- Kapitel 33 -

(Deuteronomy 1:1–8)

Afterward the Lord sayd vnto Moses, Depart, goe vp from hence, thou, and the people (which thou hast brought vp out of lande of Egypt) vnto the lande which I sware vnto Abraham, to Izhak and to Iaakob, saying, Vnto thy seede will I giue it.

And I will send an Angel before thee and will cast out the Canaanites, the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebusites:

To a lande, I say, that floweth with milke and hony: for I will not goe vp with thee, because thou art a stiffe necked people, least I consume thee in the way.

And when the people heard this euill tydings, they sorowed, and no man put on his best rayment.

(For the Lord had said to Moses, Say vnto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffe necked people, I wil come suddenly vpon thee, and consume thee: therefore now put thy costly rayment from thee, that I may know what to do vnto thee)

So the children of Israel layed their good raiment from them, after Moses came downe from the mount Horeb.

The Tent of Meeting

Then Moses tooke his tabernacle, and pitched it without the host farre off from the hoste, and called it Ohel-moed. And whe any did seeke to the Lord, he went out vnto the Tabernacle of the Congregation, which was without the hoste.

And when Moses went out vnto the Tabernacle, all the people rose vp, and stood euery man at his tent doore, and looked after Moses, vntil he was gone into the Tabernacle.

And assoone as Moses was entred into the Tabernacle, the cloudie pillar descended and stood at the doore of the Tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses.

Nowe when all the people saw the cloudie pillar stand at the Tabernacle doore, all the people rose vp, and worshipped euery man in his tent doore.

And the Lord spake vnto Moses, face to face, as a man speaketh vnto his friende. After he turned againe into the hoste, but his seruant Ioshua the sonne of Nun a yong man, departed not out of the Tabernacle.

The Promise of God’s Presence

Then Moses sayde vnto the Lord, See, thou sayest vnto me, Leade this people forth, and thou hast not shewed me whom thou wilt sende with mee: thou hast sayde moreouer, I knowe thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.

Nowe therefore, I pray thee, if I haue founde fauour in thy sight, shewe mee nowe thy way, that I may knowe thee, and that I may finde grace in thy sight: consider also that this nation is thy people.

And he answered, My presence shall go with thee, and I will giue thee rest.

Then he sayd vnto him, If thy presence go not with vs, cary vs not hence.

And wherein nowe shall it be knowen, that I and thy people haue found fauour in thy sight? shall it not be when thou goest with vs? so I, and thy people shall haue preeminence before all the people that are vpon the earth.

And the Lord sayde vnto Moses, I will doe this also that thou hast saide: for thou hast founde grace in my sight, and I knowe thee by name.

Againe he sayde, I beseech thee, shewe me thy glory.

And he answered, I wil make all my good go before thee, and I wil proclaime the Name of the Lord before thee: for I will shewe mercy to whom I will shewe mercy, and will haue compassion on whom I will haue compassion.

Furthermore he sayde, Thou canst not see my face, for there shall no man see me, and liue.

Also the Lord sayd, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand vpon the rocke:

And while my glory passeth by, I will put thee in a cleft of the rocke, and will couer thee with mine hand whiles I passe by.

After I will take away mine hande, and thou shalt see my backe parts: but my face shall not be seene.

Der Befehl, den Sinai zu verlassen

(5. Mose 1,1-8)

Und der Herr redete zu Moses und sprach: Mache dich auf, ziehe hinauf von hier, du und dein Volk, das du aus dem Lande Ägypten geführt hast, in das Land, das ich Abraham, Isaak und Jakob zugeschworen habe, indem ich sprach: Deinen Nachkommen werde ich es geben.

Und ich werde einen Engel vor dir hersenden, dass ich die Chananiter, Amorrhiter, Hethiter, Phereziter, Heviter, und Jebusiter vertreibe

und du in das Land einziehest, das von Milch und Honig fließt. Denn ich werde nicht mit dir hinaufziehen, weil du ein halsstarriges Volk bist; dass ich dich nicht etwa auf dem Wege vernichten müsse.

