The Prophet Ezekiel

- Kapitel 20 -

And it comes to pass, in the seventh year, in the fifth [month], on the tenth of the month, men from [the] elderly of Israel have come in to seek YHWH, and they sit before me;

and there is a word of YHWH to me, saying,

“Son of man, speak to the elderly of Israel, and you have said to them, Thus said Lord YHWH: Are you coming in to seek Me? [As] I live—I am not sought by you—a declaration of Lord YHWH.

Do you judge them? Do you judge, son of man? Cause them to know the abominations of their fathers,

and you have said to them, Thus said Lord YHWH: In the day of My fixing on Israel, || I lift up My hand, || To the seed of the house of Jacob, || And am known to them in the land of Egypt, || And I lift up My hand to them, || Saying, I [am] your God YHWH.

In that day I lifted up My hand to them, || To bring them forth from the land of Egypt, || To a land that I spied out for them, || Flowing with milk and honey, || It [is] a beauty to all the lands,

And I say to them, Let each cast away the detestable things of his eyes, || And do not be defiled with the idols of Egypt, || I [am] your God YHWH.

And they rebel against Me, || And have not been willing to listen to Me, || Each has not cast away the detestable things of their eyes, || And have not forsaken the idols of Egypt, || And I speak—to pour out My fury on them, || To complete My anger against them, || In the midst of the land of Egypt.

And I do [it] for My Name’s sake, || Not to defile [it] before the eyes of the nations, || In whose midst they [are in], || Before whose eyes I became known to them, || To bring them out from the land of Egypt.

Israel’s Rebellion in the Wilderness

And I bring them out of the land of Egypt, || And I bring them into the wilderness,

And I give My statutes to them, || And I caused them to know My judgments, || Which the man who does—lives by them.

And I have also given My Sabbaths to them, || To be for a sign between Me and them, || To know that I [am] YHWH who is sanctifying them.

And the house of Israel rebels against Me in the wilderness, || They have not walked in My statutes, || And they have despised My judgments, || Which the man who does—lives by them. And they have greatly defiled My Sabbaths, || And I speak—to pour out My fury on them in the wilderness, to consume them.

And I do [it] for My Name’s sake, || Not to defile [it] before the eyes of the nations, || Before whose eyes I brought them forth.

And also, I have lifted up My hand to them in the wilderness, || Not to bring them into the land that I had given, || Flowing with milk and honey, || It [is] a beauty to all the lands,

Because they kicked against My judgments, || And they have not walked in My statutes, || And they have defiled My Sabbaths, || For their heart is going after their idols.

And My eye has pity on them—against destroying them, || And I have not made an end of them in the wilderness.

And I say to their sons in the wilderness: Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, || And do not observe their judgments, || And do not defile yourselves with their idols.

I [am] your God YHWH, walk in My statutes, || And observe My judgments, and do them,

And sanctify My Sabbaths, || And they have been for a sign between Me and you, || To know that I [am] your God YHWH.

And the sons rebel against Me, || They have not walked in My statutes, || And they have not observed My judgments—to do them, || Which the man who does—lives by them. They have defiled My Sabbaths, || And I speak—to pour out My fury on them, || To complete My anger against them in the wilderness.

And I have turned back My hand, || And I do [it] for My Name’s sake, || Not to defile [it] before the eyes of the nations, || Before whose eyes I brought them out.

I also, I have lifted up My hand to them in the wilderness, || To scatter them among nations, || And to spread them through lands.

Because they have not done My judgments, || And they have despised My statutes, || And they have defiled My Sabbaths, || And their eyes have been after [the] idols of their fathers.

And I also, I have given statutes to them [that are] not good, || And judgments by which they do not live.

And I defile them by their own gifts, || By causing every opener of a womb to pass away, || So that I make them desolate, || So that they know that I [am] YHWH.

Israel’s Rebellion in the Land

Therefore, speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and you have said to them, Thus said Lord YHWH: Still in this your fathers have reviled Me, || In their committing a trespass against Me.

And I bring them into the land, || That I lifted up My hand to give to them, || And they see every high hill, and every thick tree, || And they sacrifice their sacrifices there, || And give the provocation of their offering there, || And make their refreshing fragrance there, || And they pour out their drink-offerings there.

And I say to them: What [is] the high place to where you are going in?” And its name is called “High Place” to this day.

