- Kapitel 1 -

(Exodus 33:1–6)

These [are] the words which Moses has spoken to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain opposite Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-Zahab.

[It takes] eleven days [to go] from Horeb, the way of Mount Seir, to Kadesh-Barnea.

And it comes to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month, Moses has spoken to the sons of Israel according to all that YHWH has commanded him concerning them,

after his striking Sihon king of the Amorite who is dwelling in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan who is dwelling in Ashtaroth in Edrei.

Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses has begun to explain this law, saying,

“Our God YHWH has spoken to us in Horeb, saying, For you dwell at this mountain long enough;

turn and journey for yourselves, and go to the mountain of the Amorite, and to all its neighboring places in the plain, in the hill-country, and in the low country, and in the south, and in the haven of the sea, the land of the Canaanite, and of Lebanon, as far as the great river, the Euphrates River;

see, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which YHWH has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their seed after them.

Moses Appoints Leaders

(Exodus 18:13–27)

And I speak to you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you by myself;

your God YHWH has multiplied you, and behold, today you [are] as the stars of the heavens for multitude;

YHWH, God of your fathers, is adding to you, as you [are], one thousand times, and blesses you as He has spoken to you.

How do I bear your pressure, and your burden, and your strife by myself?

Provide wise and understanding men for yourselves that are known to your tribes, and I set them for your heads;

and you answer me and say, The thing which you have spoken [is] good to do.

And I take the heads of your tribes, wise men that are known, and I appoint them [as] heads over you, princes of thousands, and princes of hundreds, and princes of fifties, and princes of tens, and authorities for your tribes.

And I command your judges at that time, saying, Listen between your brothers—then you have judged [in] righteousness between a man, and his brother, and his sojourner;

you do not discern faces in judgment; you hear the little as well as the great; you are not afraid of the face of any, for the judgment is God’s, and the thing which is too hard for you, you bring near to me, and I have heard it.

And I command you at that time all the things which you do.

Twelve Spies Sent Out

(Numbers 13:1–33)

And we journey from Horeb, and go [through] all that great and fearful wilderness which you have seen, the way of the hill-country of the Amorite, as our God YHWH has commanded us, and we come to Kadesh-Barnea.

And I say to you, You have come to the hill-country of the Amorite, which our God YHWH is giving to us;

see, your God YHWH has set the land before you; go up, possess, as YHWH, God of your fathers, has spoken to you; do not fear, nor be frightened.

And you come near to me, all of you, and say, Let us send men before us, and they search the land for us, and they bring us back word [concerning] the way in which we go up into it, and the cities to which we come in;

and the thing is good in my eyes, and I take twelve men from you, one man for the tribe.

And they turn and go up to the hill-country, and come to the Valley of Eshcol, and spy it out,

and they take in their hand from the fruit of the land, and bring [it] down to us, and bring us back word, and say, The land is good which our God YHWH is giving to us.

Israel’s Rebellion

(Numbers 14:1–12)

And you have not been willing to go up, and you provoke the mouth of your God YHWH,

and murmur in your tents, and say, In YHWH’s hating us He has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to give us into the hand of the Amorite—to destroy us;

to where are we going up? Our brothers have melted our heart, saying, [The] people [are] greater and taller than we; [the] cities [are] great and fortified up to the heavens, and we have also seen sons of Anakim there.

And I say to you, Do not be terrified, nor be afraid of them;

your God YHWH, who is going before you—He fights for you, according to all that He has done with you in Egypt before your eyes,

and in the wilderness where you have seen that your God YHWH has carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way which you have gone until your coming to this place.

And in this thing you are not steadfast in your God YHWH,

who is going before you in the way to search out for you a place for your encamping, in fire by night, to show you in the way in which you go, and in a cloud by day.

Israel’s Penalty

(Numbers 14:20–35)

And YHWH hears the voice of your words, and is angry, and swears, saying,

Not one of these men of this evil generation sees the good land which I have sworn to give to your fathers,

except Caleb son of Jephunneh—he sees it, and to him I give the land on which he has trodden, and to his sons, because that he has been fully after YHWH.

Moreover, YHWH has been angry with me for your sake, saying, Indeed, you do not go in there;

Joshua son of Nun, who is standing before you, he goes in there; strengthen him, for he causes Israel to inherit [it].

And your infants, of whom you have said, They are for a prey, and your sons who today have not known good and evil, they go in there, and I give it to them, and they possess it;

but you, turn and journey for yourselves toward the wilderness, the way of the Red Sea.

