- Kapitel 10 -

Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

Thus saith the Lord , Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.(a)

They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.

Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O Lord ; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.(b)

But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.(c)

Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

But the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.(d)

Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.

He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.(g)

Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.(i)

They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The Lord of hosts is his name.

The Coming Captivity of Judah

Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.(j)

For thus saith the Lord , Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.

Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.

My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the Lord : therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.

Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.

O Lord , I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

O Lord , correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.(k)

Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.

Götzen und der wahre Gott

Höret das Wort, welches der Herr über euch geredet hat, Haus Israel!

So spricht der Herr: Gewöhnet euch nicht an die Weise der Völker und erschrecket nicht vor den Zeichen des Himmels, vor denen die Völker sich fürchten!

Denn die Satzungen der Völker sind nichtig, man behaut einen Baum aus dem Walde und des Künstlers Hand richtet ein Werk daraus her mit der Axt.

Mit Silber und Gold verziert er es und festigt es mit Nagel und Hammer, damit es nicht aus den Fugen gehe.

Gedrechselt steht es da wie ein Palmenstamm und kann nicht reden; es muss getragen werden, denn es kann nicht gehen. Darum fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen, denn sie vermögen weder zu schaden noch zu nützen.

Herr! deinesgleichen ist nicht, du bist groß und groß ist dein Name in Macht!

Wer sollte dich nicht fürchten, du König der Völker? Denn dein ist die Herrlichkeit, unter allen Weisen der Völker und in allen ihren Reichen ist nicht deinesgleichen.

Sie erweisen sich allzumal als einfältig und töricht, denn die Unterweisung ihrer Nichtigkeit ist Holz.

Man bringt Silberblech aus Tharsis und Gold aus Ophaz, von den Künstlern gefertigt, von der Hand des Goldschmieds bereitet; blauer und roter Purpur ist ihr Gewand und all das ist der Kunstverständigen Werk.

Aber der Herr ist der wahre Gott, er ist der lebendige Gott, der ewige König; vor seinem Zorne erbebt die Erde und sein Dräuen vermögen die Völker nicht zu ertragen.

Darum saget also zu ihnen: Die Götter, welche Himmel und Erde nicht gemacht haben, mögen vertilgt werden von der Erde und unter dem Himmel.

Der die Erde erschaffen durch seine Kraft, den Erdkreis durch seine Weisheit gegründet und die Himmel durch seine Einsicht ausgespannt hat,

er lässt seine Stimme erschallen und es sammelt sich des Wassers Menge unter dem Himmel: er lässt Wolken aufsteigen vom Ende der Erde her, schafft Blitze zum Regen und führt den Wind aus seinen Vorratskammern hervor.

Toren ohne Einsicht sind alle Menschen und alle Künstler werden zuschanden werden an ihren Bildern; denn Trug ist, was sie gießen, und es ist kein Odem darin.

Eitel sind sie und Werke, des Verlachens würdig; zur Zeit ihrer Heimsuchung werden sie untergehen.

Nicht wie diese ist der, welcher Jakobs Anteil ist; denn er ist es, der alles geschaffen hat, und Israel ist der Stamm seines Erbes; Herr der Heerscharen ist sein Name.

Die kommende Gefangenschaft von Juda

Raffe von der Erde deinen Kram zusammen, du, die du von Belagerung umgeben wirst!

Denn so spricht der Herr: Siehe, ich werde die Einwohner des Landes dieses Mal weit fortschleudern und sie so bedrängen, dass keiner entrinnen kann.

Wehe mir ob meiner Verwunderung, unheilbar ist die Wunde, die mir geschlagen ward. Doch ich sprach: Das ist ja mein Leiden, so will ich es denn tragen!

Mein Gezelt ist zerstört, alle meine Seile sind zerrissen; meine Söhne sind von mir weggezogen und sind nicht mehr; niemand ist, der mein Gezelt wieder aufschlage und meine Decken aufspanne.

Denn die Hirten handelten töricht und suchten den Herrn nicht, darum hatten sie keine Einsicht und ihre ganze Herde wurde zerstreut.

Horch! Ein Ruf erschallt und ein Sturmesbrausen naht aus dem Lande gegen Norden, um die Städte Judas zur Einöde zu machen, zur Wohnung der Drachen.

Ich weiß, Herr! dass des Menschen Weg nicht in seiner Gewalt steht und dass es in niemandes Macht ist, wie er wandle und seine Schritte lenke.

Züchtige mich also, o Herr! nur nach Recht und nicht nach deinem Grimme, auf dass du mich nicht etwa vernichtest.

Gieße deinen Zorn über die Völker aus, welche dich nicht kennen, und über die Länder, welche deinen Namen nicht anrufen; denn sie haben Jakob verzehrt und ihn verschlungen, sie haben ihn vernichtet und seine Herrlichkeit verwüstet.
