- Kapitel 31 -

(2 Samuel 1:1–16; 1 Chronicles 10:1–6)

Later, the Philistines again fought against the Israelites. The Israelites ran away from them, and many Israelites were killed on Mount Gilboa.

The Philistines caught up with Saul and his three sons, and they killed three of his sons, Jonathan and Abinadab and MalkiShua.

The fighting was very fierce around Saul. When the Philistine archers caught up with Saul, they wounded him badly with their arrows.

Saul said to the man who was carrying his weapons, “Take out your sword and kill me with it, in order that these heathen Philistines will not be able to thrust their swords into me and make fun of me while I am dying.” But the man who was carrying Saul’s weapons was terrified, and refused to do that. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. The sword pierced his body, and he died.

When the man carrying his weapons saw that Saul was dead, he also threw himself on his own sword and died.

So Saul, three of his sons, and the man who carried Saul’s weapons, all died on that same day.

The Philistines Possess the Towns

(1 Chronicles 10:7–10)

When the Israelite people on the north side of the Valley of Jezreel and on the east side of the Jordan River heard that the Israelite army had run away and that Saul and his sons had died, they left their towns and ran away. Then the Philistines came and occupied their cities.

The next day, when the Philistines came to take away the weapons of the dead Israelite soldiers, they found the bodies of Saul and his three sons on Mount Gilboa.

They cut off Saul’s head and took his weapons. Then they sent messengers throughout their land to proclaim the news in the temples, where they kept their idols, and to the other people, that their army had defeated the Israelites.

They put Saul’s weapons in the temple of their goddess Asherah. They also fastened the bodies of Saul and his sons to the wall that surrounded the city of Beth Shan.

Jabesh-gilead’s Tribute to Saul

(1 Chronicles 10:11–14)

When the people who lived in Jabesh in the region of Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul’s corpse,

all their bravest soldiers walked all night to Beth Shan. They took the corpses of Saul and his sons down from the city wall, and they took them back to Jabesh and burned the corpses there.

They took the bones and buried them under a big tamarisk tree. Then they fasted for seven days.

Das tragische Ende von Saul und seinen Söhnen

Die Philister aber kämpften mit Israel und die Männer Israels flohen vor den Philistern und fielen erschlagen auf dem Berge Gelboe.

Und die Philister drangen auf Saul und seine Söhne ein, schlugen Jonathas, Abinadab und Melchisua, die Söhne Sauls,

und die ganze Wucht des Kampfes wandte sich gegen Saul und die Pfeilschützen erreichten ihn, so dass er von ihnen schwer verwundet ward.

Da sprach Saul zu seinem Waffenträger: Ziehe dein Schwert und durchbohre mich! dass nicht etwa diese Unbeschnittenen kommen und mich töten und ihren Mutwillen an mir üben. Da aber sein Waffenträger es nicht tun wollte, denn er war vor Schrecken außer sich, nahm Saul sein Schwert und stürzte sich in dasselbe.

Als nun sein Waffenträger sah, dass Saul tot war, stürzte auch er sich in sein Schwert und starb mit ihm.

So starb Saul und seine drei Söhne und sein Waffenträger und alle seine Leute an diesem Tage allzumal.

(1. Chronik 10,7-10)

Als aber die Männer von Israel, welche jenseits des Tales auf der anderen Seite des Jordans waren, sahen, dass die Israeliten geflohen und dass Saul und seine Söhne gefallen waren, verließen sie ihre Städte und flohen; und die Philister kamen und ließen sich darin nieder.

Am andern Tage aber kamen die Philister, um die Erschlagenen auszuplündern, und fanden Saul und seine drei Söhne auf dem Gebirge Gelboe liegen.

Da hieben sie Saul das Haupt ab, nahmen ihm seine Waffen und sandten in das Land der Philister rings umher, damit die Nachricht in den Götzentempeln und vor dem Volke verkündet würde.

Und sie legten seine Waffen in dem Tempel der Astarte nieder, aber seinen Leichnam hingen sie an der Mauer von Bethsan auf.

(1. Chronik 10,11-14)

Als aber die Einwohner von Jabes Galaad von allem hörten, was die Philister Saul getan hatten,

machten sich alle tapferen Männer auf, wanderten die ganze Nacht hindurch und nahmen den Leichnam Sauls und die Leichname seiner Söhne von der Mauer von Bethsan ab und kamen nach Jabes Galaad und verbrannten sie daselbst.

Und sie nahmen ihre Gebeine und begruben sie im Haine von Jabes und fasteten sieben Tage.
