(2 Kings 23:31–35)

Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father’s stead in Jerusalem.

Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem.

And the king of Egypt put him down at Jerusalem, and condemned the land in an hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.(a)

And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and turned his name to Jehoiakim. And Necho took Jehoahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt.

Jehoiakim Reigns in Judah

(2 Kings 23:36–37)

Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord his God.

Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.(b)

Nebuchadnezzar also carried of the vessels of the house of the Lord to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead.(c)

Jehoiachin Reigns in Judah

(2 Kings 24:6–9)

Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord .

And when the year was expired, king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of the Lord , and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.(d)

Zedekiah Reigns in Judah

(2 Kings 24:18–20; Jeremiah 52:1–3)

Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and reigned eleven years in Jerusalem.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord his God, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the Lord .

And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning unto the Lord God of Israel.

Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the Lord which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.

The Fall of Jerusalem

(2 Kings 25:1–7)

And the Lord God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:(g)

But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy.(i)

Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.

And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the Lord , and the treasures of the king, and of his princes; all these he brought to Babylon.

And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.

And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:(j)

To fulfil the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.

The Proclamation of Cyrus

(Ezra 1:1–4; Isaiah 45:1–25)

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the Lord God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The Lord his God be with him, and let him go up.

Die Herrschaft und Gefangenschaft von Joahas

(2. Könige 23,31-35)

Hierauf nahm das Volk des Landes Joachaz, den Sohn des Josias, und machte ihn an seines Vaters Statt zum Könige von Jerusalem.

Dreiundzwanzig Jahre war Joachaz alt, als er König ward, und drei Monate herrschte er in Jerusalem.

Der König von Ägypten aber setzte ihn ab, als er nach Jerusalem kam, und belegte das Land mit einer Buße von hundert Talenten Silber und einem Talent Gold.

An seiner Statt machte er seinen Bruder Eliakim zum Könige über Juda und Jerusalem und wandelte seinen Namen in Joakim, Joachaz aber nahm er mit sich und führte ihn nach Ägypten fort.

Die Herrschaft und Gefangenschaft Jojakims

(2. Könige 23,36-37)

Fünfundzwanzig Jahre war Joakim alt, als er König ward, und elf Jahre herrschte er in Jerusalem; er tat, was vor dem Herrn, seinem Gott, böse war.

Gegen ihn zog Nabuchodonosor, der König der Chaldäer, heran, warf ihn in Ketten und führte ihn nach Babylon.

Dorthin brachte er auch die Geräte des Herrn und setzte sie in seinen Tempel.

Die übrige Geschichte Joakims aber und seine Greuel, die er verübt, und was an ihm erfunden ward, das ist im Buche der Könige von Juda und Israel enthalten. Sein Sohn Joachin aber ward König an seiner Statt.

Die Herrschaft und Gefangenschaft Jojachins

(2. Könige 24,6-9)

Acht Jahre war Joachin alt, als er König ward, und drei Monate und zehn Tage herrschte er in Jerusalem; er tat, was vor dem Angesichte des Herrn böse war.

Als aber ein Jahr um war, sandte der König Nabochodonosor hin und ließ ihn nach Babylon führen, indem er zugleich die kostbarsten Geräte des Hauses des Herrn dorthin brachte; zum Könige aber über Juda und Jerusalem setzte er Sedekias, seines Vaters Bruder, ein.

Zedekia regiert in Juda

(2. Könige 24,18-20; Jeremia 52,1-3)

Einundzwanzig Jahre war Sedekias alt, als er König ward, und elf Jahre herrschte er in Jerusalem.

Er tat, was in den Augen des Herrn, seines Gottes, böse war, und hatte keine Scheu vor dem Angesichte Jeremias, des Propheten, der aus dem Munde des Herrn zu ihm redete.

Er fiel auch vom Könige Nabuchodonosor ab, der ihn bei Gott hatte schwören lassen, und er war halsstarrig und verhärtete sein Herz, so dass er nicht zu dem Herrn, dem Gott Israels, zurückkehrte.

Ebenso sündigten alle Obersten der Priester und das Volk schwer nach allen Greueln der Völker und verunreinigten das Haus des Herrn, welches er sich in Jerusalem geheiligt hatte.

Der Fall von Jerusalem

(2. Könige 25,1-7)

Der Herr aber, der Gott ihrer Väter, sandte zu ihnen durch seine Boten, früh und fortwährend mahnend, weil er seines Volkes und seiner Wohnung schonte.

Sie aber verhöhnten die Boten Gottes und verachteten ihre Worte und spotteten der Propheten, bis der Grimm des Herrn über sein Volk derart wuchs, dass keine Heilung mehr war.

Denn er ließ den König der Chaldäer über sie kommen und tötete ihre Jünglinge im Hause seines Heiligtums mit dem Schwerte und verschonte nicht Jüngling, nicht Jungfrau, nicht des Greises, ja nicht des Hochbetagten, sondern gab sie alle in seine Hände.

Auch alle Gerätschaften des Hauses des Herrn, die großen wie die kleinen, sowie die Schätze des Tempels, des Königs und der Fürsten führte er nach Babylon.

Und die Feinde zündeten das Haus Gottes an, rissen die Mauern von Jerusalem nieder, verbrannten alle Türme und zerstörten alles, was wertvoll war.

Wer dem Schwerte entrann, ward nach Babylon geführt, in die Knechtschaft des Königs und seiner Söhne, bis der König der Perser zur Herrschaft kam,

und der Ausspruch des Herrn aus dem Munde des Jeremias erfüllt wurde, und das Land seine Sabbate gefeiert hatte; denn die ganze Zeit, die es verwüstet lag, hielt es Sabbat, bis siebzig Jahre voll waren.

Die Proklamation von Kyrus

(Esra 1,1-4; Jesaja 45,1-25)

Im ersten Jahre des Cyrus aber, des Königs der Perser, erweckte der Herr, um das Wort des Herrn zu erfüllen, das er durch den Mund des Jeremias geredet hatte, den Geist des Cyrus, des Königs von Persien, dass er in seinem ganzen Reiche ausrufen und durch Schrift bekannt machen ließ:

So spricht Cyrus, der König der Perser: Alle Reiche der Erde hat mir der Herr, der Gott des Himmels, gegeben und er hat mir befohlen, ihm ein Haus in Jerusalem, das in Judäa ist, zu bauen. Wer ist unter euch von seinem ganzen Volke? Der Herr sein Gott sei mit ihm und er ziehe hin!
