- Kapitel 4 -

Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there. Soon, the near kinsman of whom Boaz had spoken came by. Boaz said to him, “My friend, come over and sit down here.” The man came over and sat down.

Then Boaz took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down.

Boaz said to the near kinsman, “Naomi, who has returned from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that was our brother Elimelech’s.

I thought to inform you and say to you, ‘Buy it in the presence of those who are sitting here, and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you wish to redeem it, redeem it. But if you do not wish to redeem it, then tell me, so that I may know, for there is no one to redeem it besides you, and I am after you.” Then the other man said, “I will redeem it.”

Then Boaz said, “On the day that you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also take Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead man, in order to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance.”

Then the near kinsman said, “I cannot redeem it for myself without damaging my own inheritance. You take my right of redemption for yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”

Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and exchange of goods. To confirm all things, a man took off his shoe and gave it to his neighbor; this was the manner of making legal agreements in Israel.

So the near kinsman said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” and he took off his sandal.

Then Boaz said to the elders and to all the people, “You are witnesses today that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s from the hand of Naomi.

Moreover about Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon: I have also acquired her to be my wife, in order that I might raise up the name of the dead man on his inheritance, so that his name will not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his place. You are witnesses today.”

All the people who were in the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May Yahweh make the woman who has come into your house like Rachel and Leah, the two who built up the house of Israel; and may you prosper in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem.

May your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the offspring that Yahweh will give you with this young woman.”

Boaz Marries Ruth

So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. He slept with her, and Yahweh allowed her to become pregnant, and she bore a son.

The women said to Naomi, “May Yahweh be blessed, who has not left you today without a near kinsman, this baby. May his name be famous in Israel.

May he be for you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him.”

Naomi took the child, laid him in her bosom, and took care of him.

The women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He became the father of Jesse, who became the father of David.

The Line of David

Now these were the descendants of Perez: Perez became the father of Hezron,

Hezron became the father of Ram, Ram became the father of Amminadab,

Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon became the father of Salmon,

Salmon became the father of Boaz, Boaz became the father of Obed,

Obed became the father of Jesse, and Jesse became the father of David.

Boas erlöst Rut

Hierauf ging Booz zum Tore hinaus und setzte sich daselbst. Und als er den Verwandten vorübergehen sah, von welchem vorher Erwähnung getan ist, rief er ihn bei seinem Namen und sprach zu ihm: Komme ein wenig hierher und setze dich nieder! Dieser trat herzu und setzte sich.

Alsdann nahm Booz zehn Männer von den Ältesten der Stadt und sprach zu ihnen: Setzet euch hierher!

Als sie sich gesetzt hatten, sprach er zu dem Verwandten: Das Stück Feld, welches unserm Bruder Elimelech gehört, bietet Noemi, die aus dem Lande Moab heimgekehrt ist, feil.

Dies wollte ich dir kund tun und vor allen, die hier sitzen, und vor den Ältesten meines Volkes sagen. Willst du es nach dem Rechte der Verwandtschaft in Besitz nehmen, so kauf es und nimm es in Besitz; gefällt es dir aber nicht, so zeige mir auch das an, damit ich weiß, was ich zu tun habe; denn es ist kein Verwandter da, außer dir, der du der nächste bist, und mir, der nach dir kommt. Er aber antwortete: Ich will den Acker kaufen!

Booz sprach zu ihm: Wenn du den Acker aus der Hand kaufst, so musst du auch Ruth, die Moabitin, die Frau des Verstorbenen, nehmen, um dem Namen deines Verwandten für sein Erbeigentum wieder zu erwecken.

Da antwortete er: Ich begebe mich des Rechtes der Verwandtschaft; denn ich darf meine Familie nicht der Nachkommenschaft berauben. Übe du mein Vorrecht aus, dessen ich mich gerne zu begeben erkläre.

Nun war es von alters her Herkommen in Israel unter Verwandten, dass, wenn einer dem andern sein Recht abtrat, er zur Bestätigung der Verzichtleistung seinen Schuh auszog und ihn seinem Verwandten gab. Dies war die Beugung der Verzichtleistung in Israel.

Darum sprach Booz zu seinem Verwandten: Ziehe deinen Schuh aus! Alsbald zog er ihn von seinem Fuße.

Jener aber sprach zu den Ältesten und zu dem ganzen Volke: Ihr seid heute Zeugen, dass ich alles in Besitz nehme, was Elimelech und Mahalon gehört hat, da Noemi es übergibt;

und dass ich Ruth, die Moabitin, das Weib Mahalons, zur Frau nehme, und den Namen des Verstorbenen für sein Erbeigentum wieder zu erwecken, damit sein Name nicht ausgetilgt werde aus seinem Geschlechte, seinen Brüdern und seinem Volke. Des, sage ich, seid ihr Zeugen!

Da sprach das ganze Volk, das am Tore war, und die Ältesten: Wir sind Zeugen! Der Herr mache diese Frau, die in dein Haus einzieht, wie Rachel und Lia, welche das Haus Israel erbaut haben, dass sie ein Tugendspiegel in Ephratha sei und ihr Name gefeiert werde in Bethlehem.

Und dein Haus werde wie das Haus Phares, welchen Thamar dem Juda gebar, durch die Nachkommenschaft, welche dir der Herr von diesem Mädchen geben wird.

Nachkommenschaft von Boas und Rut

Booz also nahm Ruth und sie ward sein Weib; und als er zu ihr einging, verlieh ihr der Herr, dass sie empfing und einen Sohn gebar.

Da sprachen die Frauen zu Noemi: Gepriesen sei der Herr, der nicht zuließ, dass in deiner Familie ein Erbe fehlte, dessen Name in Israel genannt werde,

so dass du jemanden hast, der dich tröstet und dein Alter versorgt; denn deine Schwiegertochter, die dich liebt, hat ihn geboren, und sie ist für dich besser, als wenn du sieben Söhne hättest.

Und Noemi nahm den Knaben und legte ihn auf ihren Schoß und pflegte ihn wie eine Amme und Wärterin.

Die Nachbarinnen aber wünschten ihr Glück und sprachen: der Noemi ist ein Sohn geboren! Und sie nannten seinen Namen Obed; dieser ist der Vater Isais, des Vaters Davids.

Dies sind die Geschlechtsfolgen des Phares: Phares zeugte Esron,

Esron zeugte Aram, Aram zeugte Aminadab,

Aminadab zeugte Nahasson, Nahasson zeugte Salmon,

Salmon zeugte Booz, Booz zeugte Obed,

Obed zeugte Isai, Isai zeugte David.
