This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.(a)

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:(b) “Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way.”(c)

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’”(d)

John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
5
People went out to him from all of Jerusalem and the countryside of Judea. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

John was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.

And he began to proclaim: “After me will come One more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
8
I baptize you with water,(e) but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.(f)”

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
10
As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, He saw (g) the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.
11
And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

The Temptation and Preaching of Jesus

(Matthew 4:1–17; Luke 4:1–15)

At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness,

and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.
14
After the arrest of John, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of God.(h)

“The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!”

The First Disciples

(Matthew 4:18–22; Luke 5:1–11; John 1:35–42)

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

“Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

And at once they left their nets and followed Him.
19
Going on a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat, mending their nets.
20
Immediately Jesus called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.

Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit

(Luke 4:31–37)

Then Jesus and His companions went to Capernaum, and right away Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach.
22
The people were astonished at His teaching, because He taught as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
23
Suddenly a man with an unclean spirit cried out in the synagogue:
24
“What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
25
But Jesus rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!”
26
At this, the unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and came out with a loud shriek.
27
All the people were amazed and began to ask one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him!”
28
And the news about Jesus spread quickly through the whole region of Galilee.

Jesus Heals at Peter’s House

(Matthew 8:14–17; Luke 4:38–41)

As soon as Jesus and His companions had left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
30
Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, and they promptly told Jesus about her.
31
So He went to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve them.
32
That evening, after sunset, people brought to Jesus all who were sick and demon-possessed,
33
and the whole town gathered at the door.
34
And He healed many who were ill with various diseases and drove out many demons. But He would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.

Jesus Prays and Preaches

(Luke 4:42–44)

Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray.
36
Simon and his companions went to look for Him,
37
and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone is looking for You!”
38
But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach there as well, for that is why I have come.”
39
So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

The Leper’s Prayer

(Leviticus 14:1–32; Matthew 8:1–4; Luke 5:12–16)

Then a leper (i) came to Jesus, begging on his knees: “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
41
Moved with compassion,(j) Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!”
42
And immediately the leprosy left him, and the man was cleansed.
43
Jesus promptly sent him away with a stern warning:
44
“See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and present the offering Moses prescribed for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”(k)

But the man went out and openly began to proclaim and spread the news. Consequently, Jesus could no longer enter a town in plain view, but He stayed out in solitary places. Yet people came to Him from every quarter.

Wie geschrieben steht bei dem Propheten Isaias: Siehe, ich sende meinen Engel vor deinem Angesichte her, welcher deinen Weg vor dir bereiten wird.

Stimme eines Rufenden in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des Herrn, machet eben seine Pfade!

Es war Johannes, der in der Wüste taufte und Bußtaufe predigte zur Vergebung der Sünden.

Und es ging das ganze Land Judäa und alle Einwohner Jerusalems zu ihm hinaus und wurden von ihm im Fluße Jordan getauft, indem sie ihre Sünden bekannten.

Johannes aber hatte eine Kleidung von Kamelhaaren, und einen ledernen Gürtel um seine Lenden, und aß Heuschrecken und Waldhonig. Und er predigte und sprach:

Es kommt nach mir, der stärker ist als ich; dem ich nicht würdig bin, mich niederbeugend die Riemen seiner Schuhe zu lösen.

Ich habe euch mit Wasser getauft, er aber wird euch mit dem heiligen Geiste taufen.

Johannes tauft Jesus

Und es begab sich: In jenen Tagen kam Jesus von Nazareth aus Galiläa, und ward von Johannes im Jordan getauft.

Und sofort aus dem Wasser heraufsteigend, sah er den Himmel offen, und den heiligen Geist wie eine Taube herabkommen und auf sich bleiben.

Und eine Stimme erscholl vom Himmel: Du bist mein geliebter Sohn, an dir habe ich mein Wohlgefallen!

Satan versucht Jesus

(Matthäus 4,1-17; Lukas 4,1-15)

Und alsbald trieb ihn der Geist hinaus in die Wüste.

Und er war in der Wüste vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte. Und er ward von dem Satan versucht und war bei den wilden Tieren, und die Engel dienten ihm.

Jesus beginnt sein Wirken in Galiläa

Nachdem aber Johannes überliefert war, kam Jesus nach Galiläa, predigte das Evangelium vom Reiche Gottes,

und sprach: Erfüllet ist die Zeit, und das Reich Gottes hat sich genahet; tuet Buße und dem Evangelium!

