The Prophet Daniel

- Kapitel 13 -

And there was a man living in Babylon, and his name was Joakim.

And he received a wife named Susanna, the daughter of Hilkiah, who was very beautiful and God-fearing.

For her parents, because they were righteous, had educated their daughter according to the law of Moses.

But Joakim was very wealthy, and he had an orchard near his house, and the Jews flocked to him, because he was the most honorable of them all.

And two elder judges had been appointed among the people that year, about whom the Lord has said, “Iniquity has come out of Babylon, from the elder judges, who seemed to govern the people.”(a)

These frequented the house of Joakim, and all came to them, who had need of judgment.

But when the people departed at noontime, Susanna went in and walked around in her husband’s orchard.(b)

And the elders saw her entering and walking around every day, and they were inflamed with desire towards her.

And they perverted their reason and turned away their eyes, so that they would not look to heaven, nor call to mind just judgments.(c)

And so they were both wounded by the love of her, yet they did not reveal their grief to one another.

For they were ashamed to reveal to each other their desire, wanting to lie with her.(d)

And so they watched carefully every day to see her. And one said to the other,

“Let us go home, for it is lunch time.” And going out, they departed one from another.

And returning again, they came to the same place, and, each asking the other the reason, they admitted their desire. And then they agreed to set a time when they would be able to find her alone.

But it happened, while they watched for an opportune day, that she entered at a particular time, just as yesterday and the day before, with only two maids, and she wanted to wash in the orchard, because it was so hot.(e)

And there was no one there, except the two elders in hiding, and they were studying her.

And so she said to the maids, “Bring me oil and ointments, and shut the doors of the orchard, so that I may wash.”(f)

And they did as she ordered them. And they shut the doors of the orchard and left through a back door to fetch what she required, and they did not know that the elders were hiding within.

But when the maids had departed, the two elders arose and hurried to her, and they said,

“Behold, the doors of the orchard are closed, and no one can see us, and we are in desire for you. Because of these things, consent to us and lie with us.(g)

But if you will not, we will bear witness against you that a young man was with you and, for this reason, you sent your maids away from you.”

Susanna sighed and said, “I am closed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death to me; yet if I do not do it, I will not escape your hands.

But it is better for me to fall unavoidably into your hands, than to sin in the sight of the Lord.”

And Susanna cried out with a loud voice, but the elders also cried out against her.

And one of them hurried to the door of the orchard and opened it.(h)

And so, when the servants of the house heard the outcry in the orchard, they rushed in by the back door to see what was happening.

But after the old men had spoken, the servants were greatly ashamed, for there had never been anything of this kind said about Susanna. And it happened on the next day,

when the people came to Joakim her husband, that the two appointed elders also came, full of wicked plans against Susanna, in order to put her to death.(i)

And they said before the people, “Send for Susanna, daughter of Hilkiah, the wife of Joakim.” And immediately they sent for her.

And she arrived with her parents, and sons, and all her relatives.(j)

Moreover, Susanna was exceedingly delicate and beautiful in appearance.

But those wicked ones commanded that her face should be uncovered, (for she was covered,) so that at least they might be satisfied with her beauty.(k)

Therefore, her own and all who knew her wept.

Yet the two appointed elders, rising up in the midst of the people, set their hands upon her head.(l)

And weeping, she gazed up to heaven, for her heart had faith in the Lord.

And the appointed elders said, “While we were taking a walk in the orchard alone, this one came in with two maids, and she shut the doors of the orchard, and she sent the maids away from her.

And a young man came to her, who was in hiding, and he lay down with her.(m)

Furthermore, since we were in a corner of the orchard, seeing this wickedness, we ran up to them, and we saw them consorting together.(n)

And, indeed, we were unable to catch him, because he was stronger than us, and opening the doors, he leaped out.

But, since we had apprehended this one, we demanded to know who the young man was, but she was unwilling to tell us. On this matter, we are witnesses.”

The multitude believed them, just as if they were elders and the judges of the people, and they condemned her to death.

But Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said, “Eternal God, who knows what is hidden, who knows all things before they happen,

you know that they have borne false witness against me, and behold, I must die, though I have done none of these things, which these men have maliciously invented against me.”(o)

But the Lord heeded her voice.

