- Kapitel 8 -

Then spake Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn: for the Lord hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years.

And the woman arose, and did after the saying of the man of God: and she went with her household, and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.

And it came to pass at the seven years’ end, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines: and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land.

And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that Elisha hath done.

And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life, that, behold, the woman, whose son he had restored to life, cried to the king for her house and for her land. And Gehazi said, My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life.

And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed unto her a certain officer, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.(a)

Hazael Murders Ben-hadad

And Elisha came to Damascus; and Ben–hadad the king of Syria was sick; and it was told him, saying, The man of God is come hither.

And the king said unto Hazael, Take a present in thine hand, and go, meet the man of God, and enquire of the Lord by him, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?

So Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ burden, and came and stood before him, and said, Thy son Ben–hadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?(b)

And Elisha said unto him, Go, say unto him, Thou mayest certainly recover: howbeit the Lord hath shewed me that he shall surely die.

And he settled his countenance stedfastly, until he was ashamed: and the man of God wept.(c)

And Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child.

And Hazael said, But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great thing? And Elisha answered, The Lord hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria.

So he departed from Elisha, and came to his master; who said to him, What said Elisha to thee? And he answered, He told me that thou shouldest surely recover.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that he took a thick cloth, and dipped it in water, and spread it on his face, so that he died: and Hazael reigned in his stead.

Jehoram Reigns in Judah

(2 Chronicles 21:1–7)

And in the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah began to reign.(d)

Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as did the house of Ahab: for the daughter of Ahab was his wife: and he did evil in the sight of the Lord .

Yet the Lord would not destroy Judah for David his servant’s sake, as he promised him to give him alway a light, and to his children.(e)

Edom and Libnah Rebel

(2 Chronicles 21:8–11)

In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah, and made a king over themselves.

So Joram went over to Zair, and all the chariots with him: and he rose by night, and smote the Edomites which compassed him about, and the captains of the chariots: and the people fled into their tents.

Yet Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. Then Libnah revolted at the same time.

And the rest of the acts of Joram, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

And Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.(f)

Ahaziah Reigns in Judah

(2 Chronicles 22:1–7)

In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel did Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah begin to reign.

Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah, the daughter of Omri king of Israel.(g)

And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the Lord , as did the house of Ahab: for he was the son in law of the house of Ahab.

And he went with Joram the son of Ahab to the war against Hazael king of Syria in Ramoth–gilead; and the Syrians wounded Joram.

And king Joram went back to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him at Ramah, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick.(h)

Der König gibt der Shunammitin ihr Land zurück

Eliseus aber redete zu der Frau, deren Sohn er lebendig gemacht hatte, und sprach: Mache dich auf und gehe mit deiner Familie fort und weile, wo du eine Stätte finden wirst; denn der Herr hat den Hunger herbeigerufen und dieser wird über das Land kommen sieben Jahre hindurch.

Da machte sie sich auf und tat nach dem Worte des Mannes Gottes und ging mit ihrer Familie aus dem Lande der Philister geraume Zeit.

Als aber die sieben Jahre zu Ende waren, kehrte die Frau aus dem Lande der Philister zurück und ging, den König wegen ihres Hauses und ihrer Äcker anzurufen.

Der König aber redete gerade mit Giezi, dem Diener des Mannes Gottes, und sprach: Erzähle mir alle die großen Taten, welche Eliseus verrichtet hat.

Als er nun dem Könige erzählte, wie jener einen Toten erweckt hatte, erschien die Frau, deren Sohn er wieder lebendig gemacht hatte, und rief den König wegen ihres Hauses und ihrer Äcker an. Da sprach Giezi: Mein Herr und König! dies ist die Frau und dies ist ihr Sohn, den Eliseus wieder erweckt hat.

Darauf fragte der König die Frau und sie erzählte es ihm. Da gab ihr der König einen Kämmerer mit und sprach: Stelle ihr alles zurück, was ihr gehört, und die gesamten Erzeugnisse ihrer Äcker von dem Tage an, wo sie das Land verließ, bis jetzt.

Tod von Ben-Hadad

Einst kam Eliseus nach Damaskus, Benadad aber, der König von Syrien, war krank; da berichtete man ihm und sprach: Der Mann Gottes ist hierher gekommen!

Der König sprach zu Hazael: Nimm Geschenke mit dir, gehe dem Manne Gottes entgegen und befrage den Herrn durch ihn und sprich: Werde ich von dieser meiner Krankheit wieder aufkommen können?

