- Kapitel 22 -

Then Joshua calls for the Reubenite, and for the Gadite, and for the half-tribe of Manasseh,

and says to them, “You have kept the whole of that which Moses, servant of YHWH, commanded you, and you listen to my voice, to all that I have commanded you;

you have not left your brothers these many days to this day, and have kept the charge—the command of your God YHWH.

And now, your God YHWH has given rest to your brothers, as He spoke to them; and now, turn, and go for yourselves to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Moses, servant of YHWH, has given to you beyond the Jordan.

Only, be very watchful to do the command and the Law which Moses, servant of YHWH, commanded you, to love your God YHWH, and to walk in all His ways, and to keep His commands, and to cleave to Him, and to serve Him, with all your heart, and with all your soul.”

And Joshua blesses them, and sends them away, and they go to their tents.

And to the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses has given, in Bashan, and to its [other] half Joshua has given with their brothers beyond the Jordan westward; and also when Joshua has sent them away to their tents, then he blesses them,

and speaks to them, saying, “Turn back to your tents with great riches, and with very much livestock, with silver, and with gold, and with bronze, and with iron, and with very much raiment; divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.”

The Altar of Witness

And the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, turn back and go from the sons of Israel out of Shiloh, which [is] in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, in which they have possession, according to the command of YHWH, by the hand of Moses;

and they come to the districts of the Jordan, which [are] in the land of Canaan, and the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, build an altar there by the Jordan—a great altar in appearance.

And the sons of Israel hear, saying, “Behold, the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, have built the altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the districts of the Jordan, at the passage of the sons of Israel.”

And the sons of Israel hear, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel is assembled at Shiloh, to go up against them to war;

and the sons of Israel send to the sons of Reuben, and to the sons of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh—to the land of Gilead—Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest,

and ten princes with him, one prince—one prince for a house of a father, for all the tribes of Israel, and each of them a head of a house of their fathers, for the thousands of Israel.

And they come to the sons of Reuben, and to the sons of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and speak with them, saying,

“Thus said all the congregation of YHWH: What [is] this trespass which you have trespassed against the God of Israel, to turn back today from after YHWH, by your building an altar for yourselves, for your rebelling today against YHWH?

Is the iniquity of Peor little to us, from which we have not been cleansed until this day—and the plague is in the congregation of YHWH,

that you turn back today from after YHWH? And it has been [that] you rebel against YHWH today, and tomorrow He is angry against all the congregation of Israel.

And surely, if the land of your possession is unclean, pass over for yourselves to the land of the possession of YHWH, where the Dwelling Place of YHWH has dwelt, and have possession in our midst; and do not rebel against YHWH, and do not rebel against us, by your building an altar for yourselves, besides the altar of our God YHWH.

Did Achan son of Zerah not commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and there was wrath on all the congregation of Israel? And he alone did not expire in his iniquity.”

And the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, answer and speak with the heads of the thousands of Israel:

“The God of gods—YHWH, the God of gods—YHWH, He is knowing, and Israel—he knows, if [we are] in rebellion, and if in trespass against YHWH, do not save us this day!

[If we] are building an altar for ourselves to turn back from after YHWH, and if to cause burnt-offering and present to go up on it, and if to make peace-offerings on it—YHWH Himself requires [it].

And nevertheless, we have done it from fear of [this] thing, saying, Hereafter your sons speak to our sons, saying, And what have you to [do with] YHWH God of Israel?

For YHWH has put a border between us and you, O sons of Reuben, and sons of Gad—Jordan; you have no portion in YHWH—and your sons have caused our sons to cease, not to fear YHWH.

And we say, Now let us prepare to build the altar for ourselves—not for burnt-offering, nor for sacrifice—

but it [is] a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, to do the service of YHWH before Him with our burnt-offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace-offerings, and your sons do not say hereafter to our sons, You have no portion in YHWH.

And we say, And it has been, when they say [so] to us, and to our generations hereafter, that we have said, See the pattern of the altar of YHWH, which our fathers made—not for burnt-offering nor for sacrifice—but it [is] a witness between us and you.

Far be it from us to rebel against YHWH, and to turn back from after YHWH today, to build an altar for burnt-offering, for present, and for sacrifice, apart from the altar of our God YHWH, which [is] before His Dwelling Place.”

And Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, and the heads of the thousands of Israel, who [are] with him, hear the words which the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the sons of Manasseh have spoken, and it is good in their eyes.

And Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest says to the sons of Reuben, and to the sons of Gad, and to the sons of Manasseh, “Today we have known that YHWH [is] in our midst, because you have not committed this trespass against YHWH—then you have delivered the sons of Israel out of the hand of YHWH.”

And Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, turn back from the sons of Reuben, and from the sons of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, to the land of Canaan, to the sons of Israel, and bring them back word;

and the thing is good in the eyes of the sons of Israel, and the sons of Israel bless God, and have not spoken to go up against them to war, to destroy the land which the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, are dwelling in.

And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad proclaim concerning the altar, that, “[It is] a witness between us that YHWH [is] God.”

Die östlichen Stämme kehren in ihr Land zurück

Zu derselben Zeit rief Josue die Rubeniter, die Gaditer, und den halben Stamm Manasse,

und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr habt alles getan, was euch Moses, der Diener des Herrn, geboten hat; und mir seid ihr in allem gehorsam gewesen

und habt eure Brüder diese lange Zeit hindurch, bis auf den heutigen Tag, nicht verlassen, und das Gebot des Herrn, eures Gottes, treu beobachtet.

Weil nun der Herr, euer Gott, euern Brüdern Ruhe und Frieden gegeben hat, wie er verheißen, so kehret zurück und gehet hin in eure Häuser und in das Land eures Besitzes, welches Moses, der Diener des Herrn, euch jenseits des Jordans gegeben hat;

nur beobachtet genau und erfüllet durch die Tat das Gebot und das Gesetz, welches Moses, der Diener des Herrn, euch gegeben hat, dass ihr den Herrn, euern Gott, liebet, und auf allen seinen Wegen wandelt, und ihm aus ganzem Herzen und aus ganzer Seele dienet.

Und Josue segnete sie und entließ sie; und sie kehrten zurück in ihre Hütten.

Dem halben Stamme Manasse hatte Moses seinen Erbbesitz in Basan gegeben; darum gab Josue der anderen Hälfte einen Anteil unter ihren übrigen Brüdern diesseits des Jordans auf der Westseite. Als er sie nun nach Hause entließ, segnete er sie

und sprach zu ihnen: Mit vielem Gut und Reichtum kehrt ihr zu euern Wohnsitzen zurück, mit Silber und Gold, mit Erz und Eisen, und vielen Kleidern; teilet die den Feinden abgenommene Beute mit euern Brüdern.

Und die Söhne Rubens, die Söhne Gads, und der halbe Stamm Manasse kehrten um, und schieden von den Söhnen Israels, von Silo, welches in Chanaan liegt, um nach Galaad, in das Land ihres Besitzes zu ziehen, welches sie dem Befehle des Herrn gemäß durch Moses erhalten hatten.

Ein Altar am Jordan

Als sie nun zu den Hügeln des Jordans im Lande Chanaan gekommen waren, errichteten sie am Jordan einen Altar von ungeheurer Größe.

Als aber die Söhne Israels dies hörten und zuverlässige Boten ihnen berichteten, dass die Söhne Rubens und Gads, und der halbe Stamm Manasse einen Altar errichtet hatten, im Lande Chanaan, bei den Hügeln des Jordans, den Söhnen Israels gegenüber,

versammelten sie sich insgesamt in Silo, um hinaufzuziehen und wider sie zu kämpfen.

Vorher aber sandten sie zu ihnen in das Land Galaad Phinees, den Sohn des Priesters Eleazar,

und zehn Fürsten mit ihm, aus jedem Stamme einen.

Diese kamen zu den Söhnen Rubens und Gads, und zu dem halben Stamme Manasse, in das Land Galaad, und redeten also zu ihnen:

Dies lässt euch das ganze Volk des Herrn entbieten: Was ist das für eine Sünde? Warum habt ihr den Herrn, den Gott Israels, verlassen, indem ihr einen gottesschänderischen Altar erbaut und euch von seinem Dienste abgewendet habt?