And when she was led away to death, the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young boy, whose name was Daniel.

And he cried out with a loud voice, “I am clean of the blood of this one.”

And all the people, turning back towards him, said, “What is this word that you are saying?”

But he, while standing in the midst of them, said, “Are you so foolish, sons of Israel, that without judging and without knowing what the truth is, you have condemned a daughter of Israel?

Return to judgment, because they have spoken false witness against her.”

Therefore, the people returned with haste, and the old men said to him, “Come and sit down in our midst and show us, since God has given you the honor of old age.”

And Daniel said to them, “Separate these at a distance from one another, and I will judge between them.”

And so, when they were divided, one from the other, he called one of them, and he said to him, “You deep-rooted ancient evil, now your sins have come out, which you have committed before,(p)

judging unjust judgments, oppressing the innocent, and setting free the guilty, though the Lord declares, ‘The innocent and the just you must not put to death.’

Now then, if you saw her, declare under which tree you saw them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen mastic tree.”(q)

But Daniel said, “Truly, you have lied against your own head. For behold, the angel of God, having received the sentence from him, will split you down the middle.

And, having put him aside, he commanded the other to approach, and he said to him, “You offspring of Canaan, and not of Judah, beauty has deceived you, and desire has perverted your heart.

Thus did you do to the daughters of Israel, and they, out of fear, consorted with you, but a daughter of Judah would not tolerate your iniquity.(r)

Now then, declare to me, under which tree you caught them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen oak tree.”

And Daniel said to him, “Truly, you also have lied against your own head. For the angel of the Lord waits, holding a sword, to cut you down the middle and put you to death.”(s)

And then the entire assembly cried out in a loud voice, and they blessed God, who saves those who hope in him.

And they rose up against the two appointed elders, (for Daniel had convicted them, by their own mouth, of bearing false witness,) and they did to them just as they had wickedly done against their neighbor,

so as to act according to the law of Moses. And they put them to death, and innocent blood was saved on that day.

But Hilkiah and his wife praised God for their daughter, Susanna, with Joakim, her husband, and all her relatives, because there had been found in her no disgrace.

And so Daniel became great in the sight of the people from that day, and thereafter.

And king Astyages was laid to rest with his fathers. And Cyrus the Persian received his kingdom.

He uses the more euphemistic and more discrete term “colloquentes sibi.” The term conversation was used by Flavius Josephus to denote sexual relations. Ein Mann wohnte zu Babylon, mit Namen Joakim.

Dieser nahm ein Weib, Susanna mit Namen, eine Tochter Helkias, die sehr schön war und Gott fürchtete.

Denn da ihre Eltern gerecht waren, hatten sie ihre Tochter dem Gesetze Moses gemäß unterwiesen.

Joakim aber war sehr reich und hatte einen Baumgarten, der nahe bei seinem Hause war, und die Juden kamen bei ihm zusammen, weil er unter allen der angesehenste war.

Nun waren in jenem Jahre zwei Älteste aus dem Volke als Richter aufgestellt, wie jene, von denen der Herr gesprochen: Ungerechtigkeit ging zu Babylon aus von den Ältesten, von den Richtern, welche das Volk zu leiten schienen.

Diese kamen oft in das Haus Joakims und alle, welche eine Rechtssache hatten, begaben sich zu ihnen.

Wenn nun das Volk um die Mittagszeit wieder heimgegangen war, pflegte Susanna sich in den Baumgartens ihres Mannes zu begeben und darin zu lustwandeln.

Die Ältesten sahen sie täglich hineintreten und herumwandeln und entbrannten von böser Lust gegen sie

und verkehrten ihren Sinn und wendeten ihre Augen ab, um nicht zum Himmel aufzuschauen und der gerechten Gerichte zu gedenken.

Beide also waren von Leidenschaft zu ihr verwundet, aber keiner entdeckte dem andern sein Liebesweh,

denn sie schämten sich, einander die böse Lust kundzugeben, dass sie mit Susanna Umgang pflegen wollten.