Hazael also ging ihm entgegen und hatte Geschenke bei sich und allerlei Kostbarkeiten von Damaskus, eine Ladung von vierzig Kamelen. Als er nun vor Eliseus getreten war, sprach er: Dein Sohn Benadad, der König von Syrien, sendet mich zu dir und lässt sagen: Werde ich von dieser meiner Krankheit genesen können?

Eliseus sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin und sage ihm: Du wirst genesen; ferner hat der Herr mir kundgegeben, dass er sterben wird.

Und er stand bei ihm und ward starr bis zur Entstellung des Angesichts und der Mann Gottes weinte.

Da sprach Hazael zu ihm: Warum weint mein Herr? Er aber sprach: Weil ich weiß, was du den Söhnen Israels Böses tun wirst. Ihre festen Städte wirst du mit Feuer verbrennen, ihre Jünglinge mit dem Schwerte töten, ihre Kinder zerschmettern und die Schwangeren aufschneiden.

Hazael sprach: Was bin ich, dein Diener, ein Hund, dass ich so große Dinge tun sollte? Eliseus antwortete: Der Herr hat mir kundgegeben, dass du König von Syrien werden wirst.

Hierauf ging er von Eliseus weg und kam zu seinem Herrn. Dieser sprach zu ihm: Was hat dir Eliseus gesagt? Er antwortete: Er hat mir gesagt: Du wirst die Gesundheit wieder erlangen.

Als aber der andere Tag kam, nahm Hazael eine Decke, goss Wasser darauf und breitete sie über das Angesicht des Königs; und als dieser starb, ward Hazael König an seiner Statt.

Jehoram regiert in Juda

(2. Chronik 21,1-7)

Im fünften Jahre Jorams, des Sohnes Achabs, des Königs von Israel, und Josaphats, des Königs von Juda, ward Joram, der Sohn Josaphats, König von Juda.

Er war zweiunddreißig Jahre alt, als er zu herrschen begann, und herrschte acht Jahre in Jerusalem.

Er wandelte auf den Wegen der Könige von Israel, wie das Haus Achabs gewandelt war, denn die Tochter Achabs war sein Weib, und er tat, was in den Augen des Herrn böse ist.

Der Herr aber wollte Juda nicht verderben, um seines Dieners David willen, wie er ihm verheißen hatte, dass er ihm und seinen Söhnen allzeit eine Leuchte geben werde.

(2. Chronik 21,8-11)

Zu seiner Zeit fielen die Edomiter ab, um nicht unter Juda zu stehen, und setzten einen König über sich.

Da kam Joram nach Seira und alle Wagen mit ihm; und er machte sich des Nachts auf und schlug die Edomiter, die ihn umringt hatten, und die Obersten der Wagen, das Volk aber floh in seine Hütten.

So fielen die Edomiter ab, um nicht mehr Juda untertan zu sein, bis auf den heutigen Tag. Damals fiel auch Lobna ab.

Was aber sonst von Joram zu sagen ist, und alles, was er getan hat, ist das nicht in den Jahrbüchern der Könige von Juda beschrieben?

Und Joram entschlief zu seinen Vätern, und wurde bei ihnen in der Davidsstadt begraben und Ochozias, sein Sohn, ward König an seiner Statt.

Ahasja regiert in Juda

(2. Chronik 22,1-7)

Im zwölften Jahre Jorams, des Sohnes Achabs, des Königs von Israel, wurde Ochozias, der Sohn Jorams, des Königs von Juda, König.

Zweiundzwanzig Jahre war Ochozias alt, als er zu herrschen begann, und ein Jahr herrschte er in Jerusalem; der Name seiner Mutter war Athalia, eine Tochter Amris, des Königs von Israel.

Er wandelte auf den Wegen des Hauses Achabs und tat, was vor dem Herrn böse ist, wie das Haus Achabs; denn er war der Schwiegersohn des Hauses Achabs.

Er zog auch mit Joram, dem Sohne Achabs, in den Krieg gegen Hazael, den König von Syrien, bei Ramoth Galaad, und die Syrer verwundeten Joram.

Da kehrte dieser um, um in Jezrahel geheilt zu werden, denn die Syrer hatten ihn bei Ramoth verwundet, als er gegen Hazael, den König von Syrien, kämpfte. Ochozias aber, der Sohn Jorams, der König von Juda, zog hinab, Joram, den Sohn Achabs, in Jezrahel zu besuchen, weil er daselbst krank lag.
