- Kapitel 3 -

Judas Machabeus succeeds his father, and overthrows Apollonius and Seron. A great army is sent against him out of Syria. He prepares his people for battle by fasting and prayer.

Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead.

And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel.

So he gat his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and he made battles, protecting the host with his sword.

In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion’s whelp roaring for his prey.

For He pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that vexed his people.

Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his hand.

He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and his memorial is blessed for ever.

Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel:

So that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he received unto him such as were ready to perish.

Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host out of Samaria, to fight against Israel.

Which thing when Judas perceived, he went forth to meet him, and so he smote him, and slew him: many also fell down slain, but the rest fled.

Wherefore Judas took their spoils, and Apollonius’ sword also, and therewith he fought all his life long.

Now when Seron, a prince of the army of Syria, heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war;

He said, I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom; for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him, who despise the king’s commandment.

So he made him ready to go up, and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him, and to be avenged of the children of Israel.

And when he came near to the going up of Bethhoron, Judas went forth to meet him with a small company:

Who, when they saw the host coming to meet them, said unto Judas, How shall we be able, being so few, to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day?

Unto whom Judas answered, It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few; and with the God of heaven it is all one, to deliver with a great multitude, or a small company:

For the victory of battle standeth not in the multitude of an host; but strength cometh from heaven.

They come against us in much pride and iniquity to destroy us, and our wives and children, and to spoil us:

But we fight for our lives and our laws.

Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: and as for you, be ye not afraid of them.

Now as soon as he had left off speaking, he leapt suddenly upon them, and so Seron and his host was overthrown before him.

And they pursued them from the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, where were slain about eight hundred men of them; and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines.

Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren, and an exceeding great dread, to fall upon the nations round about them:

Insomuch as his fame came unto the king, and all nations talked of the battles of Judas.

Now when king Antiochus heard these things, he was full of indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong army.

He opened also his treasure, and gave his soldiers pay for a year, commanding them to be ready whensoever he should need them.

Nevertheless, when he saw that the money of his treasures failed and that the tributes in the country were small, because of the dissension and plague, which he had brought upon the land in taking away the laws which had been of old time;

He feared that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer, nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before: for he had abounded above the kings that were before him.

Wherefore, being greatly perplexed in his mind, he determined to go into Persia, there to take the tributes of the countries, and to gather much money.

So he left Lysias, a nobleman, and one of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt:

And to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again.

Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces, and the elephants, and gave him charge of all things that he would have done, as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem:

To wit, that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memorial from that place;

And that he should place strangers in all their quarters, and divide their land by lot.

So the king took the half of the forces that remained, and departed from Antioch, his royal city, the hundred forty and seventh year; and having passed the river Euphrates, he went through the high countries.

Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king’s friends:

And with them he sent forty thousand footmen, and seven thousand horsemen, to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it, as the king commanded.

So they went forth with all their power, and came and pitched by Emmaus in the plain country.

And the merchants of the country, hearing the fame of them, took silver and gold very much, with servants, and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves: a power also of Syria and of the land of the Philistines joined themselves unto them.

Now when Judas and his brethren saw that miseries were multiplied, and that the forces did encamp themselves in their borders: for they knew how the king had given commandment to destroy the people, and utterly abolish them;

They said one to another, Let us restore the decayed fortune of our people, and let us fight for our people and the sanctuary.

Then was the congregation gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion.

Now Jerusalem lay void as a wilderness, there was none of her children that went in or out: the sanctuary also was trodden down, and aliens kept the strong hold; the heathen had their habitation in that place; and joy was taken from Jacob, and the pipe with the harp ceased.

Wherefore the Israelites assembled themselves together, and came to Maspha, over against Jerusalem; for in Maspha was the place where they prayed aforetime in Israel.

Then they fasted that day, and put on sackcloth, and cast ashes upon their heads, and rent their clothes,

And laid open the book of the law, wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images.

They brought also the priests’ garments, and the firstfruits, and the tithes: and the Nazarites they stirred up, who had accomplished their days.

Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them away?

For thy sanctuary is trodden down and profaned, and thy priests are in heaviness, and brought low.

And lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us: what things they imagine against us, thou knowest.

How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help?

Then sounded they with trumpets, and cried with a loud voice.

And after this Judas ordained captains over the people, even captains over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens.

But as for such as were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, those he commanded that they should return, every man to his own house, according to the law.

So the camp removed, and pitched upon the south side of Emmaus.

And Judas said, arm yourselves, and be valiant men, and see that ye be in readiness against the morning, that ye may fight with these nations, that are assembled together against us to destroy us and our sanctuary:

For it is better for us to die in battle, than to behold the calamities of our people and our sanctuary.

Nevertheless, as the will of God is in heaven, so let him do.