So lauerten sie Tag für Tag eifrig darauf, sie zu sehen. Sprach einer zu dem andern:

Gehen wir nach Hause, denn es ist Zeit zum Mittagessen; so gingen sie wohl hinaus und trennten sich voneinander,

aber kehrten alsbald wieder um und trafen zusammen. Als sie sich nun gegenseitig nach dem Grunde fragten, gestanden sie sich ihre Leidenschaft ein. Hierauf bestimmten sie zusammen eine Zeit, wo sie jene allein treffen könnten.

Da begab es sich, während sie auf einen gelegenen Tag warteten, dass Susanna einst, wie gestern und ehegestern, nur von zwei Mädchen begleitet, in den Garten kam, sich zu baden, denn es war schwül.

Sonst war auch niemand darin außer den zwei Ältesten, welche sich verborgen hatten und sie beobachteten.

Sie sprach zu den Mädchen: Bringet mir Öl und Salbe und verschließet die Pforte des Gartens, dass ich mich baden kann.

jene taten, wie sie befohlen hatte; sie verschlossen die Pforte des Gartens und gingen durch eine Seitenpforte hinaus, das zu holen, was sie verlangt hatte; sie wussten jedoch nicht, dass die Ältesten sich innerhalb des Gartens versteckt hatten.

Nachdem nun die Mädchen hinausgegangen waren, erhoben sich die zwei Ältesten, liefen zu ihr hin und sprachen:

Siehe, die Pforte des Gartens ist geschlossen und niemand sieht uns, wir sind von Leidenschaft gegen dich entbrannt, darum willige ein und sei uns zu Gefallen.

Willst du dies nicht, so werden wir gegen dich Zeugnis ablegen, dass ein Jüngling bei dir war und dass du deshalb die Mädchen von dir weggeschickt hast.

Da seufzte Susanna und sprach: Bedrängnis umgibt mich von allen Seiten; denn wenn ich dies tue, steht mir der Tod bevor; tue ich es aber nicht, so werde ich euern Händen nicht entrinnen.

Doch besser ist es für mich, ohne solche Tat in eure Hände zu fallen, als vor dem Angesichte des Herrn zu sündigen.

Alsbald rief Susanna mit lauter Stimme, aber auch die Ältesten erhoben ein Geschrei gegen sie.

Und der eine lief zu der Pforte des Gartens und öffnete sie.

Als nun die Diener des Hauses das Geschrei im Garten hörten, eilten sie durch die Seitentür herbei, um zu sehen, was es gebe.

Da brachten die Ältesten ihre Beschuldigungen vor, so dass die Diener sich sehr schämten, denn niemals war eine solche Rede über Susanna geführt worden.

Als nun am andern Tage das Volk sich bei Joakim, ihrem Manne, versammelt hatte, kamen auch die zwei Ältesten, voll böser Anschläge gegen Susanna, um sie dem Tode zu überliefern.

Diese sprachen vor dem Volke: Sendet nach Susanna, der Tochter Helkias, dem Weibe Joakims! Jene sandten alsbald nach ihr.

Da kam sie mit ihren Eltern und ihren Kindern und allen ihren Verwandten.

Susanna aber war sehr zart und schön von Gestalt.

Da befahlen jene Bösewichter, sie zu entschleiern (denn sie war verschleiert), um sich wenigstens so an ihrer Anmut zu sättigen.

Die Ihrigen aber, sowie alle, die sie kannten, weinten.

Nun erhoben die zwei Ältesten sich inmitten des Volkes und legten ihr die Hände auf das Haupt,

während sie weinend zum Himmel aufblickte, denn ihr Herz vertraute auf den Herrn.

Und die Ältesten sprachen: Als wir im Garten allein lustwandelten, trat diese hier mit zwei Mädchen herein, verschloss die Pforte des Gartens und schickte die Mädchen hinweg.

Da kam zu ihr ein Jüngling, der sich versteckt hatte, und buhlte mit ihr.

Wir aber, die wir in einem Winkel des Gartens waren, eilten, da wir die Schandtat sahen, zu ihnen hin und sahen sie in Unzucht beisammen.

Jenen zwar vermochten wir nicht festzuhalten, weil er stärker war als wir, die Türe öffnete und davoneilte,

diese aber ergriffen wir und fragten sie, wer der Jüngling war, aber sie wollte es uns nicht entdecken. Dies bezeugen wir!

