- Kapitel 16 -

(2 Chronicles 28:1–4)

In the seventeenth year of Pekah son of Remaliah, Ahaz son of Jotham, king of Judah, has reigned.

Ahaz [is] a son of twenty years in his reigning, and he has reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem, and he has not done that which [is] right in the eyes of his God YHWH, like his father David,

and he walks in the way of the kings of Israel, and he has also caused his son to pass over into fire, according to the abominations of the nations that YHWH dispossessed from the presence of the sons of Israel,

and he sacrifices and makes incense in high places, and on the heights, and under every green tree.

Then Rezin king of Aram, and Pekah son of Remaliah, king of Israel, go up to Jerusalem, to battle, and they lay siege to Ahaz, and they have not been able to fight.

At that time Rezin king of Aram has brought back Elath to Aram, and casts out the Jews from Elath, and the Arameans have come to Elath, and dwell there to this day.

And Ahaz sends messengers to Tiglath-Pileser king of Asshur, saying, “I [am] your servant and your son; come up and save me out of the hand of the king of Aram, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, who are rising up against me.”

And Ahaz takes the silver and the gold that is found in the house of YHWH, and in the treasures of the house of the king, and sends to the king of Asshur [as] a bribe.

And the king of Asshur listens to him, and the king of Asshur goes up to Damascus, and seizes it, and removes [the people of] it to Kir, and he has put Rezin to death.

The Idolatry of Ahaz

(2 Chronicles 28:16–27)

And King Ahaz goes to meet Tiglath-Pileser king of Asshur [at] Damascus, and sees the altar that [is] in Damascus, and King Ahaz sends to Urijah the priest the likeness of the altar, and its pattern, according to all its work,

and Urijah the priest builds the altar according to all that King Ahaz has sent from Damascus; so Urijah the priest did until the coming in of King Ahaz from Damascus.

And the king comes in from Damascus, and the king sees the altar, and the king draws near on the altar, and offers on it,

and burns his burnt-offering and his present as incense, and pours out his drink-offering, and sprinkles the blood of the peace-offerings that he has, on the altar.

As for the altar of bronze that [is] before YHWH—he brings [it] near from the front of the house, from between the altar and the house of YHWH, and puts it on the side of the altar, northward.

And King Ahaz commands him—Urijah the priest—saying, “On the great altar burn as incense the burnt-offering of the morning, and the present of the evening, and the burnt-offering of the king, and his present, and the burnt-offering of all the people of the land, and their present, and their drink-offerings; and all the blood of the burnt-offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice, you sprinkle on it, and the altar of bronze is for me to inquire [by].”

And Urijah the priest does according to all that King Ahaz commanded.

And King Ahaz cuts off the borders of the bases, and turns aside the laver from off them, and he has taken down the sea from off the bronze oxen that [are] under it, and puts it on a pavement of stones.

And the covered place for the Sabbath that they built in the house, and the entrance of the king outside, he turned [from] the house of YHWH, because of the king of Asshur.

And the rest of the matters of Ahaz that he did, are they not written on the scroll of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

And Ahaz lies with his fathers, and is buried with his fathers in the City of David, and his son Hezekiah reigns in his stead.

Ahas regiert in Juda

(2. Chronik 28,1-4)

Im siebzehnten Jahre Phakees, des Sohnes Romelias, wurde Achaz König, Sohn Joathams, des Königs von Juda.

Zwanzig Jahre war Achaz alt, als er zu herrschen begann, und sechzehn Jahre herrschte er in Jerusalem; er tat nicht, was in den Augen des Herrn, seines Gottes, wohlgefällig war, wie sein Vater David,

sondern wandelte auf dem Wege der Könige von Israel; ja, er weihte seinen Sohn, indem er ihn durch das Feuer gehen ließ, nach den götzendienerischen Brauche der Völker, welche der Herr vor den Söhnen Israels zerstreut hatte.

Auch brachte er Schlachtopfer dar und zündete Räucherwerk auf den Höhen an und auf den Hügeln und unter jedem belaubten Baume.

Da zog Rasin, der König von Syrien, und Phakee, der Sohn Romelias, der König von Israel, gegen Jerusalem zum Kampfe herauf; sie schlossen Achaz ein, konnten ihn aber nicht überwinden.

Zu jener Zeit brachte Rasin, der König von Syrien, Aila wieder an Syrien und vertrieb die Juden aus Aila; da kamen die Edomiter nach Aila und nahmen daselbst Wohnung bis auf diesen Tag.

Achaz aber sandte Boten an Theglathphalasar, den König von Assyrien, und ließ ihm sagen: Ich bin dein Diener und dein Sohn; komm herauf, und rette mich aus der Hand des Königs von Syrien und aus der Hand des Königs von Israel, welche sich gegen mich erhoben haben.

Auch sammelte er das Silber und das Gold, welches im Hause des Herrn und in den Schätzen des Königs zu finden war, und sandte es als Geschenk an den König von Assyrien.

Dieser erfüllte seinen Wunsch: der König von Assyrien zog nämlich gegen Damaskus, verwüstete es und führte seine Einwohner nach Cyrene, Rasin aber tötete er.

(2. Chronik 28,16-27)

Und der König Achaz zog weg, Theglathphalasar, dem Könige der Assyrier entgegen nach Damaskus. Als er nun den Altar zu Damaskus sah, sandte der König Achaz an den Priester Urias den Abriss und eine Nachbildung von demselben, dem ganzen Bau entsprechend.

Und der Priester Urias errichtete einen Altar, ganz so wie der König Achaz von Damaskus der befohlen hatte, so tat Urias, der Priester, bis der König Achaz von Damaskus kam.

Als nun der König von Damaskus kam, besichtigte er den Altar und verehrte ihn, und er stieg hinauf und opferte Brandopfer und das Speiseopfer dazu

und goss Trankopfer aus und sprengte das Blut der Friedopfer, welche er dargebracht hatte, auf den Altar.

Den ehernen Altar aber, der vor dem Herrn stand, entfernte er von dem vorderen Teile des Tempels und von der Stelle des Altares und von dem Orte am Tempel des Herrn und setzte ihn auf die Seite des Altares gegen Norden.

Auch gebot der König Achaz dem Priester Urias und sprach: Auf dem größeren Altar opfere das Morgen-Brandopfer und das Abendopfer und das Brandopfer des Königs und dessen Speiseopfer und das Brandopfer alles Volkes des Landes und ihre Speiseopfer und ihre Trankopfer, und sprenge auf denselben alles Blut alles Blut der Brandopfer und alles Blut der Schlachtopfer, der eherne Altar aber soll zu meiner Verfügung bereit sein.

Der Priester Urias also tat allem gemäß, was der König Achaz befohlen hatte.

Und der König Achaz nahm die Fußgestelle mit erhabener Arbeit und das Becken, das darauf stand, hinweg und nahm das Meer von den ehernen Rindern, die es trugen, und setzte es auf den mit Steinen gepflasterten Boden.

Auch verlegte er das Musach des Sabbats, das er im Tempel gebaut hatte, und den äußeren Eingang des Königs in den Tempel des Herrn, des Königs von Assyrien wegen.

Was aber sonst noch von Achaz zu sagen ist, was er getan hat, steht das nicht geschrieben in den Jahrbüchern der Könige von Juda?

Und Achaz entschlief zu seinen Vätern und ward bei ihnen in der Davidsstadt begraben, sein Sohn Ezechias ward König an seiner Statt.