Judas Machabeus tritt die Nachfolge seines Vaters an und stürzt Apollonius und Seron. Ein großes Heer wird aus Syrien gegen ihn ausgesandt. Er bereitet sein Volk durch Fasten und Gebet auf die Schlacht vor

Hierauf trat Judas, genannt der Machabäer, sein Sohn, an seine Stelle.

Und alle seine Brüder halfen ihm, samt allen, welche sich seinem Vater angeschlossen hatten, und sie führten den Kampf Israels mit Freuden.

Und er schaffte seinem Volke weithin Ruhm und legte sich den Harnisch an wie ein Riese und umgürtete sich mit seinen Kriegswaffen im Kampfe und schützte das Heerlager mit seinem Schwerte.

Einem Löwen glich er in seinen Taten und war wie ein junger Löwe, der nach Beute brüllt.

Er spürte die Gottlosen auf und verfolgte sie, und die sein Volk beunruhigten, verbrannte er im Feuer.

Aus Schrecken vor ihm flohen seine Feinde, alle Übeltäter wurden bestürzt und die Rettung ward glücklich durch seine Hand vollbracht.

Vielen Königen verursachte er Kummer, Jakob aber erfreute er durch seine Taten und sein Andenken bleibt auf ewig in Segen.

Er durchzog die Städte Juda und vertilgte daraus die Gottlosen und wendete den Zorn von Israel ab.

Deshalb ward sein Name berühmt bis an das Ende der Erde und er sammelte die, welche dem Untergange nahe waren.

Apollionius aber sammelte die Heiden und ein zahlreiches und starkes Heer aus Samaria, um wider Israel zu kämpfen.

Da Judas dies erfuhr, zog er aus, ihm entgegen, und schlug ihn und tötete ihn und es fielen viele Verwundete, die übrigen aber flohen.

Da nahm Judas ihre Beute, auch das Schwert des Apollonius erbeutete er und kämpfte damit, so lange er lebte.

Als nun Seron, der Befehlshaber der Heeresmacht von Syrien, hörte, dass Judas eine Schar von Getreuen, eine Genossenschaft, um sich gesammelt habe,

sprach er: Ich will mir einen Namen schaffen und berühmt machen im Reiche und will Judas und seine Gefährten, welche den Befehl des Königs missachten, bekämpfen.

Und er rüstete sich und mit ihm zog ein Heer von Gottlosen heran, starke Helfer, um Rache an den Söhnen Israels zu nehmen.

Sie kamen bis nahe an Bethoron heran, von dort zog Judas ihnen mit wenigen Leuten entgegen.

Als diese das Heer gegen sich anrücken sahen, sprachen sie zu Judas: Wie werden wir, so gering an Zahl, wider eine so große und so mächtige Menge kämpfen können? Dazu sind wir heute von dem Fasten ermattet.

Da sprach Judas: Es ist leicht, dass viele in die Hand weniger übergeben werden, und vor dem Gott des Himmels macht es keinen Unterschied, durch viele oder durch wenige zu erretten;

denn nicht auf der Größe des Heeres beruht der Sieg im Kampfe, sondern vom Himmel kommt die Stärke.

Jene ziehen gegen uns mit einer trotzigen Schar voll Übermut heran, um uns, unsere Frauen und unsere Kinder zu vernichten und um uns auszuplündern;

wir aber wollen für unser Leben und für unsere Gesetze kämpfen

und der Herr selbst wird sie vor unsern Augen niederschmettern, darum fürchtet euch nicht vor ihnen!

Nachdem er so gesprochen, stürzte er plötzlich auf sie ein und Seron ward mit seinem Heere vor ihm aufgerieben.

Dann verfolgte er ihn am Abstiege von Bethoron bis in die Ebene und es fielen von jenen achthundert Mann, die übrigen aber flohen in das Philisterland.

Da befiel Furcht und Schrecken vor Judas und seinen Brüdern alle Völker ringsumher,

ja, sein Name kam bis vor den König und von den Schlachten des Judas erzählten alle Völker.

Als aber der König Antiochus diese Dinge erfuhr, ward er sehr zornig und er sandte aus und ließ das Heer seines ganzen Reiches sammeln, eine sehr gewaltige Heeresmacht.

Und er tat seine Schatzkammer auf und ließ seinem Heere auf ein Jahr Gold geben und befahl ihnen, zu allem bereit zu sein.

Als er aber sah, dass das Geld in seinem Schatze ausging und dass die Einkünfte des Landes spärlich wurden wegen des Aufruhrs und des Schadens, den er im Lande angerichtet hatte, um die Bräuche aufzuheben, welche von alters her in Übung waren,

geriet er in Furcht, er möchte, wie schon ein und das andere Mal, nichts für den Aufwand und die Geschenke haben, welche er zuvor mit freigebiger Hand gespendet, so dass er die Könige vor ihm übertraf.

