- Kapitel 35 -

Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and settle there. Build an altar there to the God who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”

So Jacob told his household and all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods that are among you. Purify yourselves and change your garments.

Then let us arise and go to Bethel. I will build an altar there to God, who answered me in my day of distress. He has been with me wherever I have gone.”

So they gave Jacob all their foreign gods and all their earrings, and Jacob buried them under the oak (a) near Shechem.

As they set out, a terror from God fell over the surrounding cities, so that they did not pursue Jacob’s sons.

So Jacob and everyone with him arrived in Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.

There Jacob built an altar, and he called that place El-bethel,(b) because it was there that God had revealed Himself to Jacob as he fled from his brother.

Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak (c) below Bethel. So Jacob named it Allon-bachuth.(d)

After Jacob had returned from Paddan-aram,(e) God appeared to him again and blessed him.

And God said to him, “Though your name is Jacob,(f) you will no longer be called Jacob. Instead, your name will be Israel.(g)” So God named him Israel.

And God told him, “I am God Almighty.(h) Be fruitful and multiply. A nation—even a company of nations—shall come from you, and kings shall descend from you.

The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.”

Then God went up from the place where He had spoken with him.

So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where God had spoken with him—a stone marker—and he poured out a drink offering on it and anointed it with oil.

Jacob called the place where God had spoken with him Bethel.(i)

Benjamin Born, Rachel Dies

Later, they set out from Bethel, and while they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth, and her labor was difficult.

During her severe labor, the midwife said to her, “Do not be afraid, for you are having another son.”

And with her last breath—for she was dying—she named him Ben-oni.(j) But his father called him Benjamin.(k)

So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

Jacob set up a pillar on her grave; it marks Rachel’s tomb to this day.

The Sons of Jacob

(1 Chronicles 2:1–2)

Israel again set out and pitched his tent beyond the Tower of Eder.

While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard about it. Jacob had twelve sons:

The sons of Leah were Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.

The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin.

The sons of Rachel’s maidservant Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali.

And the sons of Leah’s maidservant Zilpah were Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

The Death of Isaac

Jacob returned to his father Isaac at Mamre, near Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.

And Isaac lived 180 years.

Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Jakobs Rückkehr nach Bethel

Und Gott sprach zu Jakob: Mache dich auf, und ziehe hinauf nach Bethel, und verweile daselbst, und baue dem Gott, der dir erschien, als du vor deinem Bruder Esau flohest, einen Altar.

Da rief Jakob sein gesamtes Haus zusammen und sprach: Schaffet die fremden Götter weg, die ihr in eurer Mitte habt, und reiniget euch, und wechselt eure Kleider.

Machet euch auf, wir wollen hinauf nach Bethel ziehen und dort einen Altar dem Gott errichten, der mich in der Zeit meiner Drangsale erhört hat und der mit mir war auf dem Wege, den ich gezogen bin.

Da übergaben sie ihm alle fremden Götter, die sie hatten, und die Ringe, die sie in ihren Ohren trugen; er aber vergrub sie unter der Terebinthe, die bei der Stadt Sichem steht.

Und als sie aufgebrochen waren, fiel ein von Gott gesandter Schrecken auf alle Städte ringsum, so dass sie nicht wagten, die Abziehenden zu verfolgen.

Jakob also kam nach Luza, welches im Lande Chanaan liegt und den Beinamen Bethel hat, er und all das Volk, das bei ihm war.

Und er baute daselbst einen Altar und nannte den Namen jenes Ortes Haus Gottes, den daselbst war ihm Gott erschienen, als er vor seinem Bruder floh.

Zu derselben Zeit starb Debora, die Amme Rebekkas und ward unterhalb Bethel unter einer Eiche begraben; und der Name dieses Ortes ward die Klageeiche genannt.

Gott aber erschien dem Jakob abermals, nachdem dieser aus Mesopotamien in Syrien zurückgekehrt war, und segnete ihn,

und sprach: Du sollst nicht mehr Jakob heißen, sondern Israel soll dein Name sein. Und er nannte ihn Israel

und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gott, der Allmächtige, sei fruchtbar und mehre dich; Völker, ja Familien von Völkern sollen von dir abstammen, und Könige aus deinen Lenden hervorgehen.

Und das Land, welches ich dem Abraham und Isaak gegeben habe, werde ich dir und deiner Nachkommenschaft nach dir geben.

Und er schied von ihm.

Jakob aber richtete einen Stein als Denkmal an dem Orte auf, wo Gott mit ihm geredet hatte, und goss Trankopfer darüber aus, und schüttete Öl darauf.

Und er nannte den Namen dieses Ortes Bethel.

Der Tod Rahels

Sodann zog er fort von da und kam zur Frühlingszeit in den Landstrich, der nach Ephrata führt. Da ward Rachel von Geburtswehen überfallen.

und kam durch eine schwere Geburt in Gefahr. Die Amme sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht; denn auch dieses Mal wirst du einen Sohn haben.

Als aber vor Schmerzen das Leben entfloh, und der Tod schon herannahte, nannte sie den Namen ihres Sohnes Benoni, das ist: Sohn meines Schmerzes; sein Vater aber nannte ihn Benjamin, das ist: Sohn meiner Rechten.

Rachel also starb und ward an dem Wege begraben, der nach Ephrata, das ist Bethlehem, führt.

Und Jakob errichtete einen Denkstein über ihrem Grabe, das ist das Denkmal des Grabes Rachels, das bis auf diesen Tag dort steht.

(1. Chronik 2,1-2)

Von dort brach er auf und schlug sein Lager jenseits des Heerdenturms auf.

Während er in jener Gegend wohnte, ging Ruben hin und schlief bei Bala, der Nebenfrau seines Vaters; es blieb dies dem Vaters keineswegs verborgen. Die Söhne Jakobs aber waren zwölf.

Jakobs zwölf Söhne

Die Söhne Lias: Der Erstgeborene Ruben, und Simeon, Levi, Judas, Issachar, Zabulon.

Die Söhne Rachels: Joseph und Benjamin.

Die Söhne Balas, der Magd Rachels: Dan und Nephthali.

Die Söhne Zelphas, der Magd Lias: Gad und Aser. Dies sind die Söhne Jakobs, die ihm in Mesopotamien in Syrien geboren wurden.

Tod von Isaak

Und Jakob kam zu seinem Vater Isaak nach Mambre, in die Stadt Arbee, das ist Hebron, woselbst Abraham und Isaak als Fremdlinge geweilt hatten.

Und alle Tage Isaaks wurden hundert und achtzig Jahre.

Da starb er, entkräftet vom Alter, und ward zu seinem Volke versammelt, alt und hochbetagt, und seine Söhne, Esau und Jakob, begruben ihn.