“Therefore, say to the house of Israel, Thus said Lord YHWH: Are you defiling yourselves in the way of your fathers? And do you go whoring after their detestable things?

And in the offering of your gifts, || In causing your sons to pass through fire, || You are defiled by all your idols to this day, || And I am sought by you, O house of Israel? [As] I live—a declaration of Lord YHWH, I am not sought by you.

And that which is going up on your mind, || It is not at all—in that you are saying: We will be as the nations, as the families of the lands, || To serve wood and stone.

Judgment and Restoration

[As] I live—a declaration of Lord YHWH, || Do I not, with a strong hand, || And with an outstretched arm, || And with poured out fury—rule over you?

And I have brought you forth from the peoples, || And assembled you from the lands || In which you have been scattered, || With a strong hand and with an outstretched arm, || And with poured out fury.

And I have brought you into the wilderness of the peoples, || And have been judged with you there face to face.

As I was judged with your fathers, || In the wilderness of the land of Egypt, || So I am judged with you, || A declaration of Lord YHWH.

And I have caused you to pass under the rod, || And brought you into the bond of the covenant,

And cleared out the rebels from you, || And those transgressing against Me, || I bring them out from the land of their sojournings, || And they do not come to the land of Israel, || And you have known that I [am] YHWH.

And you, O house of Israel, thus said Lord YHWH: Each go, serve his idols, || And afterward, if you are not listening to Me [anyway], || But you do not defile My holy Name anymore by your gifts, and by your idols.

For on My holy mountain, || On the mountain of the height of Israel, || A declaration of Lord YHWH, || All the house of Israel serves Me there, || All of it, in the land—I accept them there, || And I seek your raised-offerings there, || And with the first-fruit of your gifts, || With all your holy things.

With refreshing fragrance I accept you, || In My bringing you out from the peoples, || And I have assembled you from the lands || In which you have been scattered, || And I have been sanctified in you || Before the eyes of the nations.

And you have known that I [am] YHWH, || In My bringing you to the ground of Israel, || To the land that I lifted up My hand || To give it to your fathers,

And you have remembered your ways there, || And all your doings, || In which you have been defiled, || And you have been loathsome in your own faces, || For all your evils that you have done.

And you have known that I [am] YHWH, || In My dealing with you for My Name’s sake, || Not according to your evil ways, || And according to your corrupt doings, O house of Israel, || A declaration of Lord YHWH.”

A Prophecy against the South

And there is a word of YHWH to me, saying,

“Son of man, set your face the way of Teman, and prophesy to the south, and prophesy to the forest of the field—the south;

and you have said to the forest of the south, Hear a word of YHWH! Thus said Lord YHWH: Behold, I am kindling a fire in you, || And it has devoured every moist tree in you, and every dry tree, || The glowing flames are not quenched, || And all faces from south to north have been burned by it.

And all flesh has seen, that I, YHWH, have kindled it—it is not quenched.”

And I say, “Aah! Lord YHWH, || They are saying of me, || Is he not using allegories?”

Und es geschah im siebten Jahr, im fünften Monat, am zehnten des Monats, dass Männer von den Ältesten Israels kamen, um den Herrn zu befragen, und sie setzten sich vor mir nieder.

Da erging an mich das Wort des Herrn also:

Menschensohn! Sprich zu den Ältesten Israels und sage zu ihnen: Also spricht der Herr, Gott: Um mich zu befragen, seid ihr gekommen? So wahr ich lebe! ich werde euch nicht antworten, spricht der Herr, Gott.

Willst du sie richten, willst du richten, Menschensohn? So zeige ihnen die Greuel ihrer Väter

und sprich zu ihnen: Also spricht der Herr, Gott: An dem Tage, da ich Israel erwählte und meine Hand erhob für das Geschlecht des Hauses Jakob und da ich ihnen im Land Ägypten erschien und meine Hand für sie erhob und sprach: Ich bin der Herr, euer Gott;

an jenem Tage erhob ich meine Hand für sie, dass ich sie aus dem Lande Ägypten in ein Land führen würde, das ich für sie ausersehen hatte, das von Milch und Honig fließt und welches das herrlichste ist unter allen Ländern.

Und ich sprach zu ihnen: Ei jeder schaffe weg, was ein Anstoß ist für seine Augen, und beflecket euch nicht an den Götzen Ägyptens; ich, der Herr, bin euer Gott!