The Defeat at Hormah

(Numbers 14:40–45)

And you answer and say to me, We have sinned against YHWH; we go up and we have fought, according to all that which our God YHWH has commanded us; and you each gird on his weapons of war, and you are ready to go up into the hill-country;

and YHWH says to me, Say to them, You do not go up, nor fight, for I am not in your midst, and you are not struck before your enemies.

And I speak to you, and you have not listened, and provoke the mouth of YHWH, and act proudly, and go up into the hill-country;

and the Amorite who is dwelling in that hill-country comes out to meet you, and they pursue you as the bees do, and strike you in Seir, even to Hormah.

And you return and weep before YHWH, and YHWH has not listened to your voice, nor has He given ear to you;

and you dwell in Kadesh [for] many days, according to the days which you had dwelt.”

Der frühere Befehl zum Einzug nach Kanaan

(2. Mose 33,1-6)

Dies sind die Worte, welche Moses zu ganz Israel gesprochen hat jenseits des Jordans in der Wüstenebene, dem roten Meere gegenüber, zwischen Pharan, und Thophel, und Laban, und Haseroth, wo sehr viel Gold ist;

elf Tagereisen vom Horeb auf dem Wege nach dem Gebirge Seir bis Kadesbarne.

Im vierzigsten Jahre, im elften Monat, am ersten Tage des Monats, verkündete Moses den Söhnen Israels alles, was ihm der Herr befohlen hatte, ihnen zu sagen,

nachdem er Sehon, den König der Amorrhiter, der in Hesebon wohnte, geschlagen, und Og, den König von Basan, welcher in Astaroth und Edrai wohnte,

jenseits des Jordans im Lande Moab. Da begann Moses das Gesetz auszulegen und sprach:

Der Herr, unser Gott, hat zu uns am Horeb also gesprochen: Ihr habt genug an diesem Berge verweilt;

wendet euch und ziehet nach dem Gebirge der Amorrhiter, und in seine ganze Umgebung, die Ebene, das Bergland, die Niederungen gegen Süden, und am Gestade des Meeres, nach dem Lande der Chananiter und dem Libanon bis an den großen Strom Euphrat.

Sehet, sprach er, ich habe es euch übergeben; ziehet hinein und nehmet dasselbe in Besitz, das der Herr euren Vätern Abraham, Isaak und Jakob geschworen hat, ihnen und ihren Nachkommen nach ihnen zu geben.

Ernennung von Stammesführern

(2. Mose 18,13-27)

Und ich sprach zu euch in jener Zeit:

Ich allein kann nicht die Sorge für euch auf mich nehmen, denn der Herr, euer Gott, hat euch gemehrt, und ihr seid jetzt zahlreich, wie die Sterne des Himmels.

(Möge der Herr, der Gott eurer Väter, zu dieser Menge noch viele Tausende hinzufügen und euch segnen, wie er gesprochen hat.)

Ich allein kann eure Geschäfte und Beschwerden und Streitigkeiten nicht auf mich nehmen.

Stellet aus eurer Mitte weise und verständige Männer auf, deren Wandel bei euren Stämmen bewährt ist, dass ich sie zu Fürsten über euch setze.

Da habt ihr mir geantwortet: Gut ist die Sache, welche du tun willst.

Und ich nahm aus euren Stämmen weise und angesehene Männer und machte sie zu Fürsten, zu Obersten über tausend, über hundert, über fünfzig, und über zehn, dass sie euch in allem belehrten.

Und ich befahl ihnen und sprach: Höret sie, und richtet, wie es recht ist, es sei ein Einheimischer oder ein Fremder.

Kein Unterschied des Standes soll gelten; höret so den Geringen wie den Großen, und sehet niemandes Person an, denn es ist Gottes Gericht. Scheint euch aber etwas schwierig, so bringt es vor mich, und ich will es hören.

Und ich gebot alles, was ihr tun solltet.

Israels Weigerung, das Land zu betreten

(4. Mose 13,1-33)

Sodann brachen wir vom Horeb auf und zogen durch die fürchterliche und große Wüste, die ihr gesehen habt, des Weges nach dem Amorrhitergebirge, so wie uns der Herr, unser Gott, geboten. Und da wir nach Kadesbarne kamen,

sprach ich zu euch: Ihr seid an das Gebirge der Amorrhiter gekommen, das der Herr, unser Gott, uns geben wird.

Siehe da, das Land, welches der Herr, dein Gott, dir gibt; ziehe hinauf und nimm es in Besitz, wie der Herr, unser Gott, zu deinen Vätern gesprochen hat; fürchte dich nicht und sei unverzagt!

