- Kapitel 5 -

Approaching God with reverence

Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.(a)

For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool’s voice is known by multitude of words.

When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.

Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.

Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?

For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.

The futility of wealth

(Psalm 49:1-20)

If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.(b)

Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field.

He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.

When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?

The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.

There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt.

But those riches perish by evil travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand.

As he came forth of his mother’s womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.

And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?

All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.

Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.(c)

Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.

For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.(e)

Sich Gott mit Ehrfurcht nähern

Rede nichts unbedachtsam und dein Herz übereile sich nicht, vor Gott ein Wort auszusprechen; denn Gott ist im Himmel und du bist auf Erden, darum lass deiner Worte wenige sein.

Auf viele Sorgen folgen Träume und in Vielreden findet sich Torheit.

Hast du Gott etwas gelobt, so säume nicht, es zu erfüllen; denn ein treuloses und törichtes Versprechen missfällt ihm; aber alles, was du gelobt hast, erfülle!

Viel besser ist es, kein Gelöbnis zu machen als zu geloben und das Versprochene nicht zu halten.

Lass deinen Mund nicht dein Fleisch zur Sünde verführen und sage nicht vor dem Engel: Es gibt keine Vorsehung! Gott möchte sonst über deine Reden zürnen und alle Werke deiner Hände vernichten.

Wo viele Träumereien sind, da sind auch der Eitelkeiten viele und endloses Geschwätz, du fürchte vielmehr Gott!

Siehst du die Unterdrückung der Armen und Vergewaltigung im Gerichte und Verkehrung der Gerechtigkeit in einem Lande, so wundere dich über eine solche Sache nicht; denn über dem Hohen steht ein anderer Höherer und über beiden stehen noch andere Höhere

Die Vergeblichkeit des Reichtums

(Psalm 49,1-20)

und überdies gebietet der König dem ganzen Lande, das ihm untertan ist.

Der Habgierige wird des Geldes nie satt und wer Reichtum liebt, hat keinen Gewinn davon; somit ist auch das Eitelkeit!

Wo viele Güter sind, sind auch viele, die davon zehren. Und welchen Nutzen hat der Besitzer, als dass er den Reichtum mit seinen Augen anschaut?

Süß ist der Schlaf dem Arbeitsamen, er mag wenig essen oder viel; aber die Sattheit des Reichen lässt diesen nicht ruhig schlafen.

Es ist auch ein anderes sehr arges Gebrechen, das ich unter der Sonne sah: Reichtümer aufbewahrt zum eigenen Schaden ihres Besitzers.

Denn es kommt ein großes Unglück und sie gehen verloren; zeugt er einen Sohn, so wird dieser in der größten Armut darben.

Wie er nackt aus dem Leibe seiner Mutter hervorgegangen ist, so wird er wieder hinweggehen und nichts von seiner Mühe mit sich nehmen.

Gewiss ein sehr herbes Leid: Wie er gekommen, so wird er wieder hinweggehen! Was nützt es ihm also, dass er sich in den Wind abgemüht hat?

Sein ganzes Leben hat er in Finsternis verzehrt unter vielen Sorgen, in Leid und Traurigkeit.

So habe ich denn als gut erfunden, dass der Mensch esse und trinke und Freude habe von seiner Arbeit, mit der er sich unter der Sonne abmüht die Zahl der Tage seines Lebens hindurch, welche ihm Gott verliehen hat; denn dies ist sein Anteil.

Ebenso jedem Menschen, dem Gott Reichtum und Habe und Besitz gegeben und ihn in Stand gesetzt hat, von ihnen zu essen und seinen Anteil zu genießen und sich zu freuen an seiner Arbeit, ist dies eine Gabe Gottes.

Denn ein solcher wird nicht viel an die Tage seines Lebens denken, weil Gott sein Herz mit Freuden erfüllt.