Darüber sehr beunruhigt, beschloss er, nach Persien zu ziehen und von jenen Landschaften Abgaben zu erheben und viel Geld zusammenzubringen.

Den Lysias aber, einen angesehenen Mann aus königlichem Geblüte, ließ er für die Verwaltung des Reiches vom Euphratstrome bis an den Fluss Ägyptens zurück

und empfahl ihm, den Antiochus, seinen Sohn, zu erziehen, bis er zurückkehrte.

Auch übergab er ihm die Hälfte des Heeres und die Elefanten und gab ihm Weisung über alles, was er vorhatte, und über die Einwohner von Judäa und Jerusalem,

dass er gegen sie ein Heer entsenden sollte, um die Macht Israels und die Überbleibsel Jerusalems zu zermalmen und auszurotten und ihr Andenken von dieser Stätte zu vertilgen,

Fremde in ihr gesamtes Gebiet als Anwohner zu verpflanzen und ihr Land durch das Los zu verteilen.

Der König selbst aber nahm den übrigen Teil des Heeres und zog von Antiochia, der Hauptstadt seines Reiches, im hundertsiebenundvierzigsten Jahre fort, ging über den Euphratstrom und durchzog die obern Länder.

Lysias aber wählte den Ptolemäus, den Sohn des Doryminus, und Nikanor und Gorgias, mächtige Männer aus der Zahl der Freunde des Königs,

und sandte mit ihnen vierzigtausend Mann zu Fuß und siebentausend Mann zu Pferd, um in das Land Juda zu ziehen und es zu verheeren nach dem Befehle des Königs.

Diese rückten mit ihrer ganzen Streitmacht vor und zogen heran und lagerten sich bei Emmaus in der Ebene.

Als nun die Kaufleute jener Gegend von ihnen hörten, nahen sie Silber und Gold in großer Menge und Knechte und kamen in das Lager, um die Söhne Israel als Sklaven zu kaufen; und schloss sich ihnen ein Heer aus Syrien und dem Lande der Fremdlinge an.

Da aber Judas und seine Brüder sahen, dass das Unheil immer größer werde und dass die Heere sich ihrem Gebiete näherten, auch von dem Befehle des Königs erfuhren, der geboten, das Volk zu verderben und zu vernichten,

sprachen sie zueinander: Lasset uns unserem niedergebeugten Volke aufhelfen und für unser Volk und unser Heiligtum kämpfen!

Und die Schar sammelte sich, um bereit zu sein zum Streite, um zu beten und Erbarmen und Gnade zu erflehen.

Jerusalem aber war unbewohnt und einer Wüstenei gleich, keines ihrer Kinder ging mehr aus und ein und das Heiligtum war niedergetreten; Fremdlinge waren in der Burg, die eine Wohnstätte der Heiden war; hinweggenommen war die Freude von Jakob und verstummt daselbst Flöte und Zither.

Sie versammelten sich also und kamen nach Maspha, gegenüber von Jerusalem, denn in Maspha war ehedem eine Betstätte für Israel.

Und sie fasteten an jenem Tage, legten Bußgewänder an, streuten Asche auf ihr Haupt, zerrissen ihre Kleider

und breiteten das Gesetzbuch aus, in dem die Heiden etwas finden wollten, was Ähnlichkeit mit ihren Götzen hätte.

Auch brachten sie die Priesterkleider, die Erstlinge und Zehnten herbei, stellten die Nazaräer dar, welche ihre Zeit erfüllt hatten,

und riefen mit lauter Stimme zum Himmel und sprachen: Was sollen wir mit diesen beginnen und wohin sollen wir sie bringen?

Dein Heiligtum ist niedergetreten und entweiht und deine Priester sind in Trauer und Erniedrigung versetzt.

Siehe, die Heiden haben sich wider uns versammelt, um uns zu vertilgen, du weißt, was sie wider uns planen.

Wie sollen wir aber vor ihnen standhalten können, wenn nicht du, o Gott! uns hilfst?

Hierauf ließen sie die Trompeten mit großem Klange erschallen.

Darnach setzte Judas Anführer über das Volk, über tausend und über hundert und über fünfzig und über zehn.

Und er gebot denen, welche Häuser gebaut, sich ein Weib gefreit oder Weinberge gepflanzt hatten, oder die furchtsam seien, dass sie ein jeder in sein Haus zurückkehren sollten, dem Gesetze gemäß.

Alsdann brach das Heer auf und lagerte sich südlich von Emmaus.

Und Judas sprach: Rüstet euch und zeiget euch als wackere Männer und seid bereit für morgen, gegen diese Heiden zu kämpfen, welche sich wider uns vereint haben, um uns und unser Heiligtum zu vertilgen;

denn es ist besser für uns, im Kampfe zu sterben als das Unglück unseres Volkes und unseres Heiligtums zu sehen.

Wie es aber im Himmel beschlossen ist, also geschehe es!
