- Kapitel 19 -

(Isaiah 37:1–7)

And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord .

And he sent Eliakim, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.(a)

It may be the Lord thy God will hear all the words of Rab–shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the Lord thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are left.(b)

So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the Lord , Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

Sennacherib’s Blasphemous Letter

(Isaiah 37:8–13)

So Rab–shakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah, saying,

Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?

Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed; as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Thelasar?

Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivah?

Hezekiah’s Prayer

(Isaiah 37:14–20)

And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the Lord , and spread it before the Lord .

And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord , and said, O Lord God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.

Lord , bow down thine ear, and hear: open, Lord , thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.

Of a truth, Lord , the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,

And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.(c)

Now therefore, O Lord our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord God, even thou only.

Sennacherib’s Fall Prophesied

(Isaiah 37:21–35)

Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.

This is the word that the Lord hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel.(d)

I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places.(g)

Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste fenced cities into ruinous heaps.(h)

Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.(i)

But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.(j)

Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.

And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.(k)

For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the Lord of hosts shall do this.(l)

Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.

By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the Lord .

For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.

Jerusalem Delivered from the Assyrians

(2 Chronicles 32:20–23; Isaiah 37:36–38)

And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.

And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.(m)

Jesaja sichert Befreiung zu

(Jesaja 37,1-7)

Als der König Ezechias diese Worte vernahm, zerriss er seine Kleider, legte ein härenes Gewand an und ging in das Haus des Herrn.

Eliakim aber, den Vorsteher des Hauses, und Sobna, den Schreiber, und die Ältesten der Priester sandte er, in härene Gewänder gehüllt, zu dem Propheten Isaias, dem Sohne Amos.

Diese sprachen: So spricht Ezechias: Ein Tag der Trübsal und der Züchtigung und der Lästerung ist dieser Tag; die Kinder sind bis zur Geburt gekommen und die Gebärende hat keine Kräfte.

Der Herr, dein Gott, hört alle Worte Rabsakes, welchen der König von Assyrien, sein Herr, gesandt, um den lebendigen Gott zu lästern und mit Worten zu schmähen, die der Herr, dein Gott, gehört hat; so verrichte denn ein Gebet für den Überrest, der sich vorfindet.

Die Diener des Königs Ezechias kamen also zu Isaias.

Isaias sprach zu ihnen: Saget euerm Herrn dies: So spricht der Herr: Fürchte dich nicht vor den Worten, welche du gehört hast, mit denen mich die Diener des Königs von Assyrien gelästert haben.

Siehe, ich werde ihm einen Geist zusenden, dass er ein Gerücht hört und in sein Land zurückkehrt, und ich werde ihn in seinem Lande durch das Schwert fallen lassen.

Sennacheribs Drohung und Hiskias Gebet

(Jesaja 37,8-13)

Rabsakes also kehrte zurück und fand den König von Assyrien gegen Lobna kämpfend; denn er hatte gehört, dass er von Lachis abgezogen war.

Als er nun von Tharaka, dem Könige von Äthiopien, sagen hörte: Siehe, er ist ausgezogen, um gegen dich zu kämpfen, und da dieser gegen ihn zog, sandte er Boten zu Ezechias und sprach zu ihnen:

So saget zu Ezechias, dem Könige von Juda: Lass dich nicht von deinem Gott, auf den du Vertrauen setzest, betören und sage nicht: Jerusalem wird nicht in die Hände des Königs von Assyrien überliefert werden.

Denn du hast selbst gehört, was die Könige von Assyrien allen Ländern angetan haben, wie sie dieselben verheert haben; solltest du also etwa allein gerettet werden können?

Haben denn die Götter der Völker alle diejenigen errettet, welche meine Väter vernichteten, Gozan nämlich, Haran, Reseph und die Söhne Edens, welche in Thelassar waren?

Wo ist der König von Emath und der König von Arphad und der König der Stadt Sepharvaim, Ana und Ava?

(Jesaja 37,14-20)

Als Ezechias den Brief aus der Hand der Boten genommen und gelesen hatte, ging er in das Haus des Herrn hinauf, breitete ihn vor dem Herrn aus

und betete vor seinem Angesichte und sprach: Herr, du Gott Israels! der du über den Cherubim schwebst, du bist allein Gott über alle Könige auf Erden, du hast Himmel und Erde erschaffen.