Da glaubte die Versammlung ihnen, als Ältesten und Richtern des Volkes, und verurteilte jene zum Tode.

Susanna aber rief mit lauter Stimme und sprach: O ewiger Gott! der du das Verborgene kennst, der du alles weißt, bevor es geschieht,

du weißt, dass sie falsches Zeugnis wider mich abgelegt haben. Siehe, ich sterbe, obwohl ich doch nichts von dem begangen habe, was diese böslich wider mich erdichtet haben!

Und der Herr erhörte ihr Rufen.

Denn als man sie zum Tode führte, erweckte der Herr den Heiligen Geist eines noch jungen Mannes, namens Daniel.

Dieser rief mit lauter Stimme: Ich bin unschuldig an ihrem Blute!

Da wandte sich das ganze Volk zu ihm und sprach: Was bedeutet dieses Wort, das du gesprochen hast?

Er aber trat in ihre Mitte und sprach: Seid ihr so töricht, Söhne Israels! Dass ihr ohne Urteil, ohne euch über die Wahrheit Gewissheit zu verschaffen, eine Tochter Israels verurteilt?

Kehret noch einmal in das Gerichtshaus zurück, denn jene haben falsches Zeugnis wider sie abgelegt.

Da kehrte das Volk eilends um, die Ältesten aber sprachen zu ihm: Komm und setze dich in unsere Mitte und gib uns Aufschluss, denn Gott hat dir den Vorzug des Alters verliehen.

Daniel sprach zu ihnen: Trennet jene weit voneinander, so werde ich über sie urteilen.

Als sie nun einer von dem andern getrennt waren, rief er den einen von ihnen zu sich und sprach zu ihm: In Gottlosigkeit Ergrauter! Jetzt kommt die Ahndung für deine Sünden über dich, die du vormals begangen hast,

da du ungerechte Urteile fälltest, die Unschuldigen unterdrücktest und die Schuldigen freiließest, während doch der Herr gesagt hat: Einen Unschuldigen und Gerechten sollst du nicht töten.

Nun also, wenn du diese hier wirklich gesehen hast, so sage, unter was für einem Baume du sie miteinander hast reden gesehen? Er antwortete: Unter einem Mastixbaume.

Daniel antwortete: Da hast du trefflich auf dein eigenes Haupt gelogen! Denn siehe, der Engel Gottes hat von ihm Befehl erhalten und wird dich mitten entzwei spalten!

Dann ließ er diesen wegbringen und befahl dem andern zu kommen und sprach zu ihm: Du Abkömmling Kanaans und nicht Judas! Die Schönheit hat dich betört und die böse Lust hat dein Herz verkehrt.

So habt ihr mit den Töchtern Israels getan und sie willfahrten euch aus Furcht, aber eine Tochter Judas hat eure Bosheit nicht geduldet.

So sage mir denn also: Unter was für einem Baum hast du sie miteinander redend gefunden? Er antwortete: Unter einer Steineiche.

Daniel aber sprach: Auch du hast trefflich auf dein eigenes Haupt gelogen, denn der Engel des Herrn harrt mit seinem Schwerte, um dich mitten durchzuhauen und euch zu töten.

Da rief das ganze Volk mit lauter Stimme und sie priesen Gott, der die rettet, welche auf ihn hoffen.

Dann erhoben sie sich wider die zwei Ältesten (denn Daniel hatte sie aus ihrem eigenen Munde überführt, dass sie falsches Zeugnis abgelegt hatten) und taten an ihnen dem Bösen gemäß, das sie an ihrem Nächsten verübt hatten,

um nach dem Gesetze Moses zu verfahren, und töteten sie. So war unschuldiges Blut an jenem Tage gerettet.

Helkias aber und sein Weib lobten Gott wegen ihrer Tochter Susanna mit Joakim, ihrem Mann, und allen ihren Verwandten, weil nichts Schandbares an ihr erfunden worden war.

Und Daniel ward vor dem Volke groß von dem Tage an und fernerhin.

Der König Astyages aber ward zu seinen Vätern beigesetzt, und Cyrus, der Perser, überkam dessen Herrschaft.
