- Kapitel 8 -

Thus hath the Lord God shewed vnto me, and behold, a basket of summer fruite.

And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I sayd, A basket of sommer fruite. Then sayd the Lord vnto me, The ende is come vpon my people of Israel, I wil passe by them no more.

And the songs of the Temple shalbe howlings in that day, saith the Lord God: many dead bodies shalbe in euery place: they shall cast them forth with silence.

Heare this, O yee that swallowe vp the poore, that ye may make the needie of the lande to fayle,

Saying, When will the newe moneth bee gone, that we may sell corne? and the Sabbath, that we may set forth wheate, and make the Ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifie the weights by deceit?

That we may buy the poore for siluer, and the needie for shooes: yea, and sell the refuse of the wheate.

The Lord hath sworne by the excellencie of Iaakob, Surely I will neuer forget any of their workes.

Shall not the lande tremble for this, and euery one mourne, that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise vp wholy as a flood, and it shall bee cast out, and drowned as by the flood of Egypt.

And in that day, saith the Lord God, I will euen cause the sunne to go downe at noone: and I will darken the earth in the cleare day.

And I will turne your feastes into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation: and I will bring sackcloth vpon all loynes, and baldnes vpon euery head: and I will make it as the mourning of an onely sonne, and the ende thereof as a bitter day.

Beholde, the dayes come, sayeth the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the lande, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the word of the Lord.

And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the North euen vnto the East shall they run to and from to seeke the worde of the Lord, and shall not finde it.

In that day shall the faire virgines and the yong men perish for thirst.

They that sweare by the sinne of Samaria, and that say, Thy God, O Dan, liueth, and the maner of Beer-sheba liueth, euen they shall fall, and neuer rise vp againe.

Vision von der Sommerfrucht

Folgendes ließ der Herr, Gott, mich schauen: Siehe, da war ein Obsthaken.

Und er sprach: Was siehst du, Amos? Ich sprach: Einen Obsthaken. Da sprach der Herr zu mir: Es kommt das Ende über mein Volk Israel, nicht länger mehr will ich seiner schonen!

Es sollen die Türangeln des Tempels an jenem Tage ächzen, spricht der Herr, Gott, viele werden dahinsterben, allenthalben wird sich Stille verbreiten.

Höret dies, ihr, die ihr die Armen niedertretet und die Dürftigen des Landes verschmachten lasset,

indem ihr sprecht: Wann geht der Neumond vorüber, dass wir unsere Waren verkaufen, und der Sabbat, dass wir die Speicher auftun? dass wir das Maß vermindern und das Gewicht vergrößern und falsche Waage unterschieben können?

dass wir die Dürftigen um Geld und die Armen um ein Paar Schuhe an uns bringen und den Abfall vom Korn verkaufen?

Geschworen hat der Herr wider Jakobs Hoffart: Fürwahr! Nimmer werde ich aller ihrer Taten vergessen.

Soll darob nicht die Erde erzittern, nicht alle ihre Bewohner trauern? Es wird sich erheben wie der Strom zumal, hinausstürzen und abfließen wie der Strom Ägyptens.

An jenem Tage, spricht der Herr, Gott, wird die Sonne am Mittage untergehen und am hellen tage werde ich Finsternis senden über die Erde.

Und ich werde eure Feste in Trauer wandeln und alle eure Lieder in Wehklage, Trauerkleid werde ich über alle eure Rücken bringen und über alle Häupter Kahlheit, ich werde das Land in leid versetzen wie bei der Trauer um den einzigen Sohn und sein Ende einem Tage der Bitterkeit gleichmachen.

Sehet, es kommen die Tage, spricht der Herr, da ich Hunger über das Land senden werde; nicht Hunger nach Brot noch Durst nach Wasser, sondern Hunger, das Wort des Herrn zu hören.

Da soll es sie von einem Meere zum andern treiben und von Nord bis nach Ost; sie werden umherschweifen, das Wort des Herrn zu suchen, aber sie sollen es nicht finden.

An jenem Tag werden die schönen Jungfrauen und die Jünglinge vor Durst verschmachten,

sie, welche jetzt bei der Schuld Samarias schwören und sprechen: So wahr dein Gott lebt, Dan, bei dem Wege nach Bersabee! sie werden stürzen und nicht wieder auferstehen.
