- Kapitel 24 -

Wisdom praises herself: her origin, her dwelling, her dignity, and her fruits.

Wisdom will praise her own mind, and she will be honored by God, and she will be glorified in the midst of her people.

And she will open her mouth in the churches of the Most High, and she will be glorified in the sight of his virtue.

And in the midst of her own people, she will be exalted. And she will be admired by the holy assembly.

And she will have praise within the multitude of the elect. And she will be blessed among the blessed. And she will say:

“I went forth from the mouth of the Most High, as the first-born before all creatures.

I caused an unfailing light to arise in the heavens. And I covered all the earth like a cloud.

I lived in the highest places, and my throne is in the pillar of a cloud.

I alone have encompassed the circuit of heaven, and have penetrated to the depths of the abyss, and have walked upon the waves of the sea,

and have stood upon the whole earth. And among every people,

and in every nation, I have held primacy.

And by virtue, I have tread upon the hearts of all, the great and the lowly. And I have sought my rest in all of them. And I will continue, as the inheritance of the Lord.

Then the Creator of all things instructed and spoke with me. And the One who created me rested in my tabernacle.

And he said to me: ‘Let your dwelling place be with Jacob, and let your inheritance be in Israel, for you shall take root among my elect.’

From the beginning, and before the world, I was created. And even unto the future world, I will not cease to exist. For I have ministered before him in the holy habitation.

And in this way, I was established in Zion. And likewise, in the holy city, I found rest. And my authority was in Jerusalem.

And I took root among an honorable people, within the portion of my God, within his inheritance. And so my abode is in the full assembly of the saints.

I was exalted like a cedar in Lebanon and like a cypress on Mount Zion.

I was exalted like a palm tree in Kadesh and like a rose bush in Jericho.

I was exalted like a beautiful olive tree in the plains, and like a sycamore tree beside the waters along a wide road.

I gave off an aromatic fragrance like cinnamon or balsam. I produced a sweet odor like the best myrrh.

And I perfumed my dwelling place with sweet gum, and aromatic resin, and flower petals, and aloe, as well as the finest cedar from Lebanon. And my fragrance is like undiluted balsam.(a)

I have extended my branches like a terebinth tree, and my branches are of honor and grace.

Like the vine, I have born the fruit of a sweet fragrance. And my flowers are the fruit of honor and integrity.

I am the mother of the beauty of love, and of fear, and of knowledge, and of holy hope.

All grace of the way and of the truth is in me. All hope of life and of virtue is in me.

Journey toward me, all you who desire me, and be filled by my harvest.

For my spirit is sweeter than honey, and my inheritance is better than honey and the honeycomb.

My memory is for the generations of all ages.

Whoever consumes me will hunger still. And whoever drinks me will thirst still.

Whoever listens to me will not be confounded. And whoever acts in me will not sin.

Whoever elucidates me will have eternal life.”

All this is a book of life, and a covenant of the Most High, and an acknowledgement of truth.

Moses commanded the law by the precepts of justice, and an inheritance to the house of Jacob, and the promises to Israel.

God appointed David as his servant, in order to raise up from him a most mighty King, who would sit upon the throne of honor forever.(b)

It is he who fulfills wisdom, like the Phison river and the Tigris river in the first days.

It is he who fulfills understanding, like the river Euphrates. It is he who multiplies understanding, like the river Jordan in the time of the harvest.

He sends forth discipline like the light, and he stands forth like the river Gehon in the time of the vintage.(c)

He first had perfect knowledge of her, for a weaker one would not search for her.(d)

For her thoughts abound like the sea, and her counsels abound like the great abyss.

“I, wisdom, have poured forth rivers.

I am like a brook leading to a river of immense waters. I am like a channel flowing from a river. And I went forth from Paradise like an aqueduct.

I said: I will irrigate my garden of plantings, and I will thoroughly water the fruits of my field.

And behold, my brook became overflowing, and my river drew near to the sea.

For I illuminate doctrine to all, like the first light. And I will announce doctrine, even to those who are far away.

I will reach to all the lower parts of the earth, and I will gaze upon all who sleep, and I will illuminate all who hope in the Lord.

Even now, I pour forth doctrine like prophecy. And even now, I bequeath doctrine to those who seek wisdom. And I will not cease from their progeny, even unto the holy time.

See how I have not labored for myself alone, but for all who are seeking truth!”

(a)24:21 The word ‘ungula’ literally means claw or talon, but is also used in botany to refer to the claw-shaped base of certain flower petals. Galbanum is a type of aromatic resin. Sweet gum is the closest translation which preserves the figurative meaning of the text and also is easily understandable in English. Challoner translates ‘gutta’ (lit. a droplet) as aloe. The phrase ‘Libanus non incisus’ refers to cedar wood from Lebanon (see previous verse). The phrase ‘non incisus’ means uncut, but certainly it is not an uncut tree; rather, it is an expression referring to the excellence of the cedar wood.(Conte)

Die Weisheit lobt sich selbst: ihren Ursprung, ihre Wohnstätte, ihre Würde und ihre Früchte

Die Weisheit lobt sich selbst und findet Ehre durch Gott und rühmt sich inmitten seines Volkes,

tut in der Versammlung des Allerhöchsten ihren Mund auf und rühmt sich angesichts seiner Heerscharen

und wird inmitten ihres Volkes erhoben und in der vollen Versammlung der Heiligen bewundert

und unter der Schar der Auserwählten erhält sie Lob und wird unter den Gesegneten gesegnet, da sie spricht:

Ich bin aus dem Munde des Allerhöchsten hervorgegangen, als die Erstgeborene vor aller Schöpfung.

