- Kapitel 13 -

In the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah king of Judah Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned seventeen years.(a)

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord , and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.(b)

And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Ben–hadad the son of Hazael, all their days.

And Jehoahaz besought the Lord , and the Lord hearkened unto him: for he saw the oppression of Israel, because the king of Syria oppressed them.

(And the Lord gave Israel a saviour, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians: and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents, as beforetime.(c)

Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who made Israel sin, but walked therein: and there remained the grove also in Samaria.)(d)

Neither did he leave of the people to Jehoahaz but fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Syria had destroyed them, and had made them like the dust by threshing.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria: and Joash his son reigned in his stead.(f)

Jehoash Reigns in Israel

In the thirty and seventh year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen years.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord ; he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel sin: but he walked therein.

And the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and his might wherewith he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

And Joash slept with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat upon his throne: and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

Elisha’s Final Prophecy

Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died. And Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over his face, and said, O my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof.

And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows. And he took unto him bow and arrows.

And he said to the king of Israel, Put thine hand upon the bow. And he put his hand upon it: and Elisha put his hands upon the king’s hands.(g)

And he said, Open the window eastward. And he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he said, The arrow of the Lord’s deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria: for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.

And he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed.

And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.

And Elisha died, and they buried him. And the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year.

And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.(h)

But Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.

And the Lord was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet.(i)

So Hazael king of Syria died; and Ben–hadad his son reigned in his stead.

And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Ben–hadad the son of Hazael the cities, which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did Joash beat him, and recovered the cities of Israel.(j)

Joahas regiert in Israel

Im dreiundzwanzigsten Jahre des Joas, des Sohnes Ochozias, des Königs von Juda, ward Joachaz, der Sohn Jehus, König über Israel in Samaria, siebzehn Jahre.

Er tat, was vor dem Herrn böse ist, und folgte den Sünden Jeroboams, des Sohnes Nabats, nach, welcher Israel zur Sünde verführt hatte, und ließ nicht davon ab.

Da ergrimmte der Zorn des Herrn gegen Israel und er gab sie in die Hand Hazaels, des Königs von Syrien, und in die Hand Benadads, des Sohnes Hazaels, die ganze Zeit hindurch.

Joachaz aber flehte vor dem Angesichte des Herrn um Erbarmen und der Herr erhörte ihn, denn er sah die Bedrängnis Israels, dass der König von Syrien sie bedrückte,

und der Herr gab Israel einen Retter, es ward aus der Hand des Königs von Syrien befreit und die Söhne Israels wohnten in ihren Hütten wie gestern und vordem.

Dennoch aber ließen sie nicht von den Sünden des Hauses Jeroboams ab, welcher Israel zur Sünde verführt hatte, sondern wandelten in denselben, denn auch der Hain blieb zu Samaria stehen.

Es blieben Joachaz vom Volke nur fünfzig Reiter und zehn Wagen und zehntausend Mann Fußvolk übrig, denn der König von Syrien hatte sie getötet und wie Staub auf der Dreschtenne zertreten.

Was aber sonst von Joachaz zu sagen ist und alles, was er getan, und seine Tapferkeit, ist das nicht geschrieben in den Jahrbüchern der Könige von Israel?

Und Joachaz entschlief zu seinen Vätern und man begrub ihn in Samaria, sein Sohn Joas ward König an seiner Statt.

Joasch regiert in Israel

Im siebenunddreißigsten Jahre des Joas, des Königs von Juda, ward Joas, der Sohn des Joachaz, König über Israel in Samaria, sechzehn Jahre;

er tat, was in den Augen des Herrn böse ist, er ließ nicht ab von allen Sünden Jeroboams, des Sohnes Nabats, welcher Israel zur Sünde verführt hatte, sondern wandelte in denselben.

Was aber sonst von Joas zu sagen ist und alles, was er getan, und seine Tapferkeit, wie er mit Amasias, dem König von Juda, kämpfte, ist das nicht geschrieben in den Jahrbüchern der Könige von Israel?

Und Joas entschlief zu seinen Vätern; Jeroboam aber bestieg seinen Thron. Und Joas wurde in Samaria bei den Königen von Israel begraben.

Tod von Elischa

Eliseus aber ward von einer Krankheit ergriffen, an der er auch starb. Da ging Joas, der König von Israel, zu ihm hinab und weinte vor ihm und sprach: Mein Vater, mein Vater! Wagen Israels und sein Lenker!

Eliseus aber sprach zu ihm: Bringe einen Bogen und Pfeile herbei! Als dieser ihm einen Bogen und Pfeile gebracht hatte,

sprach er zu dem Könige von Israel: Lege deine Hand an den Bogen! Als dieser seine Hand daran gelegt hatte, legte Eliseus seine Hände auf die Hände des Königs

und sprach: Öffne das Fenster gegen Osten! Als er geöffnet hatte, sprach Eliseus: Schieße einen Pfeil ab. Dieser schoss ihn ab. Da sprach Eliseus: Ein Pfeil des Heiles des Herrn und ein Pfeil des Heiles gegen Syrien; du wirst die Syrier in Aphek schlagen, bis du sie aufreibst.

Dann sprach er: Nimm die Pfeile! Als dieser sie genommen, sprach er wiederum zu ihm: Schlage mit dem Pfeile auf die Erde! Jener schlug dreimal und hielt dann inne.

Da ward der Mann Gottes über ihn zornig und sprach: Hättest du fünf- oder sechs- oder siebenmal geschlagen, so würdest du Syrien bis zur Vernichtung geschlagen haben, nun aber wirst du es dreimal schlagen.

Hierauf starb Eliseus und sie begruben ihn. Es kamen aber Raubscharen von Moab ins Land in eben diesem Jahre.

Einige, die einen Mann begruben, sahen die Raubscharen und warfen den Leichnam in das Grab des Eliseus. Als dieser die Gebeine des Eliseus berührte, ward der Mann wieder lebendig und stellte sich auf seine Füße.

Israel erobert Städte von Syrien zurück

Hazael nun, der König von Syrien, bedrückte Israel, so lange Joachaz lebte;

doch der Herr erbarmte sich über sie und wandte sich ihnen wieder zu, um seines Bundes mit Abraham, Isaak und Jakob willen, und er wollte sie nicht verderben noch gänzlich verwerfen bis auf diese Zeit.

Aber Hazael, der König von Syrien, starb und Benadad, sein Sohn, ward König an seiner Statt.

Da entriss Joas, der Sohn des Joachaz, der Hand Benadads, des Sohnes Hazaels, die Städte, welche er der Hand Joachaz, seines Vaters, kraft Kriegsrechtes entrissen hatte; dreimal schlug ihn Joas und brachte so die Städte an Israel zurück.
