- Kapitel 4 -

Now the enemies of Juda and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple to the Lord the God of Israel.

And they came to Zorobabel, and the chief of the fathers, and said to them: Let us build with you, for we seek your God as ye do: behold we have sacrificed to him, since the days of Asor Haddan king of Assyria, who brought us hither.

But Zorobabel, and Josue, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel said to them: You have nothing to do with us to build a house to our God, but we ourselves alone will build to the Lord our God, as Cyrus king of the Persians hath commanded us.

Then the people of the land hindered the hands of the people of Juda, and troubled them in building.

And they hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their design all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of the Persians.

Opposition under Xerxes and Artaxerxes

And in the reign of Assuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Juda and Jerusalem.

And in the days of Artaxerxes, Beselam, Mithridates, and Thabeel, and the rest that were in the council wrote to Artaxerxes king of the Persians: and the letter of accusation was written in Syriac, and was read in the Syrian tongue.

Reum Beelteem, and Samsai the scribe wrote a letter from Jerusalem to king Artaxerxes, in this manner:

Reum Beelteem, and Samsai the scribe and the rest of their counsellors, the Dinites, and the Apharsathacites, the Therphalites, the Apharsites, the Erchuites, the Babylonians, the Susanechites, the Dievites, and the Elamites,

And the rest of the nations, whom the great and glorious Asenaphar brought over: and made to dwell in the cities of Samaria and in the rest of the countries of this side of the river in peace.

(This is the copy of the letter, which they sent to him:) To Artaxerxes the king, thy servants, the men that are on this side of the river, send greeting.

Be it known to the king, that the Jews, who came up from thee to us, are come to Jerusalem a rebellious and wicked city, which they are building, setting up the ramparts thereof and repairing the walls.

And now be it known to the king, that if this city be built up, and the walls thereof repaired, they will not pay tribute nor toll, nor yearly revenues, and this loss will fail upon the kings.

But we remembering the salt that we have eaten in the palace, and because we count it a crime to see the king wronged, have therefore sent and certified the king,

That search may be made in the books of the histories of thy fathers, and thou shalt find written in the records: and shalt know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to the kings and provinces, and that wars were raised therein of old time: for which cause also the city was destroyed.

We certify the king, that if this city be built, and the walls thereof repaired, thou shalt have no possession on this side of the river.

The Decree of Artaxerxes

The king sent word to Reum Beelteem and Samsai the scribe, and to the rest that were in their council, inhabitants of Samaria, and to the rest beyond the river, sending greeting and peace.

The accusation, which you have sent to us, hath been plainly read before me,

And I commanded: and search hath been made, and it is found, that this city of old time hath rebelled against kings, and seditions and wars have been raised therein.

For there have been powerful kings in Jerusalem, who hare had dominion over all the country that is beyond the river: and have received tribute, and toll and revenues.

Now therefore hear the sentence: Hinder those men, that this city be not built, till further orders be given by me.

See that you be not negligent in executing this, lest by little and little the evil grow to the hurt of the kings.

Now the copy of the edict of king Artaxerxes was read before Reum Beelteem, and Samsai the scribe, and their counsellors: and they went up in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and hindered them with arm and power.

Then the work of the house of the Lord in Jerusalem was interrupted, and ceased till the second year of the reign of Darius king of the Persians.

Widerstand gegen den Wiederaufbau des Tempels

Als aber die Feinde Judas und Benjamins hörten, dass die Kinder der Gefangenschaft dem Herrn, dem Gott Israels, den Tempel erbauten,

traten sie zu Zorobabel und zu den Häuptern der Stammhäuser und sprachen zu ihnen: Lasset uns mit euch bauen, denn wir suchen euern Gott, so wie ihr; sehet, wir haben Opfer dargebracht seit den Tagen Asor-Haddans, des Königs von Assur, welcher uns herbeigeführt hat.

Da sprachen Zorobabel und Josue und die übrigen Häupter der Stammhäuser Israels zu ihnen: Nicht euch und uns zugleich gehört es zu, unserm Gott ein Haus zu bauen, sondern nur wir allein wollen es dem Herrn, unserm Gott, bauen, wie uns Cyrus, der König von Persien, befohlen hat.

So geschah es denn, dass das Volk des Landes das Volk von Juda hinderte und bei dem Baue störte.

