- Kapitel 5 -

And it comes to pass, when all the kings of the Amorite which [are] beyond the Jordan, toward the sea, and all the kings of the Canaanite which [are] by the sea, hear how that YHWH has dried up the waters of the Jordan at the presence of the sons of Israel until their passing over, that their heart is melted, and there has not been anymore spirit in them because of the presence of the sons of Israel.

At that time YHWH said to Joshua, “Make knives of flint for yourself, and return, circumcise the sons of Israel a second time”;

and Joshua makes knives of flint for himself, and circumcises the sons of Israel at the height of the foreskins.

And this [is] the thing [for] which Joshua circumcises [them]: all the people who are coming out of Egypt, who are males, all the men of war have died in the wilderness, in the way, in their coming out of Egypt,

for all the people who are coming out were circumcised, and all the people who [are] born in the wilderness, in the way, in their coming out from Egypt, they have not circumcised;

for forty years the sons of Israel have gone in the wilderness, until all the nation of the men of war who are coming out of Egypt, who did not listen to the voice of YHWH, to whom YHWH has sworn not to show them the land which YHWH swore to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey, are consumed;

and He raised up their sons in their stead, Joshua has circumcised them, for they have been uncircumcised, for they have not circumcised them in the way.

And it comes to pass, when all the nation has completed to be circumcised, that they abide in their places in the camp until their recovering;

and YHWH says to Joshua, “Today I have rolled the reproach of Egypt from off you”; and [one] calls the name of that place Gilgal to this day.

And the sons of Israel encamp in Gilgal, and make the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month, at evening, in the plains of Jericho;

and they eat of the old grain of the land on the next day of the Passover, unleavened things and roasted [grain], on this very same day;

and the manna ceases on the next day in their eating of the old grain of the land, and there has been no more manna for [the] sons of Israel, and they eat of the increase of the land of Canaan in that year.

The Commander of the LORD’s Army

And it comes to pass in Joshua’s being by Jericho, that he lifts up his eyes, and looks, and behold, [there is] one standing in front of him, and his drawn sword [is] in his hand, and Joshua goes to him, and says to him, “Are you for us or for our adversaries?”

And He says, “No, for I [am] Prince of YHWH’s host; now I have come”; and Joshua falls on his face to the earth, and pays respect, and says to Him, “What is my Lord speaking to His servant?”

And the Prince of YHWH’s host says to Joshua, “Cast off your shoe from off your foot, for the place on which you are standing is holy”; and Joshua does so.

Die Beschneidung der zweiten Generation

Als nun alle Könige der Amorrhiter, welche jenseits des Jordans auf seiner Westseite wohnten, und alle Könige der Chananiter, welche die Ortschaften nahe am großen Meere innehatten, hörten, dass der Herr das Wasser des Jordans vor den Söhnen Israels hatte austrocknen lassen, bis sie hinübergezogen waren, wurde ihr Herz verzagt und sie ließen den Mut sinken; denn sie fürchteten sich vor dem Einzuge der Söhne Israels.

Zu dieser Zeit sprach der Herr zu Josue: Mache dir steinerne Messer und beschneide die Söhne Israels zum zweiten Male.

Da tat er, was der Herr geboten hatte, und beschnitt die Söhne Israels am Hügel der Vorhäute.

Dies aber ist die Ursache der zweiten Beschneidung: Das ganze Volk, das aus Ägypten auszog, soweit es männlichen Geschlechtes war, alle streitbaren Männer waren in der Wüste auf den langen Umwegen des Zuges gestorben;

diese waren alle beschnitten gewesen. Dagegen das Volk, welches in der Wüste geboren ward,

war die vierzig Jahre hindurch auf dem Wege durch die weite Wüste unbeschnitten geblieben, bis jene umkamen, welche der Stimme des Herrn nicht gehorcht hatten und denen es vordem zugeschworen, er werde sie das Land nicht sehen lassen, welches von Milch und Honig fließt.

Ihre Söhne waren an die Stelle der Väter getreten und wurden von Josue beschnitten; denn wie sie geboren waren, so waren sie in der Vorhaut geblieben, und niemand hatte sie auf dem Wege beschnitten.

Nachdem nun alle beschnitten waren, bleiben sie an demselben Lagerorte, bis sie geheilt waren.

Da sprach der Herr zu Josue: Heute habe ich die Schmach Ägyptens von euch hinweggenommen. Und jener Ort ward Galgala genannt, bis auf den gegenwärtigen Tag.

Während nun die Söhne Israels in Galgala blieben, feierten sie am vierzehnten Tage, des Monats am Abend, in den Ebenen Jerichos, das Phase,

und am andern Tag aßen sie von den Früchten des Landes, ungesäuertes Brot, und Geröstetes von demselben Jahre.

Das Manna aber hörte auf, nachdem sie von den Früchten des Landes gegessen hatten, und die Söhne Israels genossen hinfort diese Speise nicht mehr, sondern aßen von den Früchten desselben Jahres aus dem Lande Chanaan.

Der Befehlshaber des Heeres des HERRN

Als aber Josue auf dem Gefilde der Stadt Jericho war, erhob er seine Augen und sah sich gegenüber einen Mann stehen, der ein gezücktes Schwert in seiner Hand hielt. Da ging er auf ihn zu und sprach: Gehörst du zu uns oder zu den Feinden?

Er antwortete: Das nicht, vielmehr bin ich der Führer des Heeres des Herrn, und komme soeben.

Da fiel Josue auf sein Angesicht zur Erde, betete an und sprach: Was hat mein Herr seinem Knechte zu sagen?

Er sprach: Ziehe deine Schuhe von deinen Füßen; denn der Ort, an dem du stehest, ist heilig. Da tat Josue, wie ihm geboten war.
