- Kapitel 4 -

(Hebrews 11:4)

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord .(a)

And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.(b)

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord .(d)

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:(e)

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.(f)

And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?

And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.(h)

And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;

When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

And Cain said unto the Lord , My punishment is greater than I can bear.(i)

Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord , and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

The Descendants of Cain

And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.(j)

And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.(k)

And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.

And Zillah, she also bare Tubal–cain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal–cain was Naamah.(l)

And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.(m)

If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

Seth and Enosh

And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.(o)

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord .(p)

Kain ermordet Abel

(Hebräer 11,4)

Adam aber erkannte sein Weib Heva, und sie empfing und gebar den Kain, und sprach: Ich habe durch Gott einen Menschen erhalten.

Und abermals gebar sie, seinen Bruder Abel. Abel aber war ein Schafhirt, und Kain ein Ackerbauer.

Es begab sich aber nach vielen Tagen, dass Kain von den Früchten der Erde dem Herrn Opfergaben darbrachte.

Abel aber brachte gleichfalls Opfer dar, von den Erstlingen seiner Herde und von ihrem Fette. Da sah der Herr auf Abel und sein Opfer;

aber auf Kain und sein Opfer sah er nicht; und Kain ergrimmte so heftig, dass sein Angesicht einfiel.

Da sprach der Herr zu ihm: Warum bist du ergrimmt, und warum ist dein Angesicht eingefallen?

Wirst du nicht, wenn du Gutes tust, Lohn empfangen? Tuest du aber Böses, wird nicht sogleich die Sünde vor der Tür sein? Aber ihre Begier soll unter dir sein, und du sollst über sie herrschen.

Und Kain sagte zu Abel, seinem Bruder: Lass uns hinaus gehen! Als sie nun auf dem Felde waren, erhob sich Kain gegen seinen Bruder Abel und erschlug ihn.

Da sprach der Herr zu Kain: Wo ist dein Bruder Abel? Er aber antwortete: Ich weiß es nicht! Bin ich etwa der Hüter meines Bruders?

Und er sprach zu ihm: Was hast du getan? Die Stimme des Blutes deines Bruders schreit auf zu mir von der Erde.

So sei nun verflucht auf der Erde, die ihren Mund aufgetan und deines Bruders Blut von deiner Hand empfangen hat.

Wenn du sie bebaust, soll sie dir ihre Früchte nicht geben; unstet und flüchtig sollst du auf Erden sein!

Und Kain sprach zu dem Herrn: Meine Missetat ist zu groß, als dass ich Verzeihung verdiente!

Siehe, du treibst mich heute aus dem Lande, und ich muss mich vor deinem Angesichte verbergen, und werde unstet und flüchtig sein auf Erden. Jeder also, der mich findet, wird mich töten!

Da sprach der Herr zu ihm: Das soll keineswegs geschehen, sondern wer immer Kain tötet, soll siebenfach gestraft werden. Und der Herr gab Kain ein Zeichen, dass niemand ihn töte, der ihn irgend fände.

Die Familie von Kain

Da zog Kain weg von dem Angesichte des Herrn und nahm im Lande ostwärts von Eden seinen Aufenthalt als Flüchtling.

Und Kain erkannte sein Weib, und sie empfing und gebar Henoch. Und er baute eine Stadt und nannte sie nach dem Namen seines Sohnes, Henoch.

Henoch aber zeugte Irad, Irad zeugte Maviael, Maviael zeugte Mathusael, und Mathusael zeugte Lamech.

Dieser nahm sich zwei Frauen: der Name der einen war Ada, der Name der anderen Sella.

Und Ada gebar Jabel; dieser wurde der Vater der Zeltbewohner und der Hirten.

Sein Bruder aber hieß Jubal; dieser ward der Vater derer, welche die Laute und die Flöte spielen.

Und Sella gebar den Tubalkain, der allerlei Erz und Eisenwerk hämmerte und schmiedete. Die Schwester Tubalkains aber war Noema.

Und es sprach Lamech zu seinen Weibern Ada und Sella. Höret meine Stimme, ihr Weiber Lamechs! Merket auf meine Rede: ich habe einen Mann erschlagen für meine Wunde, einen Jüngling für meine Beule.

Siebenfach wird Kain gerächt werden, Lamech aber siebenzigmal siebenmal.

Ein neuer Sohn

Und Adam erkannte abermals sein Weib, und sie gebar einen Sohn und nannte seinen Namen Seth, indem sie sprach: Es hat mir Gott eine andere Nachkommenschaft gesetzt an Stelle Abels, den Kain erschlagen hat.

Aber auch Seth ward ein Sohn geboren, den er Enos nannte. Dieser fing an, den Namen des Herrn anzurufen.