Und sie dingten wider sie Ratgeber, um ihr Vorhaben zu vereiteln, so lange Cyrus, der König von Persien, lebte, und bis zur Regierung des Darius, des Königs von Persien.

Widerstand gegen den Wiederaufbau von Jerusalem

Und der Regierung des Assuerus aber schrieben sie im Anfange seiner Regierung eine Anklage gegen die Bewohner von Juda und Jerusalem.

Und in den Tagen des Artaxerxes schrieben Beselam, Mithridates, Thabeel und die übrigen, welche mit ihnen im Einverständnis waren, an Artaxerxes, den König von Persien; die Klageschrift aber war syrisch geschrieben und man las sie in syrischer Sprache.

Reum Beelteem und Samsai, der Schreiber, schrieben an den König Artaxerxes einen Brief über Jerusalem, also lautend:

Reum Beelteem und Samsai, der Schreiber, und ihre übrigen Genossen, die Diniter, Apharsathachiter, Terphaliter, Apharsither, Erchuiter, Babylonier, Susanechiter, Dieviter und Älamiter,

und die übrigen Völkerschaften, welche der große und glorreiche Asenapher weggeführt und in den Städten Samarias und in den andern Landschaften jenseits des Flusses angesiedelt hat in Frieden;

(Dies ist die Abschrift des Briefes, den sie an ihn sandten:) Dem Könige Artaxerxes! Deine Knechte, die Männer, welche jenseits des Stromes wohnen, wünschen dir Heil!

Es sei dem Könige kund, dass die Juden, welche von dir zu uns heraufzogen, nach Jerusalem gekommen sind, und diese aufrührerische und schlechte Stadt aufbauen, ihre Mauern aufrichten, und die Wände zusammenfügen.

So sei also dem Könige kund, dass wenn diese Stadt aufgebaut und ihre Mauern hergestellt sein werden, sie keine Steuer, noch Zoll und jährliche Abgaben mehr geben werden, und diese Schädigung wird zuletzt selbst die Könige treffen.

Wir aber sind des Salzes eingedenk, das wir im Palaste essen, und weil es uns unrecht scheint, den Schaden des Königs ansehen zu müssen, darum senden wir hin und geben dem Könige Nachricht,

damit du in den Büchern der Denkwürdigkeiten deiner Väter nachsuchen lassest; und du wirst in den Denkwürdigkeiten geschrieben finden und ersehen, dass diese Stadt eine aufrührerische Stadt ist und Königen und Ländern Schaden zufügt und dass in ihr von jeher Kriege angestiftet werden, weshalb denn auch diese Stadt zerstört wurde.

Wir tun dem Könige zu wissen, dass du, wenn diese Stadt aufgebaut wird und ihre Mauern wiederhergestellt werden, jenseits des Stromes keinen Besitz mehr haben wirst.

Da sandte der König einen Befehl an Reum Beelteem und an Samsai, den Schreiber, und an die übrigen Bewohner Samarias, die ihre Genossen waren, und an die andern jenseits des Stromes, indem er ihnen Heil und Frieden wünschte.

Die Anklage, welche ihr an uns gesendet, ist deutlich vor mir gelesen worden

denn es ward von mir Befehl gegeben, man hat nachgeforscht und gefunden, dass diese Stadt von alters her sich gegen die Könige auflehnt und Aufruhr und Streit in ihr angestiftet werden;

denn auch sehr mächtige Könige waren in Jerusalem, welche über die ganze Landschaft jenseits des Stromes ihre Herrschaft ausübten und Zoll und Abgaben empfingen.

So höret nun die Entscheidung: Tuet jenen Männern Einheit, dass diese Stadt nicht wieder aufgebaut werde, bis etwa von mir Befehl dazu gegeben wird.

Sehet zu, dass ihr dies nicht saumselig vollziehet und allmählich der Nachteil, den die Könige erdulden, wachse.

Als die Abschrift des Befehles des Königs Artaxerxes vor Reum Beelteem und Samsai, dem Schreiber, und ihren Genossen gelesen war, zogen sie eilig nach Jerusalem zu den Juden und taten ihnen mit mächtigem Arme Einhalt.

Damals ward das Werk am Hause des Herrn zu Jerusalem eingestellt und es geschah nichts bis zum zweiten Jahre der Regierung des Darius, des Königs von Persien.
