- Kapitel 7 -

Haman is hanged instead of Mordecai

So the king and Haman came to banquet with Esther the queen.(a)

And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.

Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:

For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king’s damage.(b)

Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?(c)

And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.(d)

And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.

Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered Haman’s face.(f)

And Harbonah, one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made for Mordecai, who had spoken good for the king, standeth in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him thereon.(g)

So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king’s wrath pacified.

Der König trat also mit Aman ein, um mit der Königin das Mahl zu halten.

Und der König sprach zu ihr auch am zweiten Tage, nachdem er vom Weine erhitzt war: Welches ist dein Begehren, Esther, dass es dir zuteil werde? Und was willst du, dass geschehe? Wenn du auch die Hälfte meines Reiches begehrst, wirst du sie erhalten!

Sie antwortete ihm: Habe ich Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden, o König! und gefällt es dir, schenke mir mein Leben, um welches ich bitte, und mein Volk, für das ich flehe.

Denn ich und mein Volk, wir sind preisgegeben, dass wir zertreten, getötet und vertilgt werden. Ja, würden wir nur als Knechte und Mägde verkauft, so wäre das Übel erträglich und ich würde seufzend schweigen; nun aber haben wir einen Feind, dessen Grausamkeit auf den König zurückfällt.

Da antwortete der König Assuerus und sprach: Wer ist der und was für eine Gewalt hat er, dass er es wagt, dies zu tun?

Esther sprach: Unser Feind und Widersacher ist dieser Bösewicht Aman hier! Als dieser solches hörte, ward er alsbald starr vor Schrecken und unvermögend, den Anblick des Königs und der Königin zu ertragen.

Der König aber stand voller Zorn auf und ging von dem Orte des Mahles in den Baumgarten. Auch Aman erhob sich, um die Königin Esther um sein Leben anzuflehen; denn er sah ein, das ihm Böses von dem Könige bevorstehe.

Als dieser nun aus dem Baumgarten an den Ort zurückkehrte, wo das Gastmahl statthatte, fand er Aman auf das Lagerpolster niedergesunken, auf dem Esther Platz genommen hatte, und sprach: Auch der Königin will er Gewalt antun, in meiner Gegenwart, in meinem Hause! Kaum war das Wort aus des Königs Munde gegangen, so verhüllte man ihm alsbald das Gesicht.

Und Harbona, einer von den Kämmerern, die vor dem Könige Dienste taten, sprach: Siehe, es steht im Hause Amans ein Balken, fünfzig Ellen hoch, welchen er für Mardochäus hat herrichten lassen, der zum Heile für den König geredet hat. Da sprach der König zu ihm: Hänget ihn an demselben auf!

Aman also ward an den Galgen gehängt, den er für Mardochäus hatte herrichten lassen, und des Königs Zorn legte sich.