Vier Fischer werden als Jünger berufen

(Matthäus 4,18-22; Lukas 5,1-11; Johannes 1,35-42)

Als er nun längs des galiläischen Meeres hinwandelte, sah er Simon und Andreas, dessen Bruder, welche eben ihre Netze in das Meer auswarfen (denn sie waren Fischer).

Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen: Folget mir nach, und ich werde machen, dass ihr Menschenfischer werdet.
18
Und alsogleich verließen sie ihre Netze, und folgten ihm.
19
Als er nun von dort ein wenig weiter gegangen war, sah er den Jakobus, den Sohn des Zebedäus, und Johannes, seinen Bruder, die eben auch im Schiffe ihre Netze zurichteten.

Und alsogleich rief er sie. Und sie ließen ihren Vater Zebedäus mit den Taglöhnern im Schiffe, und folgten ihm.

Jesus treibt einen unreinen Geist aus

(Lukas 4,31-37)

Sie begaben sich nun nach Kapharnaum; und sogleich am Sabbate ging er in die Synagoge, und lehrte sie.

Und sie erstaunten über seine Lehre: den er lehrte sie wie einer, der Macht hat, und nicht wie die Schriftgelehrten.

Und es war in ihrer Synagoge ein Mensch, der einen unreinen Geist hatte. Dieser schrie,

und sprach: Was haben wir mit dir zu schaffen, Jesus von Nazareth? Bist du gekommen, uns zu verderben? Ich weiß, wer du bist: der Heilige Gottes!

Jesus aber bedrohte ihn, und sprach: Verstumme, und fahr aus von dem Menschen!
26
Und indem der unreine Geist ihn hin und her riß, und mit lauter Stimme schrie, fuhr er aus von ihm.
27
Da verwunderten sich alle, so dass sie sich untereinander fragten, und sprachen: Was ist das? Was ist dies für eine neue Lehre? Denn mit Macht gebietet er selbst den unreinen Geistern, und sie gehorchen ihm.

Und der Ruf von ihm verbreitete sich alsbald über die ganze Gegend von Galiläa.

Die Schwiegermutter des Petrus wird geheilt

(Matthäus 8,14-17; Lukas 4,38-41)

Und sogleich verließen sie die Synagoge, und kamen mit Jakobus und Johannes in das Haus des Simon und Andreas.

Die Schwiegermutter des Simon aber lag fieberkrank darnieder; und sogleich redeten sie ihm von ihr.

Da trat er hinzu, nahm sie bei der Hand, und richtete sie auf; und sogleich verließ sie das Fieber, und sie diente ihnen.

Viele Heilungen nach Sabbat-Sonnenuntergang

Als es nun Abend geworden, und die Sonne untergegangen war, brachten sie zu ihm alle Kranken und Besessenen;

und die ganze Stadt war vor der Türe versammelt.

Und er machte viele gesund, die von allerlei Krankheiten geplagt waren, und trieb viele böse Geister aus, und ließ sie nicht reden, weil sie ihn kannten.

Verkündigung in Galiläa

(Lukas 4,42-44)

Bei früher Morgendämmerung aber stand er auf, ging hinaus, und begab sich an einen einsamen Ort, und betete allda.
36
Simon nun folgte ihm nach samt denen, die bei ihm waren.
37
Und da sie ihn fanden, sagten sie zu ihm: Alle suchen dich!
38
Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Lasset uns in die nächstgelegenen Flecken und Städte gehen, damit ich auch dort predige; den dazu bin ich gekommen.
39
Und er predigte in ihren Synagogen, und in ganz Galiläa, und trieb die bösen Geister aus.

Jesus reinigt einen Aussätzigen

(3. Mose 14,1-32; Matthäus 8,1-4; Lukas 5,12-16)

Und es kam ein Aussätziger zu ihm; der bat ihn, fiel auf seine Knie, und sprach zu ihm: Wenn du willst, so kannst du mich reinigen.

Jesus aber erbarmte sich seiner, streckte seine Hand aus, rührte ihn an und sprach zu ihm: Ich will, sei rein!
42
Und als er dies gesprochen hatte, wich der Aussatz alsogleich von ihm, und er ward rein.
43
Und er bedrohte ihn und trieb ihn alsbald von dannen,
44
und sprach zu ihm: Siehe zu, dass du es niemanden sagest; sondern gehe hin, zeige dich dem Hohenpriester, und opfere für deine Reinigung, was Moses befohlen hat, zum Zeugnisse für sie.
45
Er aber ging fort und fing an, die Sache zu verkündigen und auszubreiten, so dass Jesus nun nicht mehr öffentlich in die Stadt gehen konnte, sondern draußen an einsamen Orten blieb; aber sie kamen von allen Seiten zu ihm.
