The First Book of Samuel

- Kapitel 9 -

There was nowe a man of Beniamin, mightie in power named Kish, the sonne of Abiel, the sonne of Zeror, the sonne of Bechorath, the sonne of Aphiah, the sonne of a man of Iemini.

And he had a sonne called Saul, a goodly yong man and a faire: so that among the children of Israel there was none goodlier then he: from the shoulders vpwarde he was hier then any of the people.

And the asses of Kish Sauls father were lost: therefore Kish said to Saul his sonne, Take nowe one of the seruants with thee, and arise, goe, and seeke the asses.

So he passed through mount Ephraim, and went through the lande of Shalishah, but they found them not. Then they went through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: he went also through ye land of Iemini, but they found the not.

When they came to the lande of Zuph, Saul saide vnto his seruant that was with him, Come and let vs returne, lest my father leaue the care of asses, and take thought for vs.

And he said vnto him, Behold nowe, in this citie is a man of God, and he is an honorable man: all that he saith commeth to passe: let vs nowe goe thither, if so be that he can shewe vs what way we may goe.

Then saide Saul to his seruant, Well then, let vs goe: but what shall we bring vnto the man? For the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is no present to bring to the man of God: what haue we?

And the seruant answered Saul againe, and said, Beholde, I haue founde about me the fourth part of a shekell of siluer: that will I giue the man of God, to tell vs our way.

(Beforetime in Israel when a man went to seeke an answere of God, thus he spake, Come, and let vs goe to the Seer: for he that is called nowe a Prophet, was in the olde time called a Seer)

Then saide Saul to his seruant, Well saide, come, let vs goe: so they went into the citie where the man of God was.

And as they were going vp the hie way to the citie, they found maydes that came out to draw water, and said vnto them, Is there here a Seer?

And they answered them, and said, Yea: loe, he is before you: make haste nowe, for he came this day to the citie: for there is an offering of the people this day in the hie place.

When ye shall come into the citie, ye shall finde him straightway yet he come vp to the hie place to eate: for the people will not eate vntill he come, because he will blesse the sacrifice: and then eate they that be bidden to the feast: nowe therefore goe vp: for euen now shall ye find him.

Then they went vp into the citie, and when they were come into the middes of the citie, Samuel came out against them, to goe vp to the hie place.

But the Lord had reueiled to Samuel secretly (a day before Saul came) saying,

To morow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Beniamin: him shalt thou anoint to be gouernour ouer my people Israel, that he may saue my people out of the hands of the Philistims: for I haue looked vpon my people, and their crie is come vnto me.

When Samuel therefore sawe Saul, the Lord answered him, See, this is the man whom I spake to thee of, he shall rule my people.

Then went Saul to Samuel in the middes of the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the Seers house is.

And Samuel answered Saul, and saide, I am the Seer: goe vp before me vnto the hie place: for ye shall eate with me to day. and to morowe I will let thee goe, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.

And as for thine asses that were lost three dayes ago, care not for them: for they are founde. and on whom is set all the desire of Israel? is it not vpon thee and on all thy fathers house?

But Saul answered, and said, Am not I the sonne of Iemini of the smallest tribe of Israel? and my familie is the least of all the families of the tribe of Beniamin. Wherefore then speakest thou so to me?

And Samuel tooke Saul and his seruant, and brought them into the chamber, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden: which were about thirtie persons.

And Samuel saide vnto the cooke, Bring foorth the portion which I gaue thee, and whereof I said vnto thee, Keepe it with thee.

And the cooke tooke vp the shoulder, and that which was vpon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Beholde, that which is left, set it before thee and eate: for hitherto hath it bene kept for thee, saying, Also I haue called the people. So Saul did eate with Samuel that day.

And when they were come downe from the hie place into the citie, he communed with Saul vpon the top of the house.

And when they arose early about ye spring of the day, Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Vp, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out, both he, and Samuel.

And when they were come downe to the ende of the citie, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the seruant goe before vs, (and he went) but stand thou still nowe, that I may shewe thee the worde of God.

Saul wird zum König erwählt

Es war ein Mann von Benjamin, namens Kis, ein Sohn Abiels, des Sohnes Serrors, des Sohnes Bechoraths, des Sohnes Aphias, des Sohnes eines Benjamiten, stark an Kraft.

Dieser hatte einen Sohn, Namens Saul, auserlesen und tüchtig; und es war kein tüchtigerer unter den Söhnen Israels als er. Von der Schulter an aufwärts überragte er alles Volk.

Nun waren die Eselinnen Kis, des Vaters Sauls, verloren gegangen; und Kis sprach zu Saul, seinem Sohne: Nimm einen von den Knechten mit dir und mache dich auf und gehe hin und suche die Eselinnen. Die durchwanderten also das ganze Gebiet Ephraim

und das Gebiet von Salisa, ohne sie zu finden, und durchzogen sodann das Land Salim, aber sie waren nicht da, und das Land Jemini, aber sie fanden sie nicht.

Als sie aber in das Gebiet von Suph kamen, sprach Saul zu dem Knecht, der bei ihm war: Komm, lass uns umkehren, denn mein Vater lässt vielleicht die Eselinnen fahren und wird um uns besorgt.