Sie aber reizten mich zum Zorne und wollten nicht auf mich hören, keiner schaffte die Greuel seiner Augen weg und sie ließen die Götzen Ägyptens nicht. Da gedachte ich meinen Grimm über sie auszugießen und meinen Zorn voll an ihnen auszulassen inmitten des Landes Ägypten.

Doch um meines Namens willen, damit dieser nicht von den Völkern entweiht würde, in deren Mitte sie waren und unter welchen ich ihnen erschien, ließ ich sie aus dem Lande Ägypten heraus und geleitete sie in die Wüste.

So führte ich sie denn eilig aus dem Lande Ägypten heraus und geleitete sie in die Wüste.

Und ich gab ihnen meine Gebote und tat ihnen meine Rechte kund, durch welche der Mensch lebt, wenn er sie übt.

Überdies gab ich ihnen meine Sabbate, damit sie zum Zeichen seien zwischen mir und ihnen und damit sie erkennen sollten, dass ich der Herr bin, der sie heiligt.

Aber das Haus Israel reizte mich zum Zorne in der Wüste, wandelte nicht nach meinen Geboten und verwarf meine Rechte, durch welche der Mensch lebt, der sie beobachtet, und sie entweihten meine Sabbate sehr; darum dachte ich, meinen Grimm über sie auszugießen in der Wüste und sie zu vertilgen.

Doch ich handelte um meines Namens willen, dass er nicht entweiht würde vor den Völkern, vor deren Augen ich sie in Eile herausgeführt.

So erhob ich denn meine Hand über sie in der Wüste, dass ich sie nicht in das Land führen würde, welches ich ihnen zugeteilt, das von Milch und Honig fließt, ein Land, herrlich unter allen Ländern,

weil sie meine Rechte verwarfen und nach meinen Geboten nicht wandelten und meine Sabbate entweihten; denn ihr Herz ging den Götzen nach.

Doch mein Auge schonte ihrer, so dass ich sie nicht tötete und sie nicht vernichtete in der Wüste.

Und ich sprach zu ihren Söhnen in der Wüste: Wandelt nicht nach den Satzungen euerer Väter und beobachtet deren Rechte nicht und beflecket euch nicht durch ihre Götzen!

Ich, der Herr, bin euer Gott, nach meinen Satzungen wandelt und meine Rechte haltet und tuet sie

und meine Sabbate heiliget, damit sie ein Zeichen seien zwischen mir und euch und ihr erkennet, dass ich der Herr, euer Gott bin!

Aber auch die Söhne reizten mich zum Zorn; sie wandelten nicht nach meinen Geboten und achteten meiner Rechte nicht, dass sie sie taten, da doch der Mensch lebt, der sie übt, und entweihten meine Sabbate; da drohte ich, meinen Grimm über sie auszugießen und meinen Zorn an ihnen auszulassen in der Wüste.

Doch ich zog meine Hand wieder zurück und handelte um meines Namens willen, dass er nicht entweiht würde vor den Völkern, vor deren Augen ich sie eilig ausführte.

Nochmals erhob ich meine Hand wider sie in der Wüste, dass ich sie zerstreuen wollte unter die Völker und sie über die Länder worfeln,

weil sie meine Rechte nicht beobachtet, meine Gebote verschmäht, meine Sabbate entweiht und ihre Augen auf die Götzen ihrer Väter gerichtet hatten.

So habe denn auch ich ihnen Satzungen gegeben, die ihnen nicht frommten, und Rechte, durch die sie nicht lebten.

Und um ihrer Missetaten willen ließ ich zu, dass sie sich in ihren Opfergaben befleckten, indem sie alle Erstgeburt weihten, damit sie erkannten, dass ich der Herr bin.

Deshalb sprich zum Hause Israel, o Menschensohn! Und sage zu ihnen: So spricht der Herr, Gott: Auch dadurch haben mich eure Väter beschimpft, dass sie mich verachteten und verschmähten.

Als ich sie in das Land gebracht, über das ich meine Hand erhoben, es ihnen zu geben, blickten sie nach jedem belaubten Baume, um daselbst ihre Opfer zu schlachten, und brachten daselbst ihre Gaben dar, mich zum Zorne zu reizen, weihten daselbst ihren lieblichen Opferduft und spendeten ihre Trankopfer.

Da sprach ich zu ihnen: Was ist das für eine Höhe, zu der ihr geht? und daher heißt sie Höhe bis auf diesen Tag.

