Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:(a)

Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.(b)

The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.

The Lord is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.

Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.

Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:

Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.

Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the Lord be upon you: we bless you in the name of the Lord .

Stufengesang. Oftmals haben sie mich bedrängt von meiner Jugend an, so spreche Israel,

oftmals haben sie mich bedrängt von meiner Jugend an, doch nicht haben sie mich überwältigt.

Auf meinem Rücken schmiedeten die Sünder, trieben ihre Bosheit lange fort;

aber der Herr, der Gerechte, zerbrach der Sünder Nacken.

Beschämt müssen werden und zurückweichen alle, die Sion hassen.

Sie mögen werden wie das Gras auf den Dächern, das welkt, ehe man es noch ausreißt,

mit dem der Schnitter seine Hand nicht füllt noch der Garbenbinder seinen Schoß.

Und die Vorübergehenden sprechen nicht: Der Segen des Herrn sei über euch, wir segnen euch im Namen des Herrn.
