, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
29
Therefore the multitude who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”
30
Jesus answered, “This voice hasn’t come for my sake, but for your sakes.
31
Now is the judgment of this world. Now the prince of this world will be cast out.
32
And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
33
But he said this, signifying by what kind of death he should die.
34
The multitude answered him, “We have heard out of the law that the Christ remains forever.(f) How do you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?”
35
Jesus therefore said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness doesn’t overtake you. He who walks in the darkness doesn’t know where he is going.
36
While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become children of light.” Jesus said these things, and he departed and hid himself from them.

Belief and Unbelief

37
But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they didn’t believe in him,
38
that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:Lord, who has believed our report? To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”(g)
39
For this cause they couldn’t believe, for Isaiah said again:
40
He has blinded their eyes and he hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes, and perceive with their heart, and would turn, and I would heal them.”(h)
41
Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory, and spoke of him. (i)
42
Nevertheless, even many of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they didn’t confess it, so that they wouldn’t be put out of the synagogue,
43
for they loved men’s praise more than God’s praise.
44
Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me, but in him who sent me.
45
He who sees me sees him who sent me.
46
I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in the darkness.
47
If anyone listens to my sayings and doesn’t believe, I don’t judge him. For I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48
He who rejects me, and doesn’t receive my sayings, has one who judges him. The word that I spoke will judge him in the last day.
49
For I spoke not from myself, but the Father who sent me gave me a commandment, what I should say and what I should speak.
50
I know that his commandment is eternal life. The things therefore which I speak, even as the Father has said to me, so I speak.”
