- Kapitel 40 -

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after Nebuzaradan, the leader of the military, had released him from Ramah, where he had taken him, bound in chains, along with all those who were being carried away from Jerusalem and from Judah, and were being led to Babylon.

Therefore, the leader of the military, taking Jeremiah, said to him: “The Lord your God has declared this evil over this place,

and he has brought it. And the Lord has done just as he has spoken. For you have sinned against the Lord, and you have not heeded his voice, and so this word has happened to you.

Now therefore, behold, I have released you this day from the chains which were on your hands. If it pleases you to come with me into Babylon, then come. And I will set my eyes upon you. But if it displeases you to come with me into Babylon, then remain. Behold, all the land is in your sight. Whatever you will choose, and wherever it will please you to go, so shall you go, proceeding to that place.

And you may decline to come with me. For you may live with Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has made governor over the cities of Judah. Therefore, you may live with him in the midst of the people. And you may go wherever it will please you to go.” And the leader of the military also gave him foods and gifts, and he released him.

Then Jeremiah went to Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, at Mizpah. And he lived with him in the midst of the people, those who had been left behind in the land.

Gedaliah Governs in Judah

(2 Kings 25:22–24)

And when all the leaders of the army, who had been dispersed throughout the regions, they and their associates, had heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, governor of the land, and that he had committed to him the men, and women, and children, and the poor of the land, who had not been carried away to Babylon,

they went to Gedaliah at Mizpah, with Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan, the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah, the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai, who were of Netophathi, and Jezaniah, the son of Maacathi, they and their men.

And Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, swore to them and to their companions, saying: “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Live in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.

Behold, I live at Mizpah, so that I may follow the instruction of the Chaldeans who are sent to us. But as for you, gather the vintage, and the harvest, and the oil, and store it up in your vessels, and dwell in your cities, which you hold.”

So then, all the Jews, who were in Moab, and among the sons of Ammon, and in Idumea, and in all the regions, when they had heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judea, and that he had made Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, governor over them,

all the Jews, I say, returned from all the places to which they had fled, and they came into the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah. And they gathered wine and an exceedingly great harvest.

The Plot against Gedaliah

Then Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the leaders of the army, who had been dispersed in the regions, came to Gedaliah at Mizpah.

And they said to him: “Know that Baalis, the king of the sons of Ammon, has sent Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, to strike down your life.” And Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, did not believe them.(a)

But Johanan, the son of Kareah, spoke to Gedaliah, separately, at Mizpah, saying: “I will go, and I will strike down Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, without anyone knowing; otherwise he may kill you, and all the Jews will be scattered who have been gathered to you, and the remnant of Judah will perish.”

And Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, said to Johanan, the son of Kareah: “Do not do this word. For what you have said about Ishmael is false.”

Jeremia mit Gedalja, dem Statthalter

Wort, welches an Jeremias von dem Herrn erging, nachdem ihn Nabuzardan, der Oberste der Leibwache, von Rama freigelassen, als er ihn mit Ketten gebunden aus der Mitte aller hatte holen lassen, die von Jerusalem und Juda auszogen und nach Babylon geführt wurden.

Es ließ nämlich der Anführer der Leibwache den Jeremias holen und sprach zu ihm: Der Herr, dein Gott, hat über diesen Ort dies Unheil angedroht

und hat es über ihn kommen lassen; der Herr hat getan, wie er geredet hat, denn ihr habt wider den Herrn gesündigt und auf seine Stimme nicht gehört und so ist euch solches widerfahren.

Und nun siehe, ich löse dir heute die Fesseln, die an deinen Händen sind; gefällt es dir, mit mir nach Babylon zu kommen, so komm und ich will für dich Sorge tragen, gefällt es dir aber nicht, mit mir nach Babylon zu kommen, so bleibe; siehe, das ganze Land liegt vor dir offen; was du auch wählst und wohin es dir gefällt zu ziehen, dahin gehe!

Magst du nicht mit mir kommen, so bleibe bei Godolias, dem Sohne Ahikams, des Sohnes Saphans, den der König von Babylon als Statthalter über die Städte von Juda gesetzt hat; bleibe also bei ihm inmitten des Volkes oder wohin es dir gefällt, zu gehen, dahin gehe! Dann gab ihm der Oberste der Leibwache Lebensmittel und Geschenke und entließ ihn.

So kam Jeremias zu Godolias, dem Sohne Ahikams, nach Masphath und wohnte mit ihm inmitten des Volkes, das im Lande zurückgelassen war.

(2. Könige 25,22-24)

Da nun alle Heeresobersten, welche im Lande zerstreut waren, mit ihren Leuten vernahmen, dass der König von Babylon Godolias, den Sohn Ahikams, als Statthalter über das Land gesetzt und ihm die Männer und Frauen, die Kinder und Armen des Landes anvertraut hatte, die nicht nach Babylon weggeführt waren,

kamen sie zu Godolias in Masphath, nämlich Ismahel, der Sohn Nathanias, und Johanan und Jonathan, die Söhne Karees, und Sareas, der Sohn Thanehumeths, und die Söhne Ophis, die von Netophathi waren, und Jezonias, der Sohn des Maachathiters, mit ihren Leuten.

Und Godolias, der Sohn Ahikams, des Sohnes Saphans, schwor ihnen und ihren Begleitern, indem er sprach: Fürchtet euch nicht, den Chaldäern dienstbar zu werden; bleibet im Lande und seid dem Könige von Babylon untergeben, so wird es euch wohlergehen.

Sehet, ich bleibe in Masphath, um der Befehle der Chaldäer, die zu uns gesandt werden, gewärtig zu sein; ihr aber erntet Wein und Früchte und Öl und verwahret alles in euern Gefäßen und bleibet in euern Städten, welche ihr in Besitz nehmt.

Aber auch alle Juden, welche in Moab und unter den Söhnen Ammons und in Edom und in allen Landschaften waren, hörten, dass der König von Babylon in Judäa einen Rest übriggelassen und über sie Godolias, den Sohn Ahikams, des Sohnes Saphans, als Statthalter gesetzt habe;

da kehrten denn alle Juden aus allen Orten, an die sie geflüchtet waren, zurück und kamen in das Land Juda zu Godolias nach Masphath und hielten Weinlese und ernteten überaus reichlich.

Johanan aber, der Sohn Karees, und alle Anführer des Heeres, die im Lande zerstreut waren, kamen zu Godolias nach Masphath

und sprachen zu ihm: Wisse, dass Baalis, der König der Söhne Ammons, Ismahel, den Sohn Nathanias, ausgesandt hat, dich zu erschlagen. Godolias aber, der Sohn Ahikams, glaubte ihnen nicht.

Da sprach Johanan, der Sohn Karees, insgeheim in Masphath zu Godolias, also: Ich will hingehen und Ismahel, den Sohn Nathanias, erschlagen, ohne dass jemand es weiß, dass er dich nicht töte und dass nicht alle Juden, die sich um dich gesammelt haben, sich zerstreuen und was von Juda übriggeblieben ist, zugrunde gehe.

Godolias aber, der Sohn Ahikams, sprach zu Johanan, dem Sohne Karees: Tue dies nicht! Denn du redest Lügen über Ismahel.