Neige dein Ohr und höre; öffne, Herr, deine Augen und siehe. Höre alle Worte Sennacheribs, welcher hergesandt hat, um den lebendigen Gott vor uns zu lästern.

In der Tat, Herr! haben die Könige von Assyrien die Völker und alle ihre Länder verheert

und haben ihre Götter ins Feuer geworfen; denn es waren keine Götter, sondern Gebilde von Menschenhänden aus Holz und Stein, darum haben sie dieselben vernichtet.

Nun also, Herr, unser Gott! rette uns aus seiner Hand, damit alle Reiche der Erde erkennen, dass du, der Herr, allein Gott bist.

Das Wort des HERRN über Sennacherib

(Jesaja 37,21-35)

Isaias aber, der Sohn des Amos, sandte zu Ezechias und ließ ihm sagen: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Um was du mich wegen Sennacherib, des Königs von Assyrien, gebeten hast, habe ich gehört.

Dies ist der Ausspruch, welchen der Herr über ihn getan hat: Es verachtet dich und es spottet deiner die Jungfrau, die Tochter Sion; hinter dir her schüttelt das Haupt die Tochter Jerusalem!

Wem hast du Hohn gesprochen und wen hast du gelästert? Gegen wen hast du deine Stimme erhoben und deine Augen zur Höhe erhoben? Gegen den Heiligen Israels!

Durch deine Diener hast du den Herrn gelästert und gesagt: Mit der Menge meiner Wagen ersteige ich die Höhen der Berge, die höchste Höhe des Libanon, und ich fälle seine hohen Zedern und seine auserlesenen Tannen. Ich dringe bis an seine Grenzen und haue um den Wald seines Karmels.

Und ich trinke fremde Wasser, mit den Tritten meiner Füße trockne ich alle verschlossenen Wasser.

Hast du denn nicht gehört, was ich von Anbeginn an getan habe? Seit den Zeiten der Vorzeit habe ich es vorbereitet und nun habe ich es herbeigeführt, und die festen Städte der Kämpfenden werden zu Wüsten werden.

Ihre Bewohner bebten in ihrer Ohnmacht und wurden zu Schanden; sie wurden wie Heu des Feldes und wie auf den Dächern wachsendes Gras, das verdorrt, ehe es zur Reife kommt.

Dein Wohnen, deinen Ausgang und deinen Eingang und deinen Weg und dein Toben gegen mich habe ich vorher gewusst.

Du hast gegen mich gerast und dein Übermut ist zu meinen Ohren emporgedrungen, darum werde ich dir einen Ring durch die Nase ziehen und einen Zaum an die Lippen legen und dich zurückführen auf dem Wege, auf dem du gekommen bist.

Dir aber, Ezechias, soll dies zum Zeichen sein: In diesem Jahre iss, was du findest; im zweiten Jahre, was von selber wächst; im dritten Jahre aber säet und erntet, pflanzet Weinberge und genießet ihre Frucht.

Und was dann immer vom Hause Juda übrig sein wird, soll unten Wurzel schlagen und oben Früchte tragen;

denn von Jerusalem wird was noch übrig ist, ausgehen, und was gerettet wird, vom Berge Sion. Der Eifer des Herrn der Heerscharen wird dies tun.

Darum spricht der Herr also über den König von Assyrien: Er soll nicht in diese Stadt kommen noch einen Pfeil in dieselbe schießen, noch soll ein Schild vor ihr erhoben werden noch ein Wall sie umschließen.

Auf dem Wege, auf dem er gekommen, soll er zurückkehren und in diese Stadt soll er nicht eindringen, spricht der Herr.

Und ich werde diese Stadt beschützen und sie retten um meinetwillen und um meines Dieners Davids willen.

Sennacheribs Niederlage und Tod

(2. Chronik 32,20-23; Jesaja 37,36-38)

Da geschah es in jener Nacht, dass der Engel des Herrn kam und im Lager das Assyrer hundert und fünfundachtzigtausend Mann erschlug. Als nun jener sich des Morgens erhob, sah er alle Leichen der Gestorbenen; da brach er auf und zog davon.

So kehrte Sennacherib, der König von Assyrien, heim und blieb in Ninive.

Als er aber im Tempel des Nesroch seinen Gott anbetete, erschlugen ihn Adramelech und Sarasar, seine Söhne, mit dem Schwerte und flohen in das Land der Armenier und sein Sohn Asarhaddon ward König an seiner Statt.
