- Kapitel 11 -

And it comes to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor hears, that he sends to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,

and to the kings who [are] on the north in the hill-country, and in the plain south of Chinneroth, and in the low country, and in the elevations of Dor, on the west,

[to] the Canaanite on the east, and on the west, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the hill-country, and the Hivite under Hermon, in the land of Mizpeh—

and they go out, they and all their camps with them, a people numerous, as the sand which [is] on the seashore for multitude, and [with] very many horse and charioteer;

and all these kings are met together, and they come and encamp together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel.

And YHWH says to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of their presence, for about this time tomorrow I am giving all of them slain before Israel; hamstring their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.”

And Joshua comes, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom, and they suddenly fall on them;

and YHWH gives them into the hand of Israel, and they strike them and pursue them to the great Sidon, and to Misrephoth-Maim, and to the Valley of Mizpeh eastward, and they strike them, until he has not left a remnant to them;

and Joshua does to them as YHWH commanded to him; he has hamstrung their horses, and burned their chariots with fire.

And Joshua turns back at that time, and captures Hazor, and he has struck its king by the sword; for Hazor [was] formerly head of all these kingdoms;

and they strike every person who [is] in it by the mouth of the sword; he has devoted—he has not left anyone breathing, and he has burned Hazor with fire;

and all the cities of these kings, and all their kings, Joshua has captured, and he strikes them by the mouth of the sword; he devoted them, as Moses, servant of YHWH, commanded.

Only, all the cities which are standing by their hill, Israel has not burned them—except Joshua has burned Hazor, only;

and all the spoil of these cities, and the livestock, the sons of Israel have spoiled for themselves; only, they have struck every man by the mouth of the sword, until their destroying them; they have not left anyone breathing.

As YHWH commanded His servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua has done; he has not turned aside a thing of all that YHWH commanded Moses.

Joshua Takes the Whole Land

And Joshua takes all this land: the hill-country, and all the south, and all the land of Goshen, and the low country, and the plain, even the hill-country of Israel and its low lands,

from the Mount of Halak, which is going up [to] Seir, and to Ba‘al-Gad, in the Valley of Lebanon, under Mount Hermon; and he has captured all their kings, and he strikes them, and puts them to death.

Joshua has made war with all these kings [for] many days;

there has not been a city which made peace with the sons of Israel except the Hivite, inhabitants of Gibeon; they have taken the whole in battle;

for it has been from YHWH to strengthen their heart, to meet in battle with Israel, in order to devote them, so that they have no grace, but in order to destroy them, as YHWH commanded Moses.

And Joshua comes at that time, and cuts off the Anakim from the hill-country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill-country of Judah, and from all the hill-country of Israel; Joshua has devoted them with their cities.

There has not been Anakim left in the land of the sons of Israel; only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, were they left.

And Joshua takes the whole of the land, according to all that YHWH has spoken to Moses, and Joshua gives it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions, by their tribes; and the land has rest from war.

Die Eroberung des Nordens

Als dies Jabin, der König von Asor, vernahm, schickte er zu Jobab, dem König von Madon, und zu dem Könige von Semeron, und zu dem Könige von Achsaph,

sowie zu den Königen im Norden, welche auf dem Gebirge und in der Ebene, im Süden von Keneroth, und in der Niederung und den Gegenden von Dor am Meere wohnten;

ebenso auch zu den Chananitern im Osten und Westen, zu den Amorrhitern, Hethitern, Pherezitern und Jebusitern in´s Bergland; und zu den Hevitern, welche am Fuße des Hermon, im Lande Maspha, wohnten.

Da zogen sie alle mit ihren Heerhaufen aus, ein Volk zahlreich wie der Sand am Ufer des Meeres, auch Rosse und Wagen in ungeheurer Menge.

Alle diese Könige kamen am Wasser Merom zusammen, um gegen Israel zu kämpfen.

Da sprach der Herr zu Josue: Fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen! Denn morgen um diese Stunde werde ich sie alle vor Israel preisgeben, dass sie erschlagen werden; ihre Pferde sollst du lähmen und ihre Wagen im Feuer verbrennen.

Und Josue und das ganze Heer mit ihm kamen plötzlich über sie am Wasser Merom und überfielen sie,

und der Herr gab sie in die Hand Israels. Diese schlugen sie und verfolgten sie bis nach Groß-Sidon, und bis an das Wasser Maserephoth, und bis in die Ebene Masphe, welche auf der Ostseite desselben liegt. So schlug er alle, dass keiner von ihnen übrig blieb;

und er tat, wie der Herr ihm geboten hatte: ihre Pferde lähmte er, und ihre Wagen verbrannte er im Feuer.

Dann kehrte er sofort wieder um, nahm Asor ein, und schlug dessen König mit dem Schwerte; Asor nämlich war vor Zeiten das Haupt aller dieser Reiche.

Und er schlug alles Lebende, das darin weilte; nichts ließ er darin übrig, sondern verheerte alles bis zur Vernichtung, und die Stadt selbst zerstörte er durch Feuer.

Auch alle Städte ringsum und ihre Könige brachte er in seine Gewalt, und schlug sie, und vernichtete sie, wie Moses, der Diener Gottes, ihm geboten hatte.

Mit Ausnahme der Städte, welche auf Hügeln und Anhöhen lagen, brannte Israel alle nieder; Asor allein, das sehr befestigt war, verzehrte das Feuer.

Die ganze Beute aus diesen Städten und das Vieh teilten die Söhne Israels unter sich, die Menschen hingegen töteten sie alle.

Wie der Herr Moses, seinem Knechte, geboten hatte, so gebot Moses dem Josue, und dieser erfüllte alles; von allen Vorschriften, welche der Herr dem Moses gegeben hatte, übertrat er auch nicht ein Wort.

Zusammenfassung der Eroberungen Josuas

So nahm Josue das ganze Bergland, das Südland, das Land Gosen, die Ebene, die westliche Seite, und das Gebirge Israel und dessen Niederungen ein,

sowie einen Teil des Gebirges, das sich von Seir bis Baalgad erhebt, im Tale des Libanon, am Fuße des Berges Hermon; und er bekam alle ihre Könige in seine Gewalt, und schlug sie, und tötete sie.

Lange Zeit hindurch kämpfte Josue gegen diese Könige.

Es gab keine Stadt, welche sich den Söhnen Israels selbst ergab, außer den Hevitern, die in Gabaon wohnten; denn alle nahm er im Kampfe ein.

Denn es war der Ratschluss des Herrn, dass ihre Herzen verstockt wurden, und dass sie gegen Israel kämpften und fielen, und kein Erbarmen verdienten, und vernichtet wurden, wie der Herr dem Moses geboten hatte.

Um diese Zeit kam Josue und vertilgte die Enakiter vor dem Gebirge, von Hebron, Dabir und Anab, und von dem ganzen Gebirge Juda und Israel, und zerstörte ihre Städte.

Keinen vom Stamme der Enakiter ließ er im Lande der Söhne Israels übrig; nur in den Städten Gaza, Geth und Azot allein blieben sie noch.

Josue also nahm das ganze Land ein, wie der Herr zu Moses geredet hatte, und gab es den Söhnen Israels zum Besitze nach ihren Abteilungen und Stämmen; und das Land ruhte vom Kampfe.