Dieser sprach zu ihm: Siehe, ein Mann Gottes ist in dieser Stadt, ein angesehener Mann; alles, was er sagt, trifft sicher ein. So lass uns denn jetzt dorthin gehen, vielleicht gibt er uns Auskunft über unsern Weg, wegen dessen wir gekommen sind.

Da sprach Saul zu seinem Knechte: Siehe, wir wollen hingehen, aber was werden wir dem Manne Gottes bringen? Das Brot ist in unsern Reisesäcken ausgegangen und wir haben kein Geschenk, um es dem Manne Gottes zu geben, noch sonst etwas anderes.

Da antwortete der Knecht dem Saul wiederum und sprach: Siehe, der vierte Teil eines Silber-Staters findet sich in meiner Hand, diesen wollen wir dem Manne Gottes geben, dass er uns unsern Weg angebe.

(Vor Zeiten sprach jeder, welcher Gott zu fragen ging, in Israel so: Kommet und lasst uns zum Seher gehen; denn die, welche heutzutage Propheten heißen, wurden einst Seher genannt.)

Saul sagte zu seinem Knechte: Dein Vorschlag ist sehr gut. Komm, lass uns hingehen! So gingen sie denn in die Stadt, in welcher der Mann Gottes war.

Als sie nun den Hügel zur Stadt hinaufstiegen, trafen sie Mädchen, welche herauskamen, um Wasser zu schöpfen, und sie sprachen zu ihnen: Ist hier der Seher?

Diese antworteten und sprachen zu ihnen: Er ist hier; siehe, da vor dir, eile nun! Denn er ist heute in die Stadt gekommen, weil das Volk heute ein Opfer auf der Höhe feiert.

Wenn ihr in die Stadt kommt, werdet ihr ihn alsbald finden, bevor er auf die Höhe hinaufsteigt, um zu essen. Denn das Volk wird nicht essen, bis er kommt; denn er segnet das Opfer, alsdann erst essen die, welche geladen sind. So gehet nun hinauf, denn heute werdet ihr ihn finden.

Da gingen sie in die Stadt hinauf; und als sie in die Mitte der Stadt gekommen waren, erschien Samuel ihnen entgegen hinausgehend, um auf die Höhe zu steigen.

Der Herr aber hatte Samuel an dem Tage, bevor Saul kam, eine Offenbarung gegeben und gesagt:

Morgen, zu eben dieser Stunde, welche jetzt ist, werde ich einen Mann aus dem Lande Benjamin zu dir senden, diesen sollst du zum Fürsten über mein Volk Israel salben und er soll mein Volk aus der Hand der Philister erretten; denn ich habe mein Volk angesehen, weil ihr Rufen zu mir gedrungen ist.

Als Samuel nun Saul erblickte, sprach der Herr zu ihm: Siehe, das ist der Mann, von dem ich dir gesagt habe: Dieser soll über mein Volk herrschen!

Saul aber trat zu Samuel in der Torhalle heran und sprach: Zeige mir doch an, wo ist das Haus des Sehers?

Samuel antwortete Saul und sprach: Ich bin der Seher. Gehe mir voraus auf die Höhe, damit ihr heute mit mir esset, so werde ich dich am Morgen ziehen lassen und dir alles sagen, was du auf dem Herzen hast.

Und um die Eselinnen, die du vorgestern verloren hast, sei unbekümmert; denn sie haben sich gefunden. Und wem wird alles gehören, was das Beste ist in Israel? Nicht dir und dem ganzen Hause deines Vaters?

Saul aber antwortete und sprach: Bin ich nicht ein Sohn Benjamins, aus dem kleinsten Stamme Israels, und ist mein Geschlecht nicht das geringste unter allen Geschlechtern des Stammes Benjamin? Warum hast du also zu mir geredet?

Da nahm Samuel Saul und seinen Diener, führte sie in den Speisesaal, und wies ihnen ihren Platz an der Spitze derer an, welche geladen waren; es waren ihrer nämlich ungefähr dreißig Männer.

Und Samuel sprach zum Koche: Gib das Stück her, das ich dir gegeben habe, mit der Weisung, du solltest es besonders bei dir aufheben!

Da trug der Koch das Schulterstück auf und setzte es Saul vor. Und Samuel sprach: Siehe da, was noch übrig geblieben ist! Lege es vor dich und iß; denn mit Fleisch ward es für dich aufbehalten, als ich das Volk rief. Und Saul aß mit Samuel an jenem Tage.

Alsdann gingen sie von der Höhle in die Stadt herab, und er redete mit Saul auf dem Dache und bereitete Saul ein Lager auf dem Dache, und er schlief allda.

Als sie nun am Morgen aufgestanden waren und der Tag schon anbrach, rief Samuel dem Saul auf dem Dache zu und sprach: Stehe auf, dass ich dich entlasse. Da stand Saul auf, und beide gingen hinaus, er nämlich und Samuel.

Saul zum König gesalbt

Während sie nun am Ende der Stadt herabgingen, sprach Samuel zu Saul: Sage dem Knecht, dass er uns vorausgehe und weiterschreite; du aber bleibe ein wenig stehen, dass ich dir das Wort des Herrn kundtue.