Darum sprich zum Hause Israel: So spricht der Herr, Gott: Wahrlich! Ihr verunreinigt euch, den Wandel eurer Väter nachahmend, und buhlt den Ursachen ihres Anstoßes nach;

ihr befleckt euch mit dem Darbringen eurer Opfergaben, indem ihr eure Kinder durch das Feuer gehen lasset, mit allen euren Götzen bis auf den heutigen Tag, und ich sollte euch Antwort geben, Haus Israel? So wahr ich lebe! spricht der Herr, Gott, ich werde euch nicht Antwort geben.

Auch das, was euer Herz sinnt, wird nicht geschehen, dass ihr sagt: wir wollen anderen Nationen gleich sein, wie die Heiden und andere Völker auf Erden sein, indem wir Holz und Stein anbeten.

Gott wird Israel wiederherstellen

So wahr ich lebe! spricht der Herr, Gott, ich will euch mit starker Hand, mit ausgestrecktem Arm und in Zornerguß herrschen.

Und ich werde euch aus den Völkern herausführen und aus den Ländern sammeln, in die ihr zerstreut wurdet, und mit starker Hand und mit ausgestrecktem Arm und mit Zornerguß werde ich über euch herrschen.

Und ich werde euch in die Wüste der Völker führen und daselbst mit euch rechten von Angesicht zu Angesicht.

Gleichwie ich über eure Väter in der Wüste des Landes Ägypten Gericht gehalten habe, so will ich euch richten, spricht der Herr, Gott.

Und ich werde euch unter mein Zepter zwingen und euch in die Fesseln des Bundes bringen.

Und ich werde von euch die Übertreter und die Gottlosen aussondern und sie aus dem Lande, wo sie wohnen, herausführen; aber in das Land Israel sollen sie nicht kommen, damit ihr erkennet, dass ich der Herr bin.

Ihr aber vom Hause Israel! so spricht der Herr, Gott: Gehet nur ein jeder seinen Götzen nach und dienet ihnen! Wenn ihr aber auch hierin nicht auf mich hört und meinen heiligen Namen noch ferner durch eure Opfergaben und durch eure Götzen entweiht,

so soll auf meinem heiligen Berg, auf dem erhabenen Berge Israels, spricht der Herr, Gott, dort soll mir das ganze Haus Israel dienen, alle, sage ich, die in dem Lande sind, in dem sie mir wohlgefallen; daselbst werde ich eure Erstlinge begehren und die Erstlinge eurer zehnten samt allem, was ihr mir heiligt.

Zu süßem Opferdufte werde ich euch aufnehmen, wenn ich euch aus den Völkern herausführe und euch aus den Landen sammle, in welche ihr zerstreut seid, und ich werde mich an euch vor den Augen der Völker heilig erweisen.

Da werdet ihr erkennen, dass ich der Herr bin, wenn ich euch in das Land Israel führe, in das Land, über das ich meine Hand erhoben, es euren Vätern zu geben.

Da werdet ihr dann zurückdenken an euren Wandel und an alle eure Schandtaten, mit denen ihr euch befleckt habt, und werdet Missfallen an euch selbst haben ob all des Bösen, das ihr begangen habt.

Und ihr werdet erkennen, dass ich der Herr bin, wenn ich euch Gutes erweise um meines Namens willen und nicht gemäß eurem bösen Wandel, doch gemäß euern schlimmen Freveln, Haus Israel! spricht der Herr, Gott.

Feuer im Wald

Und es erging an mich das Wort des Herrn also:

Menschensohn! Richte dein Angesicht auf den Weg gegen Mittag zu und ergieße deine Rede gegen Mittag und weissage über den Wald des Landes gegen Mittag.

Und sprich zu dem Walde gegen Mittag: Höre das Wort des Herrn: So spricht der Herr, Gott: Siehe, ich werde in dir ein Feuer entzünden und in dir alle grünen Bäume und alle dürren Bäume verbrennen lassen, die Flamme des Brandes soll nicht erlöschen und alle Angesichter sollen durch sie versengt werden von Mittag bis nach Mitternacht.

Und alles Fleisch soll sehen, dass ich, der Herr, es entzündet habe und dass es nicht erlöschen wird.

Da sprach ich: Ach, ach, ach, Herr Gott! Sie sagen von mir: Redet dieser nicht in lauter Gleichnissen?
