- Kapitel 17 -

(Numbers 20:1–13)

And all the Congregation of the children of Israel departed from the wildernesse of Sin, by their iourneyes at the commandement of the Lord, and camped in Rephidim, where was no water for the people to drinke.

Wherefore the people contended with Moses, and sayde, Giue vs water that we may drinke. And Moses sayde vnto them, Why contende yee with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord?

So the people thirsted there for water, and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore hast thou thus brought vs out of Egypt to kill vs and our children and our cattel with thirst?

And Moses cried to the Lord, saying, What shall I do to this people? for they be almost ready to stone me.

And ye Lord answered to Moses, Goe before the people, and take with thee of the Elders of Israel: and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the riuer, take in thine hand, and go:

Behold, I will stand there before thee vpon the rocke in Horeb, and thou shalt smite on the rocke, and water shall come out of it, that the people may drinke. And Moses did so in the sight of the Elders of Israel.

And he called the name of the place, Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they had tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among vs, or no?

The Defeat of the Amalekites

Then came Amalek and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

And Moses sayde to Ioshua, Chuse vs out men, and go fight with Amalek: to morowe I will stande on the toppe of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

So Ioshua did as Moses bad him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur, went vp to the top of the hill.

And when Moses helde vp his hande, Israel preuailed: but when he let his hande downe, Amalek preuailed.

Nowe Moses handes were heauy: therefore they tooke a stone and put it vnder him, and hee sate vpon it: and Aaron and Hur stayed vp his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side: so his hands were steady vntill the going downe of the sunne.

And Ioshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

And the Lord sayde to Moses, Write this for a remembrance in the booke, and rehearse it to Ioshua: for I will vtterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from vnder heauen.

(And Moses builte an altar and called the name of it, Iehouah-nissi)

Also he said, The Lord hath sworne, that he will haue warre with Amalek from generation to generation.

Wasser aus dem Felsen

(4. Mose 20,1-13)

Die ganze Schar der Söhne Israels zog also aus der Wüste Sin durch ihre Standorte, wie der Herr es befohlen, und sie lagerten sich in Raphidim, dort war aber kein Wasser für das Volk zu trinken.

Da haderte es mit Moses und sprach: Gib uns Wasser, dass wir trinken. Moses antwortete ihnen: Was hadert ihr mit mir? Warum versucht ihr den Herrn?

Das Volk also litt daselbst Durst aus Mangel an Wasser, und murrte wider Moses, und sprach: Warum hast du uns aus Ägypten fortgeführt, um uns, und unsere Kinder, und unser Vieh vor Durst sterben zu lassen?

Da rief Moses zum Herrn und sprach: Was soll ich mit diesem Volke tun? Wenig fehlt, so wird es mich steinigen.

Der Herr sprach zu Moses: Gehe dem Volke voraus, und nimm einige von den Ältesten Israels mit dir, und nimm den Stab, mit dem du in den Fluss geschlagen hast, in deine Hand, und so gehe.

Siehe, ich will daselbst vor dir auf dem Felsen Horeb stehen; schlage an den Felsen, so wird Wasser herausfließen, dass das Volk trinke. Da tat Moses so, vor den Augen der Ältesten Israels.

Und er nannte den Namen dieses Ortes Versuchung wegen des Haderns der Söhne Israels, und weil sie den Herrn versuchten und sprachen: Ist der Herr in unserer Mitte, oder nicht?

Sieg über die Amalekiter

Da kam aber Amalek heran und stritt mit Israel in Raphidim.

Und Moses sprach zu Josue: Wähle Männer aus, und ziehe hin, kämpfe mit Amalek; ich aber will morgen auf dem Gipfel des Hügels stehen, den Stab Gottes in meiner Hand.

Josue tat, wie Moses gesprochen hatte, und kämpfte gegen Amalek; Moses aber und Aaron und Hur stiegen auf den Gipfel des Hügels.

So lange nun Moses die Hände aufhob, war Israel siegreich; ließ er sie aber ein wenig sinken, so gewann Amalek die Oberhand.

Aber allmählich wurden Moses Hände schwer; deshalb nahmen sie einen Stein und legten ihm denselben unter, und er setzte sich darauf; Aaron aber und Hur unterstützten seine Hände von beiden Seiten. So geschah es, dass seine Hände nicht lass wurden bis zum Untergang der Sonne.

Und Josue schlug Amalek und dessen Volk mit der Schärfe des Schwertes.

Der Herr aber sprach zu Moses: Schreibe dies zum Angedenken in ein Buch und lies es vor den Ohren Josues; denn ich werde das Andenken Amaleks unter dem Himmel austilgen.

Und Moses baute einen Altar, und hieß seinen Namen: der Herr meine Erhöhung, und sprach:

Die Hand vom Throne des Herrn und der Kampf des Herrn wird gegen Amalek sein von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht.
