- Kapitel 1 -

(Genesis 1:1–2; Hebrews 11:1–3)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2
He was with God in the beginning.
3
Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.
4
In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.
5
The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome (a) it.

The Witness of John

There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John.
7
He came as a witness to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe.
8
He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
9
The true Light who gives light to every man was coming into the world.
10
He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him.
11
He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
12
But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—
13
children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God.

The Word Became Flesh

(Psalm 84:1–12)

The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.(b) We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son (c) from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15
John testified concerning Him. He cried out, saying, “This is He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’”
16
From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace.
17
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and (d) is at the Father’s side,(e) has made Him known.

The Mission of John the Baptist

(Isaiah 40:1–5; Matthew 3:1–12; Mark 1:1–8; Luke 3:1–20)

And this was John’s testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”

He did not refuse to confess, but openly declared, “I am not the Christ.”

“Then who are you?” they inquired. “Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”

So they said to him, “Who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23
John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet: “I am a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”(f)

Then the Pharisees who had been sent
25
asked him, “Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26
“I baptize with (g) water,” John replied, “but among you stands One you do not know.
27
He is the One who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”

All this happened at Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Jesus the Lamb of God

(Matthew 3:13–17; Mark 1:9–11; Luke 3:21–22)

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

This is He of whom I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’

I myself did not know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.”
32
Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove and resting on Him.
33
I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is He who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
34
I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.(h)”

The First Disciples

(Matthew 4:18–22; Mark 1:16–20; Luke 5:1–11)

The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.

When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

And when the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

Jesus turned and saw them following. “What do you want?” He asked. They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are You staying?”

“Come and see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and spent that day with Him. It was about the tenth hour.(i)

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John’s testimony and followed Jesus.
41
He first found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated as Christ).

Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated as Peter).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

The next day Jesus decided to set out for Galilee. Finding Philip, He told him, “Follow Me.”

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the same town as Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law, the One the prophets foretold—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

“Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
47
When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, He said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is no deceit.”

“How do You know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
49
“Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Jesus said to him, “Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.”
51
Then He declared, “Truly, truly, I tell you, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”(j)

Das ewige Wort

(1. Mose 1,1-2; Hebräer 11,1-3)

Im Anfange war das Wort, und das Wort war bei Gott, und Gott war das Wort.

Dieses war im Anfange bei Gott.

Alles ist durch dasselbe geworden, und ohne dasselbe ist nichts geworden, was geworden ist.

In ihm war das Leben, und das Leben war das Licht der Menschen.

Und das Licht leuchtet in der Finsternis, aber die Finsternis hat es nicht erfasst.

Das Zeugnis des Johannes: Das wahre Licht

Es war ein Mensch von Gott gesandt, sein Name war Johannes.

Dieser kam zum Zeugnisse, damit er Zeugnis von dem Lichte gäbe, auf dass alle durch ihn glaubten.
8
Er war nicht das Licht, sondern er sollte Zeugnis geben von dem Lichte.
9
Es war das wahre Licht, welches jeden Menschen erleuchtet, der in diese Welt kommt.
10
Er war in der Welt, und die Welt ist durch dasselbe gemacht worden, und die Welt hat ihn nicht erkannt.
11
Er kam in sein Eigentum, und die Seinigen nahmen ihn nicht auf.
12
Wie viele ihn aber aufnahmen, denen gab er Macht, Kinder Gottes zu werden, denen nämlich, die an seinen Namen glauben,
13
welche nicht aus dem Geblüte, auch nicht aus dem Willen des Fleisches, noch aus dem Willen des Mannes, sondern aus Gott geboren sind.

Das Wort wird Fleisch

(Psalm 84,1-12)

Und das Wort ist Fleisch geworden, und hat unter uns gewohnet; und wir haben seine Herrlichkeit gesehen, eine Herrlichkeit als des Eingebornen vom Vater, voll der Gnade und Wahrheit.

Johannes gibt Zeugnis von ihm, und ruft und spricht: Dieser war es, von dem ich gesagt habe: Der nach mir kommen wird, ist vor mir gewesen; denn er war eher als ich.

Und aus seiner Fülle haben wir alle empfangen, Gnade um Gnade.
17
Denn das Gesetz wurde durch Moses gegeben; die Gnade und die Wahrheit ist durch Jesus Christus geworden.
18
Gott hat niemand je gesehen; der eingeborne Sohn, der im Schoße des Vaters ist, er hat es uns kund getan.

Eine Stimme in der Wüste

Und dieses ist das Zeugnis des Johannes, als die Juden von Jerusalem Priester und Leviten an ihn sandten, um ihn zu fragen: Wer bist du?

