- Kapitel 9 -

Death comes to the good and the bad

For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.(a)

All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

Enjoy your portion in this life

Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.(b)

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

Wisdom is better than strength

This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:

There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:

Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.

Der Tod kommt zu Guten und Bösen

Dies alles habe ich in meinem Herzen erwogen, um es genau zu verstehen. Es gibt Gerechte und Weise und ihre Werke sind in der Hand Gottes und doch weiß der Mensch nicht, ob er der Liebe oder des Hasses würdig ist,

sondern alles wird als ungewiss für die Zukunft aufbewahrt; denn gleichmäßig widerfährt dem Gerechten und dem Ungerechten alles, dem Guten und dem Bösen, dem Reinen und dem Unreinen, dem, der Opfer versäumt; wie dem Guten, so geht es dem Sünder; wie dem Meineidigen, so auch dem, welcher die Wahrheit beschwört.

Das ist das Schlimmste von allem, was unter der Sonne geschieht, dass alle dasselbe Geschick trifft; darum ist auch das Herz der Menschenkinder voll der Bosheit und des Verdrusses in ihrem Leben und hiernach werden sie zur Unterwelt hinweggeführt.

Niemand lebt immer und kann dies hoffen. Besser ist ein lebender Hund als ein toter Löwe.

Die Lebenden wissen doch, dass sie sterben müssen, aber die Toten wissen nichts mehr und haben weiter keinen Lohn, denn ihr Andenken ist der Vergessenheit überliefert.

Auch ihr Lieben und Hassen ist zumal dahingegangen und sie haben keinen Anteil mehr an dieser Welt und an allem, was unter der Sonne geschieht.

Genieße deinen Anteil an diesem Leben

So gehe denn hin und iss dein Brot mit frohem Sinn und trinke deinen Wein mit Freuden, denn dein Tun gefällt Gott wohl.

Deine Kleider seien allezeit glänzend weiß und deinem Haupte ermangle nie das Öl.

Genieße das Leben mit der Frau, die du liebst, alle Tage deines unbeständigen Lebens, die dir unter der Sonne gegeben sind, die ganze Zeit deines eitlen Seins; denn dies ist das, was du davon hast im Leben und bei deiner Mühsal, mit der du dich abmühest unter der Sonne.

Was immer deine Hand tun kann, tue eifrig; denn in der Unterwelt, der du zueilst, ist weder Wirken noch Sinnen noch Weisheit noch Wissenschaft.

Ich wendete mich etwas anderem zu und sah unter der Sonne, dass nicht dem Schnellen der Lauf gehört, nicht dem Helden der Kampf, nicht dem Weisen das Brot, nicht dem klug Berechnenden der Reichtum, nicht dem Kunstverständigen Gunst, sondern dass alles von Zeit und Zufall abhängt.

Der Mensch kennt sein Ende nicht, sondern wie die Fische mit der Angel gefangen werden und wie man die Vögel mit der Schlinge fängt, so werden die Menschen zur Zeit des Unglücks gefangen, wenn es plötzlich über sie hereinbricht.

Weisheit ist besser als Stärke

Auch das habe ich als Weisheit unter der Sonne erkannt und sie erschien mir sehr groß:

Es war eine kleine Stadt, in der nur wenig Menschen waren. Gegen diese kam ein großer König herangezogen und warf einen Wall um sie auf und baute Bollwerke ringsum und sie ward völlig umlagert.

Da fand sich darin ein armer, aber weiser Mann, dieser rettete die Stadt durch seine Weisheit; aber niemand gedachte darnach eines armen Menschen.

Und ich sprach: Besser ist Weisheit als Stärke, wie konnte man also die Weisheit des Armen verachten und seinen Worten nicht Gehör schenken?

Die Worte der Weisen in der Stille finden mehr Gehör als das Geschrei des Fürsten unter den Toren.

Besser ist Weisheit als Kriegswaffen und wer sich in einem Stücke verfehlt, richtet viel Gutes zugrunde.