Ich bewirkte, dass das unversiegbare Licht am Himmel aufging, und wie ein Nebel bedeckte ich die ganze Erde.

Meine Wohnung war in den Höhen und mein Thron ruhte auf einer Wolkensäule.

Den Umkreis des Himmels umwandelte ich allein, in die Tiefen des Abgrundes drang ich, wandelte auf den Fluten des Meeres

und auf der ganzen Erde stand ich und über alle Völker

und über alle Nationen übte ich die Herrschaft

und bezwang die Herzen aller Großen und Niedrigen; und bei diesen allen sah ich mich um, wo ich eine Ruhestätte fände; in dem Erbe des Herrn will ich weilen.

Da gebot und sprach zu mir der Schöpfer aller Dinge und der mich geschaffen, ließ mich in meinem Zelte ruhen

und sprach zu mir: In Jakob sei deine Wohnung und in Israel habe dein Erbe und bei meinen Auserwählten schlage Wurzel.

Im Anfange und vor aller Zeit bin ich erschaffen und werde in aller Ewigkeit nicht aufhören und in der heiligen Wohnung diente ich vor ihm.

Und so ward mir eine feste Stätte auf Sion, in der heiligen Stadt verlieh er mir gleicherweise einen Ruheort und so herrschte ich in Jerusalem.

Ich schlug Wurzel bei einem geehrten Volk und im Anteile meines Gottes, der sein Erbe ist; und bei der Menge der Heiligen ist mein Aufenthalt.

Ich wuchs empor wie eine Zeder auf dem Libanon und wie eine Zypresse auf dem Berge Sion,

wie eine Palme in Kades wuchs ich empor und wie ein Rosenstock in Jericho,

wie ein lieblicher Ölbaum auf den Gefilden und wie ein Ahornbaum wuchs ich auf am Wasser auf den Plätzen,

wie Zimmet und wohlriechender Balsam gab ich Duft und verbreitete lieblichen Geruch wie die auserlesenste Myrrhe

und wie Storax und Galban und Onyx und Stakte, und wie Rauchwerk, das ohne Einschnitt hervorquillt, durchduftete ich meine Wohnung und und wie ungemischter Balsam war mein Wohlgeruch.

Wie eine Terebinthe breitete ich meine Zweige aus, voll Pracht und Lieblichkeit waren meine Zweige.

Einem Weinstock gleich sprosste ich mit lieblichem Dufte und meine Blüten trugen herrliche und reiche Frucht.

Ich bin die Mutter der schönen Liebe und der Furcht, der Erkenntnis und der heiligen Hoffnung.

Bei mir ist alle Gnade des Wandels und der Wahrheit, bei mir alle Hoffnung des Lebens und der Tugend.

Kommet her zu mir alle, die ihr meiner begehrt, und sättiget euch an meinen Früchten!

Denn mein Geist ist süßer als Honig und mein Besitz über Honig und Honigseim.

Mein Andenken überdauert alle Geschlechter in Ewigkeit.

Wer mich kostet, hungert noch; und wer von mir trinkt, dürstet noch.

Wer auf mich hört, wird nicht zuschanden, und wer sich um mich bemüht, wir nicht sündigen.

Die über mich Licht verbreiten, erhalten das ewige Leben.

Alles dies ist das Buch des Lebens, der Bund des Allerhöchsten und die Erkenntnis der Wahrheit.

Als Gesetz gab es Moses in den Geboten der Gerechtigkeit, als Erbteil dem Hause Jakob und als Verheißungen für Israel.

Er verhieß seinem Diener David, aus ihm den mächtigsten König zu erwecken, der auf dem Throne der Herrlichkeit sitzen soll in Ewigkeit.

Er strömt Weisheit aus wie der Phison und wie der Tigris zur Zeit der Erstlinge,

erfüllt mit Einsicht wie der Euphrat und fließt reichlich wie der Jordan zur Zeit der Ernte.

Er strömt Zucht aus wie Licht und leistet Hilfe wie der Gehon zur Zeit der Weinlese.

Er kannte sie als der erste vollkommen und ein Schwächerer ergründet sie nicht,

denn voller als das Meer ist ihr Sinn und ihr Ratschluss tiefer als der große Abgrund.

Ich, die Weisheit, goß die Ströme aus.

Ich bin wie ein Arm unendlicher Gewässer aus einem Strome, ich bin wie der Kanal eines Flusses und wie eine Wasserleitung ging ich aus einem Lustgarten hervor.

Ich sprach: Ich will meinen Pflanzgarten bewässern und die Früchte meiner Auen tränken.

Und siehe, der Kanal ward mir zum Strome und der Strom mir zum Meere;

denn ich will meine Lehre ausstrahlen wie Morgenglanz für alle und sie kund machen bis in die Ferne.

Ich will alle Tiefen der Erde durchdringen und alle heimsuchen, die entschlafen sind, und alle erleuchten, die auf den Herrn vertrauen.

Forthin will ich Belehrung wie Weissagung ausgießen und sie denen zurücklassen, welche die Weisheit suchen, und bei ihren Nachkommen bleiben bis in die heilige Ewigkeit.

Sehet, dass ich mich nicht für mich allein abmühe, sondern für alle, welche nach Wahrheit trachten.