Als das Volk diese schlimme Botschaft vernahm, wurde es traurig, und keiner legte seinen Schmuck an, wie er gewohnt war.

Der Herr hatte nämlich zu Moses gesprochen: Sage den Söhnen Israels: Du bist ein halsstarriges Volk, zöge ich nur einmal in deiner Mitte hinauf, ich müsste dich vernichten. So lege nun deinen Schmuck ab, und ich will sehen was ich mit dir tun soll.

Also legten die Söhne Israels ihren Schmuck ab vom Berge Horeb an.

Mose trifft sich mit dem HERRN

Und Moses nahm das Zelt, und schlug es außerhalb des Lagers, von demselben entfernt, auf, und nannte es das Zelt des Bundes. Und jeder unter dem Volke, der irgend eine Frage zu stellen hatte, ging zu dem Zelte des Bundes, außerhalb des Lagers, hinaus.

So oft nun Moses zu dem Zelte hinausging, stand das ganze Volk auf, und ein jeder trat unter den Eingang seines Zeltes und schaute Moses nach, bis er in das Zelt eintrat.

Wenn er aber in das Zelt des Bundes hineingegangen war, so stieg die Wolkensäule hernieder, und stand am Eingange des Zeltes, und redete mit Moses,

so dass alle sahen, dass die Wolkensäule vor der Türe des Zeltes stand. Alsdann erhoben sie sich und beteten von dem Eingange ihrer Zelte aus an.

Der Herr aber redete zu Moses von Angesicht zu Angesicht, wie ein Mensch mit seinem Freunde zu reden pflegt. Und wenn er in das Lager zurückkehrte, so blieb sein Gehilfe Josue, der Sohn Nuns, ein junger Mann, beständig bei dem Zelte.

Die Verheißung der Anwesenheit Gottes

Moses aber sprach zu dem Herrn: Du befiehlst mir, dieses Volk wegzuführen, aber tust mir nicht kund, wen du mit mir senden willst, zumal du doch gesagt hast: Ich kenne dich mit Namen und du hast Gnade vor mir gefunden.

Wenn ich also Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden habe, so zeige mir dein Angesicht, damit ich dich erkenne und Gnade in deinen Augen finde; siehe dieses Volk an, dein Volk.

Der Herr sprach: Mein Angesicht wird vor dir hergehen, und ich will dir Ruhe gewähren.

Und Moses sprach: Wenn du nicht selbst vorangehest, so führe uns nicht von diesem Orte fort;

denn woran werden wir erkennen können, ich und dein Volk, dass wir in deinen Augen Gnade gefunden haben, wenn du nicht mit uns gehst, damit wir verherrlicht werden vor allen Völkern, die auf der Erde wohnen?

Der Herr aber sprach zu Moses: Auch diese Bitte, welche du ausgesprochen, will ich erfüllen; denn du hast Gnade vor mir gefunden, und ich kenne dich mit Namen.

Er sprach: Zeige mir deine Herrlichkeit!

Er antwortete: Ich will dir alles Gute zeigen und vor dir den Namen des Herrn laut rufen, und ich werde mich erbarmen über wen ich will, und gnädig sein gegen wen es mir gefällt.

Und wiederum sprach er: Mein Angesicht kannst du nicht sehen; denn kein Mensch sieht mich und bleibt am Leben.

Und weiter sprach er: Siehe, es ist ein Ort in meiner Nähe, da magst du auf den Felsen hintreten.

Wenn dann meine Herrlichkeit vorübergeht, werde ich dich in eine Höhle des Felsen stellen und mit meiner Rechten bedecken, bis ich vorübergegangen bin.

Wenn ich dann meine Hand wegnehme, so wirst du meine Rückseite sehen; aber mein Angesicht wirst du nicht schauen können.