Ist es euch zu wenig, dass ihr in Beelphegor gesündigt, und bis auf den heutigen Tag der Schandfleck dieses Verbrechens uns anhaftet, und viele aus dem Volke gefallen sind?

Ihr habt heute den Herrn verlassen, und morgen wird sein Zorn gegen das gesamte Israel entbrennen.

Wenn ihr das Land, welches ihr als Besitz erhalten habt, für unrein haltet, so ziehet herüber in das Land, in dem das Zelt des Herrn ist, und nehmet unter uns Wohnung; nur werdet nicht vor dem Herrn und von der Gemeinschaft mit uns abtrünnig, indem ihr euch einen Altar errichtet außer dem Altare des Herrn, unseres Gottes.

Ist nicht, als Achan, der Sohn Zares, das Gebot des Herrn übertrat, der Zorn Gottes über das ganze Volk Israel hereingebrochen? Und das war nur ein einziger Mann; aber wäre er doch allein umgekommen um seiner Missetat willen!

Da antworteten die Söhne Rubens und Gads, und der halbe Stamm Manasse dem Fürsten der Gesandtschaft Israels:

Gott, der Starke, der Herr, ja, Gott, der Starke, der Herr, er weiß es, und Israel soll es auch wissen: wenn wir in sündhafter Absicht diesen Altar errichtet haben, so soll er uns nicht behüten, sondern sogleich strafen;

und wenn wir es in der Absicht getan, um Brandopfer und Speiseopfer und Friedopfer darauf darzubringen, so möge er es ahnden und uns richten;

und nicht vielmehr in dem Gedanken und der Verabredung, dass wir sprachen: Bald werden eure Söhne zu unsern Söhnen sagen: Was geht euch der Herr, der Gott Israels, an?

Der Herr hat zwischen uns und euch, ihr Söhne Rubens und ihr Söhne Gads, den Fluss Jordan als Grenze gesetzt, und darum habt ihr keinen Teil an dem Herrn! Und auf diesen Grund hin könnten eure Söhne unsere Söhne vom Dienste des Herrn abwendig machen. Darum hielten wir es für besser

zu sagen: Wir wollen uns einen Altar bauen, nicht um Brandopfer, noch um andere Opfer darzubringen,

sondern zum Zeugnisse zwischen uns und euch, zwischen unsern Nachkommen und euern Nachkommen, dass wir dem Herrn dienen und das Recht haben, Brandopfer, und Friedopfer, und andere Opfer darzubringen; und dass eure Söhne nicht etwa in kurzem zu unsern Söhnen sagen: Ihr habt keinen Teil an dem Herrn!

Wenn jene es also sagen wollten, so würden sie ihnen antworten: Sehet da den Altar des Herrn, den unsere Väter errichtet haben, nicht zu Brandopfern und Speiseopfern, sondern zum Zeugnisse zwischen uns und euch.

Fern sei von uns der Frevel, von dem Herrn abzufallen und seine Wege zu verlassen, indem wir einen Altar errichten, um Brandopfer, und Speiseopfer, und andere Opfer darzubringen, außer dem Altare des Herrn, unseres Gottes, welcher vor seinem Zelte steht.

Als Phinees, der Priester, und die Fürsten der Gesandtschaft Israels, die bei ihm waren, dies hörten, wurden sie besänftigt und nahmen die Worte der Söhne Rubens und Gads und des halben Stammes Manasse gerne an.

Und Phinees, der Sohn Eleazars, der Priester, sprach zu ihnen: Jetzt erfahren wir, dass der Herr mit uns ist, weil ihr von solcher Sünde fern seid und die Söhne Israels vor der Hand des Herrn bewahrt habt.

Dann kehrte er mit den Fürsten von den Söhnen Rubens und Gads aus dem Lande Galaad, von den Grenzen Chanaans zu den Söhnen Israels zurück und berichtete es ihnen.

Und allen, die sie hörten, gefiel die Kunde. Da lobten die Söhne Israels Gott, und es war keine Rede mehr davon, gegen sie hinaufzuziehen und zu kämpfen und das Land ihres Besitzes zu verheeren.

Und die Söhne Rubens und die Söhne Gads nannten den Altar, den sie erbaut hatten: unser Zeugnis, dass der Herr Gott ist.
