- Kapitel 14 -

“Do not let your heart be troubled. You believe in God. Believe in me also.

In my Father’s house, there are many dwelling places. If there were not, I would have told you. For I go to prepare a place for you.(a)

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will return again, and then I will take you to myself, so that where I am, you also may be.

And you know where I am going. And you know the way.”

The Way, the Truth, and the Life

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus said to him: “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.

If you had known me, certainly you would also have known my Father. And from now on, you shall know him, and you have seen him.”

Philip said to him, “Lord, reveal the Father to us, and it is enough for us.”

Jesus said to him: “Have I been with you for so long, and you have not known me? Philip, whoever sees me, also sees the Father. How can you say, ‘Reveal the Father to us?’

Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I am speaking to you, I do not speak from myself. But the Father abiding in me, he does these works.

Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

Or else, believe because of these same works. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me shall also do the works that I do. And greater things than these shall he do, for I go to the Father.

And whatever you shall ask the Father in my name, that I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

If you shall ask anything of me in my name, that I will do.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

(John 16:5–16)

If you love me, keep my commandments.

And I will ask the Father, and he will give another Advocate to you, so that he may abide with you for eternity:(b)

the Spirit of Truth, whom the world is not able to accept, because it neither perceives him nor knows him. But you shall know him. For he will remain with you, and he will be in you.

I will not leave you orphans. I will return to you.

Yet a little while and the world will not see me any longer. But you will see me. For I live, and you shall live.

In that day, you shall know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

Whoever holds to my commandments and keeps them: it is he who loves me. And whoever loves me shall be loved by my Father. And I will love him, and I will manifest myself to him.”

Judas, not the Iscariot, said to him: “Lord, how does it happen that you will manifest yourself to us and not to the world?”

Jesus responded and said to him: “If anyone loves me, he shall keep my word. And my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and we will make our dwelling place with him.

Whoever does not love me, does not keep not my words. And the word that you have heard is not of me, but it is of the Father who sent me.

These things I have spoken to you, while abiding with you.

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will suggest to you everything whatsoever that I have said to you.(e)

Peace I Leave with You

Peace I leave for you; my Peace I give to you. Not in the way that the world gives, do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, and let it not fear.

You have heard that I said to you: I am going away, and I am returning to you. If you loved me, certainly you would be gladdened, because I am going to the Father. For the Father is greater than I.(f)

And now I have told you this, before it happens, so that, when it will happen, you may believe.

I will not now speak at length with you. For the prince of this world is coming, but he does not have anything in me.

Yet this is so that the world may know that I love the Father, and that I am acting according to the commandment that the Father has given to me. Rise up, let us go from here.”

(a)14:2 Some translations render ‘mansiones’ as ‘mansions.’ But a translator should not always use the English word that most closely resembles the Latin word. In this case, ‘mansions’ is not accurate and ‘rooms’ can be used only metaphorically, so ‘dwelling places’ is a better fit, being more general and a more accurate rendering of ‘mansiones.’(Conte)

(b)14:16 The word Paraclete is translated as Advocate, rather than leaving it as ‘Paraclete’ which then would need to be explained to many people. Generally, I think that words should be translated, even if they are place names or titles, wherever it would otherwise be unclear.(Conte)

Der Weg, die Wahrheit und das Leben

Euer Herz bange nicht! Ihr glaubet an Gott; glaubet auch an mich!

In meines Vaters Hause sind viele Wohnungen. Wenn es nicht so wäre, so hätte ich es euch gesagt; denn ich gehe hin, euch eine Stätte zu bereiten.

Und wenn ich hingegangen bin, und euch eine Stätte bereitet habe, so komme ich wieder, und werde euch zu mir nehmen, damit auch ihr seiet, wo ich bin.

Wohin ich gehe, wisset ihr, und den Weg wisset ihr auch.

Da sprach Thomas zu ihm: Herr! wir wissen nicht, wohin du gehst; und wie können wir den Weg wissen?

Jesus sprach zu ihm: Ich bin der Weg, die Wahrheit und das Leben. Niemand kommt zum Vater, außer durch mich.

