- Kapitel 24 -

Then David ascended from there, and he lived in very secure places in Engedi.

And when Saul had returned after pursuing the Philistines, they reported to him, saying, “Behold, David is in the desert of Engedi.”

Therefore, Saul, taking three thousand elect men from all of Israel, traveled in order to search for David and his men, even upon the most broken rocks, which are passable only to mountain goats.

And he arrived at the sheepfolds, which presented themselves along the way. And a cave was in that place, which Saul entered, so that he might ease his bowels. But David and his men were hiding in the interior part of the cave.

And the servants of David said to him: “Behold the day, about which the Lord said to you, ‘I will deliver your enemy to you, so that you may do to him as it will be pleasing in your eyes.’ ” Then David rose up, and he quietly cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.

After this, his own heart struck David, because he had cut off the edge of Saul’s cloak.(a)

And he said to his men: “May the Lord be gracious to me, lest I do this thing to my lord, the Christ of the Lord, so that I lay my hand upon him. For he is the Christ of the Lord.”

And David restrained his men with his words, and he would not permit them to rise up against Saul. And so Saul, going out of the cave, continued to undertake his journey.

Then David also rose up after him. And departing from the cave, he cried out behind the back of Saul, saying: “My lord, the king!” And Saul looked behind him. And David, bowing himself face down to the ground, reverenced.

And he said to Saul: “Why do you listen to the words of men who say: ‘David seeks evil against you?’

Behold, this day your eyes have seen that the Lord has delivered you into my hand, in the cave. And I thought that I might kill you. But my eye has spared you. For I said: I will not extend my hand against my lord, for he is the Christ of the Lord.(b)

Moreover, see and know, O my father, the edge of your cloak in my hand. For though I cut off the top of your cloak, I was not willing to extend my hand against you. Turn your soul and see that there is no evil in my hand, nor any iniquity or sin against you. Yet you lie in wait for my life, so that you may take it away.

May the Lord judge between me and you. And may the Lord vindicate me from you. But my hand will not be against you.(c)

So too, it is said in the ancient proverb, ‘From the impious, impiety will go forth.’ Therefore, my hand will not be upon you.

Whom are you pursuing, O king of Israel? Whom are you pursuing? You are pursuing a dead dog, a single flea.

David’s Oath to Saul

May the Lord be the judge, and may he judge between me and you. And may he see and judge my case, and rescue me from your hand.”

And when David had completed speaking words in this way to Saul, Saul said, “Could this be your voice, my son David?” And Saul lifted up his voice, and he wept.

And he said to David: “You are more just than I am. For you have distributed good to me, but I have repaid evil to you.

And you have revealed this day the good that you have done for me: how the Lord delivered me into your hand, but you did not kill me.

For who, when he will have found his enemy, will release him along a good path? So may the Lord repay you for this good turn, because you have acted on my behalf this day.

And now I know certainly that you shall be king, and you shall have the kingdom of Israel in your hand.

Swear to me in the Lord that you will not take away my offspring after me, nor take away my name from the house of my father.”

And David swore to Saul. Therefore, Saul went away to his own house. And David and his men ascended to places that were more secure.

David verschont Saul

Von dort zog David hinauf und weilte an den sicheren Plätzen von Engaddi.

Als nun Saul von der Verfolgung der Philister zurückkehrte, ward ihm gemeldet: Siehe, David ist in der Wüste von Engaddi!

Da nahm Saul dreitausend aus ganz Israel auserlesene Leute und zog hin, David und dessen Leute zu suchen, auch über die steilsten Felsen, die nur den Steinböcken gangbar sind.

So kam er zu den Schafhürden, welche an dem Wege lagen. Daselbst war eine Höhle, in welche Saul hineinging, den Leib zu entleeren. David aber lag da mit seinen Männern im innern Teile der Höhle versteckt.

Da sprachen die Diener Davids zu ihm: Siehe, heut ist der Tag, von dem der Herr zu dir gesprochen hat: Ich will dir deinen Feind überliefern, dass du mit ihm tuest, was in deinen Augen gut scheint. David stand also auf und schnitt in der Stille einen Zipfel von Sauls Mantel ab.

Darnach aber schlug David das Herz darüber, dass er den Zipfel von dem Mantel Sauls abgeschnitten hatte,

und er sprach zu seinen Leuten: Der Herr sei mir gnädig, dass ich dies nicht an meinem Gebieter, dem Gesalbten des Herrn, verübe, dass ich meine Hand an ihn legen sollte, denn er ist der Gesalbte des Herrn.

Und David brachte den Ungestüm seiner Leute durch dringendes Zureden zum Schweigen und erlaubte ihnen nicht, gegen Saul aufzustehen; Saul aber ging aus der Höhle heraus und setzte den begonnenen Weg fort.

Da machte sich auch David auf ihm nach und trat aus der Höhle heraus und rief hinter Saul her und sprach: Mein Herr und König! Als Saul sich umschaute, verneigte sich David mit dem Angesichte bis zur Erde und brachte ihm Huldigung dar,

alsdann sprach er zu Saul: Warum hörst du auf das Gerede der Leute, die da sagen: David sinnt Böses wider dich?

Siehe, heute haben deine Augen gesehen, dass der Herr dich in der Höhle in meine Gewalt gab, und es kam mir der Gedanke, dich zu töten, aber mein Auge schonte deiner; denn ich sprach: Ich will meine Hand nicht an meinen Gebieter legen, weil er der Gesalbte des Herrn ist.

Ja, mein Vater, siehe da und erkenne den Zipfel deines Mantels in meiner Hand! Dass, als ich den Zipfel deines Mantels abschnitt, ich meine Hand nicht gegen dich ausstrecken wollte. So erkenne und siehe, dass in meiner Hand nichts Böses noch Ungerechtigkeit ist, und dass ich mich nicht wider dich vergangen habe; du aber stellst meinem Leben nach, um es mir zu nehmen.

Der Herr sei Richter zwischen mir und dir und der Herr räche mich an dir, meine Hand soll sich nicht an dir vergreifen.

Wie es auch im alten Sprichworte heißt: Von Gottlosen geht Gottlosigkeit aus; meine Hand also soll sich nicht an dir vergreifen.

Wen verfolgst du, König von Israel? Wen verfolgst du? Einen toten Hund verfolgst du, einen einzigen Floh.

Der Herr sei Richter und entscheide zwischen mir und dir und sehe darein und richte meine Sache und rette mich aus deiner Hand!

Als nun David zu Saul auf solche Weise geredet hatte, sprach Saul: Ist das deine Stimme, mein Sohn David? Und Saul erhob seine Stimme und weinte

und sprach zu David: Du bist gerechter als ich! Denn du hast mir Gutes erwiesen, ich aber habe dir mit Bösem vergolten.

Und du hast heute gezeigt, was du mir Gutes getan; wie der Herr mich in deine Hand gegeben und du mich nicht getötet hast.

Denn wer trifft auf seinen Feind und lässt ihn auf gutem Wege ziehen? Aber der Herr gewähre dir Vergeltung für das, was du heute an mir getan hast.

Und nun, weil ich weiß, dass du ganz gewiss König werden und die Herrschaft in Israel erlangen wirst,

so schwöre mir bei dem Herrn, dass du meine Nachkommenschaft nicht ausrotten und meinen Namen nicht austilgen willst aus dem Hause meines Vaters.

Da schwur David dem Saul. Und Saul zog heim; David aber und seine Männer gingen in sicherere Orte hinauf.