Und er bekannte, und leugnete nicht; und er bekannte: Ich bin nicht Christus!

Und sie fragten ihn: Was dann? Bist du Elias? Er sprach: Ich bin es nicht. Bist du der Prophet? Er antwortete: Nein.

Sie sprachen also zu ihm: Wer bist du? damit wir denen, die uns gesandt haben, Antwort geben. Was sagst du von dir selbst?

Er sprach: Ich bin die Stimme eines Rufenden in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des Herrn, wie der Prophet Isaias gesprochen hat.

Die Abgesandten aber waren aus den Pharisäern.

Und sie fragten ihn und sprachen zu ihm: Warum taufest du denn, wenn du nicht Christus bist, noch Elias, noch der Prophet?

Johannes antwortete ihnen und sprach: Ich taufe mit Wasser, mitten unter euch steht der, den ihr nicht kennet.
27
Er ist es, der nach mir kommen wird, der vor mir gewesen ist, und dessen Schuhriemen aufzulösen ich nicht würdig bin.
28
Dies geschah zu Bethania, jenseits des Jordans, wo Johannes taufte.

Das Lamm Gottes

Am andern Tage sah Johannes Jesus zu sich kommen, und sprach: Sehet, das Lamm Gottes, sehet, welches hinwegnimmt die Sünde der Welt!

Dieser ist es, von dem ich gesagt habe: Nach mir kommt ein Mann, der mir vorgegangen ist; denn er war eher als ich.

Und ich kannte ihn nicht; aber damit er in Israel offenbar würde, deshalb kam ich, mit Wasser taufend.

Und Johannes gab Zeugnis, und sprach: Ich sah den Geist wie eine Taube vom Himmel herabsteigen, und er weilte über ihm.
33
Und ich kannte ihn nicht; aber der, welcher mich gesandt hat, mit Wasser zu taufen, sprach zu mir: Über wen du den Geist herabsteigen sehen wirst und über ihm weilen, dieser ist es, der mit dem heiligen Geiste tauft.

Und ich habe gesehen, und habe Zeugnis gegeben, dass dieser der Sohn Gottes ist.

Die ersten Jünger

Des andern Tages stand Johannes abermals da und zwei von seinen Jüngern.

Und als er Jesus umherwandeln sah, sprach er: Sehet, das Lamm Gottes!

Und die zwei Jünger hörten ihn das sagen, und folgten Jesus nach.

Jesus aber wandte sich um, und da er sah, dass sie ihm folgten, sprach er zu ihnen: Was suchet ihr? Sie sprachen zu ihm: Rabbi! (das heißt verdolmetscht Meister) wo wohnest du?

Er sprach zu ihnen: Kommet, und sehet es! Da kamen sie, und sahen, wo er sich aufhielt, und blieben diesen Tag bei ihm. Es war um die zehnte Stunde.

Andreas aber, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, war einer von den beiden, welche dies von Johannes gehört hatten, und ihm nachgefolgt waren.

Dieser fand zuerst seinen Bruder Simon, und sprach zu ihm: Wir haben den Messias (das ist verdolmetscht Christus) gefunden.

Und er führte ihn zu Jesus. Jesus aber sah ihn an, und sprach: Du bist Simon, der Sohn des Jonas; du wirst Kephas, das ist Petrus, heißen.

Philippus und Nathanael

Am folgenden Tage wollte er fortgehen nach Galiläa, und fand den Philippus. Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Folge mir nach!

Es war aber Philippus aus Bethsaida, der Stadt des Andreas und Petrus.

Philippus traf den Nathanael und sprach zu ihm: Wir haben den gefunden, von welchem Moses im Gesetze und die Propheten geschrieben haben, Jesus, den Sohn Josephs von Nazareth.

Und Nathanael sprach zu ihm: Kann denn aus Nazareth etwas Gutes kommen? Philippus sprach zu ihm: Komm, und siehe.

Jesus sah den Nathanael zu sich kommen, und sprach von ihm: Siehe, ein wahrer Israelit, in welchem kein Falsch ist!

Nathanael sprach zu ihm: Woher kennest du mich? Jesus antwortete, und sprach zu ihm: Bevor dich Philippus rief, da du unter dem Feigenbaume warest, sah ich dich.

Nathanael antwortete ihm, und sprach: Rabbi, du bist der Sohn Gottes, du bist der König von Israel!

Jesus antwortete, und sprach zu ihm: Weil ich dir gesagt habe, ich sah dich unter dem Feigenbaume, glaubest du: Größeres als dieses wirst du sehen.

Und er sprach zu ihm: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch, ihr werdet den Himmel offen sehen und die Engel Gottes auf- und niedersteigen über dem Menschensohne!