Der Vater offenbart

Wenn ihr mich erkannt hättet, so würdet ihr auch meinen Vater erkannt haben; aber von nun an werdet ihr ihn erkennen, und ihr habt ihn gesehen.

Philippus sprach zu ihm: Herr! zeige uns den Vater, und es genügt uns.

Jesus sprach zu ihm: So lange Zeit bin ich bei euch, und ihr habt mich noch nicht erkannt? Philippus! wer mich sieht, sieht auch den Vater. Wie kannst du sagen: Zeige uns den Vater?

Glaubet ihr nicht, dass ich im Vater bin, und der Vater in mir ist? Die Worte, welche ich zu euch rede, rede ich nicht von mir selbst. Der Vater aber, der in mir wohnt, er tut die Werke.

Glaubet ihr nicht, dass ich im Vater bin, und der Vater in mir ist?

Das erhörte Gebet

Wo nicht, da glaubet mir doch um der Werke willen. Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, wer an mich glaubt, der wird die Werke, die ich tue, auch tun, und noch größere, als diese tun; denn ich gehe zum Vater!

Und um was immer ihr den Vater bitten werdet in meinem Namen, das werde ich tun, damit der Vater in dem Sohne verherrlicht werde.

Wenn ihr mich um etwas bitten werdet in meinem Namen, so werde ich es tun.

Jesus verheißt einen anderen Beistand

(Johannes 16,5-16)

Wenn ihr mich liebet, so haltet meine Gebote.

Und ich werde den Vater bitten, und er wird euch einen anderen Tröster geben, damit er bei euch bleibe in Ewigkeit,

den Geist der Wahrheit, welchen die Welt nicht empfangen kann, weil sie ihn nicht sieht, und ihn nicht kennt. Ihr aber werdet ihn kennen; denn er wird bei euch bleiben, und in euch sein.

Ich werde euch nicht als Waisen zurücklassen; ich werde zu euch kommen.

Die Innewohnung des Vaters und des Sohnes

Noch eine kleine Weile, und die Welt sieht mich nicht mehr. Ihr aber werdet mich sehen, weil ich lebe, und ihr leben werdet.

An jenem Tage werdet ihr erkennen, dass ich in meinem Vater bin, und ihr in mir, und ich in euch.

Wer meine Gebote hat, und sie hält, der ist es, der mich liebt. Wer aber mich liebt, wird von meinem Vater geliebt werden; und ich werde ihn lieben, und mich selbst ihm offenbaren.

Da sprach Judas, nicht der Iskariot, zu ihm: Herr! was ist geschehen, dass du dich uns offenbaren willst, und nicht der Welt?

Jesus antwortete, und sprach zu ihm: Wenn jemand mich liebt, so wird er meine Lehre halten, und mein Vater wird ihn lieben; und wir werden zu ihm kommen, und Wohnung bei ihm nehmen.

Wer mich nicht liebt, der hält meine Lehre nicht; und die Lehre, welche ihr gehört habet, ist nicht meine, sondern dessen, der mich gesandt hat, des Vaters.

Das Geschenk seines Friedens

Dieses habe ich euch gesagt, da ich noch bei euch weile.

Der Tröster aber, der Heilige Geist, den der Vater senden wird in meinem Namen, er wird euch alles lehren, und euch alles in Erinnerung bringen, was immer ich euch gesagt habe.

Frieden hinterlasse ich euch, meinen Frieden gebe ich euch; nicht wie die Welt gibt, gebe ich euch. Euer Herz beunruhige sich nicht, und zage nicht!

Ihr habt gehört, dass ich euch gesagt habe: Ich gehe hin, und komme zu euch. Wenn ihr mich liebtet, so würdet ihr euch ja freuen, dass ich zum Vater hingehe; denn der Vater ist größer als ich.

Auch jetzt habe ich es euch gesagt, ehe es geschieht, damit ihr glaubet, wenn es geschehen ist.

Nicht mehr vieles werde ich mit euch reden; denn es kommt der Fürst dieser Welt, und an mir hat er keinen Teil.

Aber damit die Welt erkenne, dass ich den Vater liebe, und wie mir der Vater aufgetragen hat, also tue: Stehet auf, lasset uns von hinnen gehen!
