Job and his family in Uz

(James 5:7-12)

There was a man in the land of Uz named Job, and he was a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil.(a)

And there had been born to him seven sons and three daughters.

And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, along with five hundred pairs of oxen and five hundred she-donkeys, and also a very large family. And this man was great among all the people of the east.

And his sons went and made a feast by houses, each one on his day. And sending, they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.(d)

And when the days of their feasting had been completed, Job sent to them and sanctified them, and, getting up at dawn, he offered holocausts for each one. For he said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and have not praised God in their hearts.” So Job did all the days.(e)

Satan attacks Job's character

But on a certain day, when the sons of God came to attend in the presence of the Lord, Satan also arrived among them.(g)

The Lord said to him, “Where do you come from?” Answering, he said, “I have circled the land, and walked around in it.”

And the Lord said to him, “Have you not considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the land, a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil.”

Answering him, Satan said, “Does Job fear God to no purpose?

Have you not fortified him, as well as his house and every one of his belongings around him, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession has increased in the land?

But extend your hand a little, and touch all that he possesses, and see if he still praises you to your face.”

Therefore, the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, everything that he has is in your hand, only do not extend your hand against him.” And Satan departed from the face of the Lord.

Job loses his possessions and his children

So, on a certain day, when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine, in the house of their first-born brother,

a messenger came to Job, who said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys were grazing beside them,

and the Sabeans rushed in and carried away everything, and they struck the servants with the sword; and I alone evaded them to tell you.”

And while he was still speaking, another arrived, and he said, “The fire of God fell from heaven, and, having struck the sheep and the servants, it consumed them; and I alone escaped to tell you.”

And while he also was still speaking, another arrived, and he said, “The Chaldeans organized three attacks, and advanced on the camels and took them; and not only that, but they have struck the servants with the sword; and I alone fled to tell you.”(i)

He was still speaking, and behold, another entered, and he said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine in the house of their first-born brother,

when suddenly a severe wind rushed forth from a region of the desert and shook the four corners of the house, which collapsed and crushed your children, and they are dead; and I alone escaped to tell you.”

Then Job got up and tore his garments, and, having shaved his head, he collapsed on the ground, and worshipped,

and he said, “Naked I departed from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Just as it pleased the Lord, so has it been done. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

In all this, Job did not sin by his lips, nor did he speak any foolish thing against God.

(a)1:1 The Book of Job is about events in the life of a man named Job. It is also about the future sufferings of the Church. Job is the Church. The sufferings of Job are the sufferings of the Church. The Book of Job is not only about the one man Job who suffered greatly, but it is also about the tribulation of the Church during the end times. There are repeated spiritual references to afflictions also mentioned in the Book of Revelation.(Conte)

Hiob und seine Familie in Uz

(Jakobus 5,7-12)

Es war ein Mann im Lande Hus, mit Namen Job; derselbe war ohne Falsch und rechtschaffen und gottesfürchtig und das Böse meidend.

Diesem wurden sieben Söhne und drei Töchter geboren.

Und sein Besitz bestand in siebentausend Schafen und dreitausend Kamelen, fünfhundert Joch Ochsen und fünfhundert Eselinnen; dazu hatte er ein sehr zahlreiches Gesinde und dieser Mann war groß unter allen Söhnen des Morgenlandes.

Seine Söhne pflegten von Haus zu Haus, ein jeder an seinem Tage, ein Gastmahl zu veranstalten, indem sie hinsandten und ihre drei Schwestern einluden, mit ihnen zu essen und zu trinken.

Wenn dann die Tage des Gastmahles der Reihe nach um waren, sandte Job zu ihnen und heiligte sie und, sich am frühen Morgen erhebend, brachte er für einen jeden Brandopfer dar, den er sprach: Vielleicht haben meine Söhne gesündigt und Gott gelästert in ihren Herzen. So tat Job alle Zeit.

Satan greift Hiobs Charakter an

Eines Tages nun kamen die Söhne Gottes, vor dem Herrn zu erscheinen, da war unter ihnen auch der Satan zugegen.

Zu diesem sprach der Herr: Woher kommst du? Er antwortete und sprach: Ich habe die Erde durchstreift und sie durchwandert.

Da sprach der Herr zu ihm: Hast du wohl acht gehabt auf meinen Diener Job, dass seinesgleichen nicht auf Erden ist, ein Mann aufrichtig, recht, gottesfürchtig und das Böse meidend?

Der Satan antwortete ihm und sprach: Fürchtet wohl Job Gott umsonst?

Hast du nicht ihn und sein Haus und alle seine Habe ringsum mit einem Walle umgeben? Hast du nicht die Werke seiner Hände gesegnet und hat sein Besitztum nicht zugenommen im Lande?

Aber strecke nur einmal deine Hand ein wenig aus und taste alles an, was er hat, ob er dich dann nicht ins Angesicht lästert?

Da sprach der Herr zu dem Satan: Siehe, alles, was er hat, ist in deiner Hand! Nur gegen ihn strecke deine Hand nicht aus. Da ging der Satan hinweg vom Angesichte des Herrn.

Hiob verliert seinen Besitz und seine Kinder

Als aber eines Tages seine Söhne und Töchter im Hause ihres erstgeborenen Bruders aßen und Wein tranken,

kam ein Bote zu Job, welcher sprach: Die Ochsen pflügten und die Eselinnen weideten nahe bei ihnen,

da machten die Sabäer einen Überfall, nahmen alles und erschlugen die Knechte mit dem Schwerte und ich allein bin entkommen, es dir zu verkünden.

Während dieser noch redete, kam ein anderer und sprach: Feuer Gottes fiel vom Himmel und ergriff die Schafe und die Knechte und verzehrte sie und ich bin allein entronnen, es dir zu melden.

Während auch dieser noch redete, kam ein anderer und sprach: Die Chaldäer bildeten drei Haufen, fielen über die Kamele her und nahmen sie, die Knechte aber erschlugen sie mit dem Schwerte und ich bin allein entronnen, es dir zu verkünden.

Noch redete dieser, da trat ein anderer ein und sprach: Deine Söhne und Töchter aßen eben und tranken Wein im Hause ihres erstgeborenen Bruders,

da stürmte plötzlich ein heftiger Wind von der Wüste her heran und erschütterte die vier Ecken des Hauses, so dass es einstürzte und deine Kinder verschüttete, und sie starben; und ich allein bin entkommen, es dir zu verkünden.

Da erhob sich Job, zerriß seine Kleider, schor sein Haupt, betete, sich zur Erde niederwerfend, an

und sprach: Nackt bin ich aus meiner Mutter Schoß hervorgegangen und nackt werde ich dahin zurückkehren; der Herr hat es gegeben, der Herr hat es genommen. Wie es dem Herrn gefiel, so ist es geschehen! Der Name des Herrn sei gepriesen!

Bei alledem sündigte Job nicht mit seinen Lippen und redete nichts Törichtes wider Gott.
