- Kapitel 1 -

(1 Timothy 5:3–16)

Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Beth–lehem–judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.(a)

And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth–lehem–judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.(b)

And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.

And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.

And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.

Ruth’s Loyalty to Naomi

Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the Lord had visited his people in giving them bread.

Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.

And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.

The Lord grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.

And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;(c)

Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord is gone out against me.(d)

And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.

And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.

And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:(f)

Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.(g)

The Return to Bethlehem

So they two went until they came to Beth–lehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth–lehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi?

And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.(h)

I went out full, and the Lord hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the Lord hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Beth–lehem in the beginning of barley harvest.

Elimelechs Familie geht nach Moab

(1. Timotheus 5,3-16)

In den Tagen eines Richters, als die Richter an der Spitze standen, entstand eine Hungersnot im Lande. Da zog ein Mann von Bethlehem in Juda fort, um als Fremdling im Lande Moab mit seinem Weibe und seinen zwei Söhnen Wohnung zu nehmen.

Er hieß Elimelech, und sein Weib Noemi, und seine beiden Söhne, der eine Mahalon und der andere Chelion, Ephrathiter aus Bethlehem in Juda. Und sie zogen in das Land Moab und weilten daselbst.

Da starb Elimelech, der Mann Noemis, und sie blieb mit ihren Söhnen zurück.

Diese nahmen sich moabitische Frauen, von denen die eine Orpha, die andere aber Ruth hieß. Und sie blieben daselbst zehn Jahre.

Und beide starben, Mahalon nämlich und Chelion; und die Frau blieb zurück, des Mannes und der beiden Söhne beraubt.

Naomi kehrt mit Rut zurück

Da machte sie sich mit ihren beiden Schwiegertöchtern auf, um aus dem Lande Moab in ihr Vaterland zurückzukehren; denn sie hatte gehört, dass der Herr sein Volk wieder angesehen und ihnen Speise gegeben habe.

So zog sie denn mit ihren beiden Schwiegertöchtern von dem Orte, wo sie als Fremde geweilt, fort. Als sie nun schon auf dem Rückwege in das Land Juda war,

sprach sie zu diesen: Gehet heim in das Haus eurer Mutter; der Herr möge euch Barmherzigkeit erweisen, wie ihr sie den Verstorbenen und mir erwiesen habt!

Er gebe euch, dass ihr eine Ruhestätte in dem Hause der Männer findet, die ihr erhalten werdet. Sodann küsste sie dieselben. Sie aber erhoben ihre Stimme und fingen an zu weinen

und sprachen: Wir werden mit dir zu deinem Volke gehen!

Jene antwortete ihnen: Kehret um, meine Töchter! Warum sollt ihr mit mir gehen? Habe ich etwa noch Söhne in meinem Schoße, dass ihr Männer von mir hoffen könntet?

Kehret um, meine Töchter, und gehet hin; denn ich bin nun schon sehr alt und nicht mehr für das Band der Ehe geeignet. Und könnte ich auch noch in dieser Nacht empfangen und Söhne gebären,

so würdet ihr doch alt werden, ehe ihr heiratet, wenn ihr warten wolltet, bis sie groß und mannbar geworden sind. Nicht doch, meine Töchter! denn eure Bedrängnis drückt mich noch mehr und die Hand des Herrn ist wider mich ausgegangen!

Da erhoben sie ihre Stimme und begannen wieder zu weinen. Und Orpha küsste ihre Schwiegermutter und kehrte um; Ruth aber blieb bei ihrer Schwiegermutter.

Noemi sprach zu ihr: Siehe, deine Verwandte ist zu ihrem Volke und zu ihren Göttern zurückgekehrt, gehe mit ihr!

Sie aber antwortete: Sei mir nicht entgegen, dass ich dich verlassen und fortgeben muss; denn wo du immer hingehst, gehe ich hin, und wo du bleibst, bleibe auch ich. Dein Volk ist mein Volk und dein Gott ist mein Gott!

Das Land, das dich im Tode aufnimmt, in diesem will ich sterben, und dort soll der Ort meines Begräbnisses sein. Dies und das noch dazu möge mir der Herr tun, wenn nicht der Tod allein mich von dir scheidet!

Da also Noemi sah, dass Ruth fest entschlossen war, mit ihr zu ziehen, wollte sie sich nicht mehr widersetzen und sie nicht ferner zur Rückkehr zu den Ihrigen bereden.

So zogen sie mitsammen fort und kamen nach Bethlehem. Als sie aber in die Stadt gekommen waren, verbreitete sich alsbald bei allen die Kunde davon, und die Frauen sprachen: Das ist die Noemi!

Sie sprach zu ihnen: Nennet mich nicht Noemi (das ist die Schöne), sondern nennet mich Mara (d. i. die Betrübte); denn der Allmächtige hat mich mit vieler Betrübnis erfüllt.

Voll zog ich aus, und leer hat mich der Herr zurückgeführt. Warum nennt ihr mich also Noemi, da der Herr mich gedemütigt und der Allmächtige mich betrübt hat?

So kam Noemi mit Ruth, der Moabitin, ihrer Schwiegertochter, aus dem Lande, wo sie als Fremde geweilt, und kehrte nach Bethlehem zurück, um die Zeit, als eben die Gerstenernte begann.