Da tratet ihr alle zu mir und sprachet: Lasset uns Männer hinsenden, welche das Land erforschen und uns berichten mögen, auf welchem Wege wir hinaufziehen und gegen welche Städte wir vorrücken sollen.

Und da mir der Vorschlag gefiel, sandte ich zwölf Männer von euch aus, je einen aus jedem Stamme.

Diese brachen auf und zogen in das Gebirge, kamen bis zum Traubental, und erforschten das Land,

nahmen einige von seinen Früchten, um seine Fruchtbarkeit zu zeigen, und brachten sie uns, und sprachen: Das Land, das der Herr, unser Gott, uns geben will, ist gut.

(4. Mose 14,1-12)

Aber ihr wolltet nicht hinaufziehen, sondern gegen das Wort des Herrn, unsers Gottes, ungläubig,

murrtet ihr in euren Zelten und sprachet: Der Herr hasst uns, darum hat er uns aus dem Lande Ägypten geführt, um uns in die Hand der Amorrhiter zu übergeben und zu vernichten.

Wohin sollen wir ziehen? Die Botschafter haben unser Herz verzagt gemacht, indem sie sprachen: Das Volk ist überaus zahlreich und überragt uns an Gestalt; die Städte sind groß und bis zum Himmel hoch befestigt, und wir sahen dort Enakssöhne.

Da sprach ich zu euch: Zaget nicht und fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen!

Gott, der Herr, der euer Führer ist, wird selbst für euch streiten, wie er in Ägypten vor aller Augen getan hat.

Und in der Wüste (du hast es selbst gesehen) hat dich der Herr, dein Gott, getragen, wie ein Mann seinen kleinen Sohn zu tragen pflegt, auf dem ganzen Wege, den ihr durchzogen habt, bis ihr an diesen Ort kamet.

Aber nicht einmal hierauf hin habt ihr dem Herrn, euerm Gott, geglaubt,

der euch voranging auf dem Wege, und die Orte auswählte, an denen ihr euch lagern solltet, des Nachts euch den Weg durch das Feuer zeigend, und des Tages durch die Wolkensäule.

Die Strafe für Israels Rebellion

(4. Mose 14,20-35)

Und als der Herr eure lauten Reden hörte, zürnte er, und schwur, und sprach:

Kein einziger von den Männern dieses argen Geschlechtes soll das gute Land schauen, welches ich euern Vätern mit einem Eidschwure verheißen habe,

ausgenommen Kaleb, dem Sohn Jephones; denn er soll es schauen, und ihm und seinen Söhnen will ich das Land geben, das er betreten hat, weil er dem Herrn gehorsam gewesen ist.

Nicht darf sein Unwille über das Volk befremdlich erscheinen, da der Herr auch über mich euretwegen zürnte und sprach: Auch du sollst nicht dorthin gelangen,

sondern Josue, der Sohn Nuns, dein Diener, er soll statt deiner in dasselbe einziehen; diesen belehre und ermutige, denn er soll das Land durch das Los an Israel austeilen.

Eure Kinder, von denen ihr sagtet, sie würden gefangen weggeführt werden, und eure Söhne, welche heute noch nicht den Unterschied zwischen gut und böse kennen, werden in dasselbe gelangen; und ihnen werde ich das Los geben, und sie sollen es in Besitz nehmen.

Ihr aber wendet euch um und brechet nach der Wüste auf, des Weges nach dem roten Meere zu.

(4. Mose 14,40-45)

Da habt ihr mir geantwortet: Wir haben wider den Herrn gesündigt; wir wollen hinaufziehen und kämpfen, wie der Herr, unser Gott, befohlen hat. Und da ihr gewaffnet auf das Gebirge zoget,

sprach der Herr zu mir: Sage ihnen: Ziehet nicht hinauf und kämpfet nicht, denn ich bin nicht mit euch; auf dass ihr nicht vor euern Feinden erlieget.

Ich habe es euch gesagt, aber ihr habt nicht gehört, sondern waret widerspenstig gegen den Befehl des Herrn und zoget in stolzer Vermessenheit auf das Gebirge.

Da zogen die Amorrhiter, die im Gebirge wohnten, aus, und rückten euch entgegen, und verfolgten euch, wie die Bienen zu verfolgen pflegen, und schlugen euch von Seir nach Horma.

Und da ihr zurückkehrtet und vor dem Herrn weintet, hörte er nicht auf euch und wollte eurer Stimme nicht Gehör leihen.

So bliebet ihr denn in Kadesbarne lange Zeit.
